Lion Walk at Lion & Safari Park, Johannesburg, South Africa
The oldest lions I've been able to interact with during my 2 weeks volunteership at the LIon & Safari Park were 12 months old Noah and Leila. Unsurprisingly, the Lion Walk I did with these two beautiful, strong white lions was definitely one of the coolest things I've ever did in my life. It's a very special feeling, being one with these big cats with no fence in between and just the help of a guide and a bucket full of meat!

Feeding the White Lions at Lion & Safari Park - Johannesburg
One of the most exciting jobs during my 2 weeks volunteership at the Lion & Safari Park near Johannesburg, South Africa, was to drive out to the enclosures of our oldest lions, where we took care of them by cleaning their enclosures and feeding them. Among the residents was 18 years old Letsatsi, famous star of the 2010 movie White Lion, which was shot right here on property of the Lion & Safari Park. I'll certainly never forget the earth-shattering sounds of a few growling, hungry, fully-grown white lions as they were expecting their meal!

Lion Pride at Feeding Time - Lion Safari Park South Africa
A video showing interesting dynamics of one of the resident prides of Lion & Safari Park in Broederstroom, South Africa. The dominant male (actual name is Zulu, listed as Shaka in the video), was incredibly aggressive towards his own cubs, stealing their food for himself. The poor little ones were not allowed to eat until the big male had his fill. Amazing to watch this play out right before our eyes!

We have been very lucky to experience some amazing things during our stay here in Monte Casino Johannesburg for the past month. We are here performing Riverdance for the first time in SA + the Lion Park was the first of many great experiences so far.

Q&A :
Are the lions real?
-- Yes
Are the lions drugged or anything else to calm them down?
-- They are definitely not drugged or anything else. They are used to people so that they normally don't attack them. If it was drugged by anything it wouldn’t be walking and running like that.
Why do the people have a wood stick with them?
-- The stick is used as a extension of your arm so that you can push the lion away if he comes too close or you feel uncomfortable. Also the leader use a wood stick to put meat on the end to feed and train the lion.
Does the lion end up in canned hunts?
-- This facility is NOT involved in canned hunting. They do not breed or sell cubs. Normally Tourists are not allowed to interact or walk with lions.

Early life[edit]
Kevin Richardson was born in the Nightingale Clinic on 8 October 1974 in Johannesburg, South Africa. He spent his childhood in the neighbourhood of Orange Grove.[2] His mother, Patricia, worked for Barclays Bank and was also born in South Africa. Richardson's father, who worked for a pharmaceutical company, was born in the United Kingdom and moved to South Africa from Reading, Berkshire. Kevin Richardson is the youngest of four children: he has an older brother and two sisters who are twins.[3] His father died when Richardson was thirteen years old. When he was about sixteen, he met Stan Schmidt and began his career as a self-taught behaviourist.[2]
Career[edit]
Richardson went to college and studied zoology, but quit following two years of repetitive lessons on marine biology instead of mammals. As an adult, Richardson believed that he would never have a career working with animals and that it would remain a hobby of his. He started taking courses in physiology and anatomy in college[4] and started a career in exercise physiology.[5] and became an exercise physiologist. When he was twenty-three, he had the opportunity to work with two six-month-old lion cubs, Tau and Napoleon, at the Lion Park near the outskirts of his home in Johannesburg.[6] He still works with the grown cubs.[4] The facility owner, Rodney Fuhr, started him off with a part-time job at the Lion Park.[6]
Kevin Richardson with spotted hyena
Richardson and his team work with animals for the commercial filming industry and make documentaries to generate income to fund the facility. They also have a volunteer programme which generates income and volunteers who help to run the sanctuary.[4]
Facilities[edit]
Richardson worked in a 1600-acre Lion Park in Broederstroom, a town 35 miles north of his hometown, Johannesburg, in South Africa. While specializing in lions, he also interacted with hyenas and leopards.[5] He spent the first part of his lion career at the Lion Park before moving to the Kingdom of the White Lion. Richardson has a special facility called the Kingdom of the White Lion in Broederstroom.[7][8] The park, which was set up with the help of Rodney Fuhr,[4] is 800 hectares (2,000 acres) and was built for the set of the movie White Lion.[8] Richardson cares for thirty-nine lions at this facility.[7] Currently, the facility is private, but there are plans to open it to the public.[9]
As of 2015, the Kevin Richardson Wildlife Sanctuary relocated to Welgedacht Private Game Reserve near Pretoria.[10]
Lion care[edit]
Kevin Richardson with lions
Richardson has worked with big cats and relies on intuition rather than static rules. He has slept next to, fed, and lived with lions. Along with lions, he has worked with cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas. He prefers lions to any other big cat.[11] His relationship with the animals, however, has not been an instant one. He has known all of the lions he works with since they were cubs.[5] He still continues his bond with Tau and Napoleon, the lion brothers who were his introduction to big cats.[4]
Richardson rejects the traditional notion that lions should be mastered and dominated, preferring to develop a relationship over time, based on love and respect.[12] A lion is not a possession; it's a sentient being, so you must pay attention and develop your bond like with any relationship. [12]
Dangers[edit]
Richardson has been scratched, punctured and bitten but never in a malicious way. Richardson is not dissuaded by these dangers. In an interview, he mentions, Obviously one realizes the danger when working with animals of this calibre, I've weighed the pros and I've weighed the cons, and the pros far outweigh the cons. He warns about following in his footsteps, however. All the pictures of his adventures do not backstreet boy
