Kas is a seaside town on the Mediterranean coast in southwestern Turkey. The modern town occupies the site of ancient Antiphellos, with still-visible ruins including a theater. The 4th-century-B.C. Lion Tomb, with 2 carved lion heads, is one of many Lycian rock tombs in the area. The town center has whitewashed houses and buildings covered in bougainvillea. The Lycian Way, a marked trail, passes by the town.
The town of Kaş is on a hill running down to the Turquoise Coast of southwestern Turkey. The district has a typical Mediterranean climate of hot, dry summers and warm, wet winters, which allows the growth of oranges, lemons and bananas. The lowland areas are also planted with cut flowers and a variety of fruits and vegetables, many are grown all year round under glass. The hillsides produce honey, and almonds, while at high altitudes there are extensive pine forests. The weather is drier at high altitudes. Although agriculture is still important, tourism is the main source of income in the district, which has many hotels and guest houses.
The tourist industry is centered on the pleasant town of Kas, but many other coastal towns and villages in the district have plenty of accommodation for visitors including Kalkan and Gelemiş. The district can be reached from both Antalya and Dalaman airports.
Kaş itself is a quiet pleasant town with its blue sea and narrow streets scented with jasmine flowers. There are plenty of little guest houses, quiet cafes serving home cooking, or small bars to relax after a day's scuba diving. Kaş has an annual arts festival, jazz concerts in the Hellenistic theatre and the Kiln Under the Sea arts collective have held underwater ceramics exhibitions here.
Kad is one of the leading spots for scuba diving in Turkey. Its ideal for beginners as well as advanced divers. There are more than 15 dive centers and diving schools, mostly located at the local port. They offer guided diving trips to the 50 dive spots in the vicinity. Diving in Kas offers beautiful array of fish and other sea creatures like octopus and sea turtles. Besides the biological diversity, Kas offers a vast variety of underwater cultural heritage. Among various wreck sites, six artificial wrecks are worth visiting. These wrecks are submerged to create artificial reefs and touristic diving spots. There are two historically important wreck sites, an airplane from World War II and a cargo ship from 1950's sink near the small islands in the extremities of Kas. One last important diving spot is so called Kas Archaeopark Site that is an experimental archaeology project conducted by Underwater Research Society (Sualtı Araştırmaları Derneği-SAD) in 2006. In this scientific project, an interpretative reconstruction of the Uluburun wreck and its cargo is placed underwater.
Outdoor sport activities attract the more adventurous visitors of Kas, especially small group holidays from Europe and independent travelers. To name a few popular adventures:
Sea Kayaking at Kekova
Mountainbiking the backcountry
Trekking the Lycian Way
Canyoning in the Kibris Canyon

Welcome to the South of Turkey. This week we’re in Kaş Turkey! This ended up being one of our favourite towns that we visited while in Turkey and is definitely a gem in Southern Turkey.
Save up to $55 USD our your first AirBNB booking:
To start off the video we head just slightly outside of town where we discover an amazing ancient amphitheater called the Hellenistic theatre, it dates back to about 100 BC and holds about 4000 people. We walk around a bit, take in the views and fly the drone for better views.
Later on we head into the beautiful town, do some shopping and also try the most popular drink in Turkey- Turkish tea as well as Apple Tea.
Afterwards we check out what Kaş offers as far as beaches. First we check out a beach right in town, it’s small but beautiful and also surrounded by lots of hotels and restaurants where you can stay for the day. After this we walk about 20 minutes outside of town to another of the incredible beaches, this one is called Büyükçakıl Plajı or Big Pebble Beach.
To finish off the day, we head back to our apartment rental, do a quick tour of the property and then take in the most amazing sunset!

Kaş Theatre, Kaş, Antalya Province, Mediterranean Region, Turkey, Asia
According to the information board at the entrance, it’s thought the Hellenistic Antiphellos theatre was constructed in the first quarter of the 1st Century BC from local limestone. We’re on Akropolis Hill, here, and 28 rows of seats sat 4,000 spectators. In recent years, parts of the theatre have been restored using the same stone. 26 rows remain and the theatre has been used for public events.

Termessos
Termessos was a Pisidian city built at an altitude of more than 1000 meters at the south-west side of the mountain Solymos (modern day Güllük Dağı) in the Taurus Mountains. It lies 30km to the north-west of Antalya. It was founded on a natural platform on top of Güllük Dağı, soaring to a height of 1,665 metres from among the surrounding travertine mountains of Antalya, which average only 200 metres above sea level.
Termesos is one of the best preserved of the ancient cities of Turkey. It constitutes an unusual synthesis of a large number of rare plants and animal species. Concealed by a multitude of wild plants and bounded by dense pine forests, the site, with its peaceful and untouched appearance, has a more distinct and impressive atmosphere than other ancient cities. Because of its natural and historical riches, the city has been included in a National Park bearing its name.
From the main road, a steep road leads up to the city. From this road one can see the famous Yenice pass, through which wound an ancient road that the Termessians called King Street as well as Hellenistic period fortification walls, cisterns and many other remains.
Quite spectacular is the amphitheatre commanding a view out over the Pamphylian plain. This building is no doubt the most eyecatching in all the Termessos plain. It displays most clearly the features of the Roman theatre, which preserved the Hellenistic period theatre plan.
To the south, west and north of the city, mostly within the city walls, there are large cemeteries containing rock-cut tombs.
Termessos, after a gradual decline, was finally abandoned in the 5th century A.D. Some of the remains found there are the walls, the Hadrian's triumphal arch, the cisterns, the theater, the gymnasium, the agora, the odeon and the heroon. Among the tombs which are scattered far and wide can be seen those of Alcates, Agatemeros and the Lion decorated sarcophagi, which are extraordinary. No excavations have as yet been undertaken at Termessos.

Ioannina: top attractions and places - traditional old town | Greece, land of myths | Yanya
IOANNINA: A TRIP TO THE LAKE AND ITS LEGENDS
Mosques, monasteries and memories reflected in a shimmering lake
Myths surround the city of Ioannina. They hover in the mist that often hangs over its lake and the island in its centre. This time, the myths don’t revolve around gods and heroes, but rather historical personalities. Chief among them is Ali Pasha, the maverick 19th century Turko-Albanian ruler and his court. Intertwined with Ioannina’s history, in this corner of Western Greece, other myths haunt the old, walled district, the Kastro, the citadel of Its Kale, the Byzantine monasteries on the Island and the rich museums.
They are an inseparable part of the city’s life and you will feel their presence even in its green parks, in the little shops on Independence Street, in the groups of lively university students and their hangouts, in the lakeside restaurants, bars and cafes. You’ll catch glimpses of them in the peerless work of Ioannina’s famed silversmiths. And they may even follow you up to the cave at Perama, the theatre at Dodoni and the Zagorohoria mountain villages. Let yourself be captivated by the legends surrounding this beautiful city in Epirus.
What to do in Ioannina
Lake Pamvotis: a 20,000-year-old attraction!
City life revolves around this romantic lake. Get to know it by strolling along its banks, taking a boat ride, fishing, rowing, or having a drink on the lakefront. According to geologists at Cambridge University, it was formed between 20,000 and 26,000 years ago.
Nisi: the Island, a Byzantine realm
It’s only a short boat ride to the Island, but once there, you’ll have to walk. Make sure you visit the Byzantine monasteries (Agios Panteleimon), which all have wonderful frescoes. And then take some time to learn about Ali Pasha, the Lion of Epirus. Regarded by Napoleon as an equal, he was erratic, hosting a great number of foreign dignitaries in his palace, including Lord Byron. Finish your visit on a lighter note with a feast of local specialties, such as grilled trout and eel, at one of the island’s tavernas.
A walk by the lake with the mist for company
In early morning, a curtain of mist invariably hangs over the lake. When it lifts, the figures of cyclists, fishermen and strollers emerge on the lakeshore path, like paintings amidst the scattered sculptures by Epirot artists. You’ll walk in the shadow cast by the Kastro’s two mosques – Aslan and Fetihe.
The Kastro, a melting pot of religions and cultures
For centuries, Jews, Christians and Muslims coexisted in the alleys of this oldest, walled part of Ioannina. And their children played amongst Muslim monuments and synagogues. Today many of their pastel-coloured Macedonian-style houses are still lived in or have become boutique hotels. As you wander these atmospheric streets in the shadow of its sturdy walls, fascinating attractions will catch your eye; the Old Synagogue, the House of Pasha Kalou, the 18th century Soufari Serai, the Turkish baths (hammams) and lots more.

Then go explore the citadel in depth, for here are the Fetihe Mosque (which Ali Pasha built for his seraglio’s worship), the tomb (where his headless corpse was interred), the exceptional Byzantine Museum, the resplendent Treasury, the Arcades and Bohemond’s tower.
Ancient Dodoni: oracle and theatre
A spectacular narrow valley, just 22km south of Ioannina, is the site of Dodoni, one of Greece’s most important archaeological sites. A centre of worship for the father of gods, a renowned oracle. The site’s most impressive attraction is the celebrated theatre from the 3rd century BC. With a capacity of about 18,000 spectators, it is one of the country’s largest.
The Perama Cave, pride of the Balkans
A mere 4km from Ioannina, this cave ranks among the most extraordinary in the whole of the Balkan peninsula. Geologists date its age at 1.5 million years. See if you can discover all 19 different types of stalactites. Noteable spectacles within include the large ‘hall’ of the ‘mythical palaces’, the Statue of Liberty and Santa Claus, and a chamber with breathtaking subterranean pools.
Hidden gems of Ioannina
The fine art of Ioannina’s silversmiths
Handmade jewellery, flatware, trays and ecclesiastical objects all display a standard that comes from generations of experience crafting silver. Silversmiths were among the traditional occupations in Epirus from the 18th century on, with Ateliers at the Tzoumerka villages of Kalarrytes and Syrrako.
The wonderful museums of Ioannina
These include the Byzantine Museum in Its Kale, the Municipal Folk Art Museum, the Archaeological Museum and the Athanasios Vrellis Wax Museum, at Bizani.

Battle of Chaeronea
Philip II of Macedon: White Blocks
Greek Cities: Red Blocks
The Battle of Chaeronea was fought in 338 BC, near the city of Chaeronea in Boeotia, between the forces of Philip II of Macedon and an alliance of Greek city-states (the principle members of which were Athens and Thebes). The battle was the culmination of Philip's campaign in Greece (339--338 BC) and resulted in a decisive victory for the Macedonians.
Many historians, including Hammond and Cawkwell, place Alexander in charge of the Companion cavalry during the battle, perhaps because of Diodorus's use of the word companions. However, there is no mention of cavalry in any ancient account of the battle, nor does there seem to have been space for it to operate against the flank of the Greek army. Plutarch says that Alexander was the first to break the ranks of the Sacred Band of the Thebans, the elite of the Theban infantry, who were stationed on the extreme right of the Greek battle line. However, he also says that the Sacred Band had met the spears of [the Macedonian] phalanx face to face. This, together with the improbability that a head-on cavalry charge against the spear-armed Thebans could have succeeded (because horses will generally shy from such a barrier), has led Gaebel and others to suggest that Alexander must have been commanding a portion of the Macedonian phalanx at Chaeronea.
Diodorus says that more than 1,000 Athenians died in the battle, with another 2,000 taken prisoner, and that the Thebans fared similarly. Plutarch suggests that all 300 of the Sacred Band were killed at the battle, having previously been seen as invincible. In the Roman period, the 'Lion of Chaeronea', an enigmatic monument on the site of the battle, was believed to mark the resting place of the Sacred Band. Modern excavations found the remains of 254 soldiers underneath the monument; it is therefore generally accepted that this was indeed the grave of the Sacred Band, since it is unlikely that literally every member was killed.
