STORYLINE:
Tourists queued at the airport in Belize City on Monday, in a bid to escape the arrival of Hurricane Felix, which was expected to slam into the small Caribbean nation on Wednesday.
We were to advised to leave. We were down in Placencia which is further south and the resort was closing up, an American tourist at the airport told AP Television.
Meanwhile, residents started boarding up windows and queuing up for fuel, as the skies around the city grew increasingly cloudy and winds kicked up.
Liquor sales were banned, and stores were running out of plywood and other supplies.
In the southern town of Punto Gorda, residents made final preparations to secure homes and stock-up with gas supplies before the storm's arrival.
Oh yes work is very, very busy. Very, very busy today. I hope maybe tomorrow too, Santiago Pop, who works at a hardware store in the town, told AP Television.
If the hurricane hits here the roads might be old and we won't have any gas available. So I'm making sure I have enough gas after the hurricane hits, another man, Henry Wedderburn said.
Meanwhile, medical volunteers at Punta Gorda's medical clinic had been advised to leave the area before Felix hit.
They told us that because the strength of the hurricane because it's hitting so far south, they want us to leave the country, and then come back, one volunteer, Jeff Fox said.
We've evacuated basically our whole facility, Fox added.
Felix's top winds weakened slightly to 215 kilometres per hour (135 miles per hour) as it headed west on Monday, but forecasters warned that it could strengthen again before landfall along the Miskito Coast, a region straddling the Honduras-Nicaragua border, expected early on Tuesday.
From there, it was projected to rake northern Honduras, hit southern Belize on Wednesday and then cut across northern Guatemala and southern Mexico, well south of Texas.
Dean damaged crops everywhere it passed, including an estimated 100 (m) million US dollars in Belize alone.
