Lions rescued from Iraq and Syria find new home in South Africa
(27 Feb 2018) LEAD IN
Two lions rescued from zoos in war-torn Iraq and Syria have arrived at a big cat sanctuary in South Africa.
Before their journey they spent time recuperating from physical and psychological trauma in an animal sanctuary in Jordan.
STORY-LINE
Blinking and looking slightly bewildered, Simba the lion steps into his new home at Lionsrock Big Cat Sanctuary in South Africa for first time.
He was rescued from Mosul Zoo in Iraq by international animal welfare group Four Paws last year and has been recuperating at a sanctuary in Jordan ever since.
Logistics of rescuing in a war zone are obviously very difficult, because you don't have the usual situation with normal authorities and everything running smoothly, so it took quite some effort to get the animals out of Iraq and Syria. Obviously for the animals it is also very stressful, but finally they managed to get them out, says Hildegard Pirker, Head of Animal Welfare at Lionsrock Big Cat Sanctuary
Most of the 40 other animals at the Mosul zoo died of starvation or were killed in bombings while some escaped from their enclosures, according to Four Paws. The groups' members reached the location a year ago and evacuated the only two animals they found, a bear and the lion who is believed to be around 4 years old.
It's a sanctuary where animals can at least live out the rest of their lives in peace. They have been through to much in so many different and difficult circumstances, they have been rescued by Four Paws from around the world, from zoos, from circuses, from terrible conditions and now today the most recent rescue from terrible war torn conditions, says Fiona Miles, Director, Four Paws South Africa
Stepping out next is Simba's partner in this adventure, 2 year old Saeed, a lion who the same charity rescued from Magic World amusement park in Aleppo in July, along with 12 other animals.
Both lions reached Jordan after staying for two weeks in Turkey, whose government assisted with the evacuation.
Logistics of rescuing in a war zone are obviously very difficult, because you don't have the usual situation with normal authorities and everything running smoothly, so it took some effort to get the animals out of Iraq and Syria, says Hildegard Pirker, Head of Animal Welfare at Lionsrock Big Cat Sanctuary.
The male lions were transported in metal crates on a Qatar Airways flight after leaving al-Ma'wa shelter in Jordan on Sunday (25th February 2018). They were loaded onto vehicles for a drive of several hours to their new home at the Lionsrock facility near the town of Bethlehem. The lions emerged into separate grassy enclosures, and other lions behind nearby fences let out deep-throated growls and moans.
Born in captivity, the lions have never been on the continent. They were emaciated and dehydrated after the international animal welfare group Four Paws rescued them. The cities of Mosul and Aleppo have experienced some of the worst fighting that has hit both countries in recent years, killing large numbers of people and leaving neighbourhoods in ruins.
Both lions were traumatised when they arrived at the Al-Ma'wa Animal Sanctuary in Jordan.
They were completely dehydrated, explains Diana Bernas, al-Ma'wa shelter head animal keeper.
Neither one of them came with open wounds which is really nice because we did receive other animals with open wounds from Syria. But it was just completely dehydrated and very, very skinny, where you could see all of their bones.
Since then, the lions have received medical care, including vasectomies and dental work, and have gained weight on a steady diet that included lamb meat treats.
The lions can expect similar love and care at Lionsrock to that which they have been receiving in Jordan.

Old tiger saved from Gaza arrives in South Africa
(30 Aug 2016) LEAD IN:
A tiger saved from starvation in Gaza Zoo has moved into his new home at a cat sanctuary in South Africa.
The tiger called Laziz survived three wars in Gaza, including one in 2014 when the zoo was cut off for over a fortnight during Israeli bombing raids.
STORY-LINE:
This is Laziz, a nine year old Bengal tiger taking in the sights and sounds of his new home.
His name means sweet or tasty, but perhaps he should be called 'lucky'.
The charity Four Paws rescued him along with a number of other animals at the derelict Khan Younis Zoo in Gaza.
Laziz arrived here at Johannesburg's international airport after four days in a crate being transported out of Gaza to South Africa.
Ioana Dungler the charity's director of wildlife was in Gaza to supervise the tiger's departure and she's here to ensure he settles happily into his new home which is Lionsrock, a sanctuary for big cats like Laziz.
Dungler says: Laziz was the last tiger of Gaza, so he was very precious also for the Gaza authorities and communities, so he was kind of a symbol. So it was really urgent to act as fast as possible.
According to Dungler, nine year old Laziz suffered abuse at the hands of caretakers in Gaza and was severely malnourished.
She says: The owners (of Khan Younis Zoo in Gaza) were not able to feed the animals anymore. They literally let them die, so they really died by starvation. Initially there were more than fifty animals and they died, died, died until the last ones, fifteen were left.
Laziz was also traumatised at the zoo, explains Dungler: What they did was they were using other metal sticks to to scare him with the metal bars…so he is terrified about everything that is metal and that is loud and so…all the last days for him of course were not very comfortable, but at least he was let in peace. Nobody was shouting at him, nobody was throwing things to him. I mean the kids are having fun throwing stones at the animals.
Although he's a Bengal tiger, it is fitting that Laziz should be here in South Africa.
Next month (September 24) the country will host the annual conference of CITES - the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
Tigers are one of the endangered species that will be discussed at the conference.
Before Laziz is taken to the sanctuary, he's checked by veterinarians to check he has the correct paperwork.
Because tigers are on the endangered list, their transportation is restricted and the vets needed to ensure his importation to South Africa wasn't contravening the CITES convention.
The veterinarian at Lionsrock is Marina Strydom.
She's pleased with Laziz's state of health.
Strydom says His condition is good, he has got a little scratch besides his one eye, but that is just due to the crate. He is very calm, he has been in the crate since Monday so it is long trip for him this far.
It will take some time for Laziz to feel at home here.
He is afraid of metal sounds and has had to stay in his metal cage during transportation.
Dungler explains this is a result of his experience at the zoo.
She says: What they did, was they were using other metal sticks to scare him with the metal bars, so he is terrified about everything that is metal and that is loud and so, all the last days for him of course were not very comfortable, but at least he was left in peace. Nobody was shouting at him, nobody was throwing things to him. I mean the kids are having fun throwing stones at the animals.
Lionsrock is near Bethlehem in the Free State Province, which is about 300 kilometres west of Johannesburg.
Laziz's took a while before venturing out into his new world which is several hectares in size with tree trunks, rocks and makeshift structures for him to climb.

MORE INFO ABOUT THE PROJECT:
OUR CROWDFUNDING CAMPAIGN:
Schluss damit!
please support us! we will produce an int. documtary about the brutal lion industry in South Africa and the people running the wildlife-sanctuary LIONSROCK, home for 108 big cats. We want to increase political pressure on this subject. more than 170 breeding farms breed lions to sell them to canned-hunting farms. People can buy these animals via the internet - simply to shoot them! let us try to stop this crude industry!
