Hidden Hikes on Kea Island, Greece | Cinematic Greece Travel Vlog | Kea Day 6
Our Greek Island travels continued with a full day hike and swim on the beautiful, off the beaten path Island of Kea. Stopping by the famous Lion of Kea, a massive and old lion statue right in front of the city, we continued through some beautiful Greek countryside until we eventually reached a beautiful beach ripe for swimming.
We basically spent the whole afternoon chilling out on the beach before heading to a nearby restaurant for fresh fish and seafood, before returning back home to our beautiful Airbnb for one more sunset over Kea Island.
That was basically our last full day on Kea, we spent a few more hours on it the next day before returning to Athens for an extra 24 hours.

Ioulida and Leon-Kea island |VR360 Destinations
Ioulida, or Chora, was built during the archaic times in the island’s mainland. The strategic significance of its location is proved by the ruins of the ancient acropolis and a part of its wall, but also a part of the medieval castle of the Venetians of the 13th century.
The Lion of Ioulida is a “colossal” plastic work of the Early Archaic Times and a landmark of Kea. It is a curved lion-like head on a big single slate that plays the role of the body.

❤️Aubrey was a Speech-Language Pathologist, Donnie was graphic designer, but we both had a dream to travel the world and experience cultures. After three years of being married and dreaming about if something like this great adventure would be possible, we decided to quit the rat race and take on the world. We sold everything we had, quit our jobs, and took off! We don't know how long we will get to do this, and we do have a goal of getting jobs in the UK eventually, but we are going to live it to the fullest while we can!
View of Ioulida or Ioulis, on Kea island in Greece
View of Ioulida (old inland capital of Kea, Greece -- also known as Ioulis) from the road on Tuesday 29 June, 2010.
Ioulida is a lovely, authentically Greek town. No cars are allowed in the town, so you must park outside and walk up. I stopped in for lunch at Rolando's and had a relaxing pasta dish. Located at the top of the main platia, Rolando and his wife Krissa serve specialties from the island and from the island of Corfu, where he comes from.
Ioulida is famous for its lion monument (6th century BC) which is located beyond the town (good little hike). The houses of Ioulida are picturesque with flowers, vines and bright colours everywhere. The end of June sun was very hot, but Ioulida catches a lovely breeze due to its lofty heights.
I was excited at the start of my extended Greek holiday and to have obtained a rental car -- total freedom! Kea is a popular island with local Athenians for weekend breaks. I got there via the port of Lavrio. The boat ride took about an hour.

Destination Kea Cyclades, Greece
Destination Kea is just a breath away from Athens, the island of Kea or Tzia as it is often referred to, is an idyllic weekend resort and at the same time an ideal summer destination in Cyclades, Greece. It is the island of the Cyclades, located closest to Attica. Combining a one of a kind natural landscape, beautiful beaches, thrilling sights and a rich historic tradition, Kea is an enchanting destination that fulfills the expectations even of the most demanding visitor.
Korissia is the main port of the island and welcomes you in its safe harbor. There, you can find many shops, restaurants, cafes, bars and accommodations and a public parking lot. Ioulida is the capital city and a point of reference to the history of the island. Get ready for a walk in a fairytale village full of tightly built traditional white houses with reddish tile roofs, but also more recent multicolored houses, arches with “stegadia”, small taverns, narrow stone-paved alleys with white landings, numerous chapels and picturesque little shops.
With the endless kilometers of its coastline, Kea offers idyllic beaches with impressive crystal-clear waters: organized beaches, beaches with a natural beauty, beaches in the very heart of action, isolated beaches, beaches accessible from the land and the sea as well as hidden beaches that invite the visitor to explore them. Otzias, Gialiskari, Pisses, Koundouros, Spathi, Sikamia, Orkos, Xyla are only some of them. Thanks to the winds and its innumerable little bays, Kea is literally a paradise for sailing, having as an epicenter its enclosed natural harbour of Vourkari or Korissia’s Port. For this reason, many Sailing Races take place here every year and many visitors opt to discover the island by sea, on a sailing-boat. A unique experience not to be missed!
Apart from the coastal attractions of the island, the heart of Kea also conceals real treasures. A unique natural landscape, historic monuments, ancient sights, natural springs, picturesque little churches, myths, thrills and traditions are waiting to be discovered by you on your walk through the island’s rich network of footpaths. This well-preserved network includes 12 ancient routes. Wander around the green creeks in the inland, the most isolated small bays, the most picturesque chapels, the imposing ruins of the tower of Aghia Marina, the Lion which dates back to the 6th Century BC.
One of them will even lead you to the ancient city of Karthea. A small gravel road, water fountains, a rivulet, some gardens and lots of wild-growing herbs create the scenery of this beautiful route. It’s like a journey back in time as reaching Karthea you can admire the ancient temples but also the ancient theater of Karthea that was recently excavated. Walk around the ruins but don’t miss the chance to swim in the refreshing waters of the beach.
Kea is an immense entertainment park for lovers of diving thanks to its underwater wealth. The morphology and the biodiversity of its seabed as well as the role the island played in history, as a location of many shipwrecks, have created a unique scenery for experienced but also amateur divers to explore. Titanic´s twin - the floating hospital ‘Britannic’ and the French ocean liner ‘Burdigala’, and also the paddlewheel steamboat ‘Patris’ and ‘Germal Junkers 52’ - airplane from WWII are waiting underwater to offer unique experiences.
Kea, has its own traditional products coming straight from the land of Kea. Agriculture and stockbreeding are the basic activities of the inhabitants of Kea. Try the delicious “loza”, “tsigara”, local sausages and local cheese, “mavroudi” wine, honey, herbs and spices, nuts and homemade sweets and liqueurs. When leaving the island, along with the memories of your vacation, take literally a bit of its taste with you.
Kea is also a perfect wedding destination and a place where you can plan the event of your dreams. From May to September, the island is full of life while numerous events take place. Sport events, music concerts, local festivals, art exhibitions and traditional feasts will entertain your mind and your soul. Around the year many visitors travel to Kea to experience the island like a local, creating unforgettable memories.

8. POISONOUS BIRDS
Native to the rainforests of New Zealand, the pitohui is the only known genus of poisonous bird in the entire world. The feathers and skin of at least three species of the bird contain a strong poison. Of those species, Hooded and the Variable Pitohuis are considered the deadliest.
7. CARNIVOROUS PARROTS
The cartoonish kea, native to New Zealand, is the only alpine species of parrot in the world, making it uncharacteristically capable of handling heavy winds, cold temperatures, and even snow. It possesses thick, insulating feathers and soars like a raptor as it flies. While the kea’s olive green hue may seem boring or drab at first glance, it becomes much more colorful in flight, displaying its bright red underwing feathers.
6. FRESHWATER SEALS
Meet the Baikal seal, a species of seal endemic to Lake Baikal in Siberia, Russia. The Baikal seal, known locally as the Nerpa, is related to the Caspian seal and the Arctic ringed seal. One major difference sets the Baikal seal apart from others, however: it’s the only true freshwater species of seal in the entire world.
5. FISHING CATS
Even if you’re a cat person, it’s probably very unlikely that you’ve ever had to bathe a cat because for the most part, they are famous for hating water. But there is always an exception to the rule and there is a species of cat that not only tolerates water, but prefers it! The appropriately-named Fishing Cat is native to Southeast Asia and lives in a number of watery environments, including wetlands, the edges of rivers and streams, and mangrove swamps.
4. PLANT-EATING VULTURES
It’s common knowledge that a vulture’s diet typically consists of scavenged animal carcasses, but there is one exception: the palm-nut vulture, which lives and breeds in the forests and savannas of sub-Saharan Africa and feeds primarily on the seeds, nuts, and fruits of various trees, including the akacia, date palm, and kosi palm.
3. HYBRID BIG CAT
LIGERS AND TIGONS AND LITIGONS, OH MY! - wait, what? I’ll explain. If you’ve seen the movie Napoleon Dynamite, or other random videos here on youtube, then you’ve at least heard of the liger - a hybrid between a lion and a tiger. But did you know that it’s a real thing? More specifically, a liger is the offspring of a male lion and a female tiger - parents of the same genus, but different species.
2. NOCTURNAL GULLS
Hailing from Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, and Malpelo Island, Colombia, the swallow-tailed gull is a little-known equatorial marine bird that also happens to be nocturnal. During the day, this bird rests and tends to its young - a responsibility shared between both parents.
1. MARINE IGUANAS
Described by Charles Darwin as “hideous-looking” and “most disgusting, clumsy lizards,” the marine iguana got a really bad rap. But is a very unique animal. Unlike most lizards, who stick to desert-like and tropical environments, the marine iguana is what it sounds like - a water animal that forages under the surf and hangs out along the waves, feasting mostly on the algae and seaweed of submerged rocks.
Origins Explained is the place to be to find all the answers to your questions, from mysterious events and unsolved mysteries to everything there is to know about the world and its amazing animals!
