Former Lion Salt Works turned into Heritage Museum

The Lion Salt Works is the last remaining open pan saltworks in Marston, near Northwich, Cheshire, England. It closed as a works in 1986 and is now preserved as a museum.
We flew our aerial drones over the museum before it opened to public looking at the construction and roof details from Marley Eternit. Thanks to West Cheshire Museum for assistance and allowing the capture of this historic site.

The Lion Salt Works welcome
The Lion Salt Works is a restored historic open-pan salt making site, in the village of Marston, close to Northwich. The site lies adjacent to the Trent and Mersey Canal, close to Weaver Hall Museum and Workhouse, and the historic Anderton Boat Lift.

Salt Sunday at the Lion Salt Works 17 May 2009
Salt Sunday is the initiative of the the Bishop of Birkenhead, Rt Rev Keith Sinclair to celebrate the salt and chemical industries in the Weaver Valley and Cheshire. The first event was held at the Lion Salt Works on Sunday, 17 May 2009, in the pouring rain. This is did not dampen the celebration. The service included the church choir of St Michael and All Angels, Middlewich. The reading was given by Tony Woode from St Michael and All Angels, Middlewich and the paryers were by Rev Beth Gardiner of St John the Evangelist, Halton. Thanks to the Henry Rater and George Oliver, the Salt of the Earth Committee saltoftheearth.btik.com and the Friends of the Lion Salt Works friendsoflionsaltworks.btik.com. Brine provided by British Salt. Flour for salt dough crosses from Stretton Water Mill, Cheshire westcheshireandchester.gov.uk.

Views of the Lion Salt Works taken by Andrew Fielding whilst the BBC were filming for the series Restoration. The lay out of the site comprising smithy, manager's office, pump house. pan houses, brine tank and salt store are shown. One salt pan is visible because the roof has been removed after it had become unstable. He site started to be repaired on 27 July 2009 by Cheshire West and Chester Council following the award of a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Comberbach Mummers perform their George and the Dragon play at the Lion Salt Works 2006
The Comberbach Mummers, or Soulcakers, performed their play George and the Dragon at the Lion Salt Works 13 May 2006. This traditional mumming play features a traditional story of good fighting evil and the death of one character who is brought back to life by a Doctor. The play concludes with a rapper dance and the decapitation of a dragon! The script for this play can be found at

Nature's Salt cellars in England are the deep brine wells of Cheshire. L/S of industrial landscape - salt mines.

Lion Salt Works - Enabling Works - Removal of Asbestos Sheeting
The removal of asbestos roofing sheets are part of the enabling works to prepare the site of the last working open pan salt works for restoration as an industrial museum. The work is described in a daily blog at lionsaltworks.blogspot.com . The works are funded by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the owners Cheshire West and Chester council.
