In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Panama.
More information about the video content bellow:
1. The US Dollar is the official currency and is used for bills but the national currency is called Balboa. In practice Panama is dollarized: US dollars are legal tender and used for all paper currency, while Panama has its own coinage.
2. The Panama Canal is one of the most ambitious engineering projects ever undertaken. It facilitates passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific for more than 14,000 ships every year. This shortcut greatly reduced the time for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, enabling them to avoid the hazardous route around the southernmost tip of South America.
3. The Panama Canal Railroad is the most expensive rail network ever built: Costing more than $8 million and taking five years to complete (1850-1855), the Panama Railroad is the most expensive rail construction project in the world. An estimated 12,000 workers died during the building of the railroad.
4. When Central America revolted against Spain in 1821, Panama joined the already independent country of Colombia. It would then spend the next 82 years struggling to gain its independence from Colombia. When Colombia rejected the United States’ Canal proposal in 1903, Panama finally broke free and declared its independence, which the U. S. immediately recognized in order to back the new government.
5. In the 1980’s general Manuel Noriega was in control of Panama. Noriega replaced presidents at his will, but when president Eric Delvalle tried to fire Noriega, the general forced the national assembly to replace him. Finally the assembly named Noriega “maximum leader” in December of 1989 and declared Panama and the United States to be at war. The U. S. had seized control of Panama City and attempted to capture Noriega.
6. In 1534, Charles V, the Holy Roman emperor, ordered a survey to determine if a canal could be built, but the surveyors decided that such a construction was impossible. In 1881, the French were the first to try, but after 20 thousand deaths, their company went bankrupt. America’s efforts fared little better; between 1904 and 1913 some 5,600 workers died due to disease or accidents.
7. The location of Panama City, the capital of the country, is not the original one. In January of 1671, privateer Henry Morgan, along with a band of 1,400 men, attacked, looted and burned the city.It was formally reestablished two years later in 1673, in a peninsula located 8 km from the original settlement.

Panama's Beauty #16 Isla Grande, So you rented a car - now what?
Looking back 14y at one side-trip we did back then. We'll be doing many more of this kind of chatty video with useful tips to help you plan a super vacation in Panama, So do LIKE this video + SUBSCRIBE to get new ones, COMING SOON!
(1) No car? See:
(2) Travel time by car from Panama city depends on time of day. Leave after 9am then it will take about 1.5 hours, come back before 4pm or after 7pm to avoid rush hour. It's well worth the few $'s to sleep over at least 1 night (maybe even 2) to not be stressed.
(3) We spent the day on Playa Isla Grande but here's a nice overview of the island:
(4) The boat ride from the mainland is short (10min) and cheap ($5) as is the parking to leave your car there till you return ($6).
(5) On the map in (3) above, several hotels, B&B's and restaurants are shown - but there are more than that, so do some internet searches.
****BACK STORY***
After posting this video on a FB page, I was asked: You went from Living in Africa (South Africa) to Canada - that's easy to accept, but why leave Canada for Panama? Comment: We've often got that rather incredulous reaction ... as if Canada is so awesome and Panama isn't. Well things are not always what they appear to be! Here's my Response: We left SA for Canada in 1978/79 and lived there for 28 years - it's nice enough, friendly people - but COLD and we (like 8 million other Snow-birds) were tired of hibernating for 8m a year, plus there's no color or flowers in those 8m! It's very expensive (Homes, gasoline, cars/trucks) you can get $1Can for only US 75c. It's a socialist country (nanny-state) in which people with free-spirits don't thrive! Many companies have tried - all have failed! Blackberry, Massey-Ferguson, Nortel, Novatel - the list goes on! To succeed, people (like Elon Musk who lived in Canada for many years but accomplished little there) leave Canada for the USA. Then they accomplish impressive things. Canada is a land of mediocrity - don't dare trying to rise above the crowd there - know your place! There's a few ultra-rich oligarchs, and then there's everybody else. In the USA 20% are millionaires, in Canada less than 1% - a Bernie-Sanders country. To keep the natives from getting restless, they were the 1st country to legalize Pot. Public schools are NOT good, so we home-schooled our sons. Generally their daughters are taught to out-compete their sons, which is not quite ideal (Equal treatment would be better) and it shows in their marriage and divorce statistics. Once a very Godly country - now they're mostly not. Real estate is now so expensive that younger folks are locked-out of the market and have to rent and are not having children because they feel they cannot afford them. Their birth-rate is so low, they have to resort to massive immigration to sustain economic growth, which is tepid at best, and it all changes the very fabric of their nation. Debt levels are high and Taxes too! Government services are over-promised and even for their so-called enviable universal medical-care system, mediocrity rules the day! By contrast, in Panama Jon Hopkins medical center specialists did, for our son, what they said, in Canada, was impossible - got the use of his arms and hands back. He's now a world-famous Scifi author (Cost $8,000US) In Panama, my wife, symptomatic at age 62, had breast MRI's (2 - 1 for diagnosis, the 2nd for accurate wire guided surgery) no biopsy, for Stage-2 BC, a 2.2cm tumor pathology typed and estimated was there since her early 40's - so, unnoticed for almost a decade in Canada! She's now just fine - but no thanks to them! (Cost $7,000US - no waiting, everything done in 1 week) Meanwhile in Canada her sister, 4y younger, went through their free universal medical care with no MRI's allowed (they can't afford to let all women have them) only mammograms, Biopsies and old (out of date) care. She's now stage-4, terminal. My wife founded/runs the World's #1 Low-Carb/Keto FB team (1.9 million likes) from within the jungles of Panama (true story) and has been on top of that world 7y straight. Famous in the USA, she's hardly known in Canada. That said, Canadians are friendly, generous! The country manages to survive despite the best attempts of it's politicians to louse it up. We like the Canadian passport, arguably one of the best in the world! I'd like a refund on the $million+ I paid to them in taxes over 28y, while receiving very little in return! It was handed out to many people who didn't want to work (Welfare, UIC, Maternity leave + other social programs) so they would vote for the liberals (Socialists) there. We only had 2 votes????our taxes were used to buy 100+ votes instead, so why worry about us?????

I tried to backflip in Panama! | Central America Travel
Today we are starting our trip to Central America, where our first stop is Panama City. We visit the Panama Canal, dance by the Pacific Ocean and explore the city. After that we take a bus to beautiful Boquete, where we decide to take a spontaneous hike to the tallest mountain of Panama Volcan Baru. We were hiking it all through the night and at the top it was absolutely freezing. The spectacular sunrise made up for it though. Our last stop in Panama is Bocas del Toro. A wonderful group of islands, where we get to relax, enjoy the beaches and discover all of what the Caribbean Sea has to offer. We even attempt a backflip.
Our following travels will lead us to every other country in Central America (Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Belize) and there's a lot more adventure to come.

How Does the Panama Canal Work?
The Panama Canal is approximately 80 kilometers long between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The Canal uses a system of locks that function as water lifts, raising the ships from sea level (the Pacific or the Atlantic) to the level of Gatun Lake (26 meters above sea level); ships then sail the channel through the Continental Divide.

We took the Panama Express train and the ride is about 1 hour. When we arrived in Colon , we took the bus and we headed to the Gatun Locks . It is the largest canal locks and we had access to a platform to observe the passage of boats . We were lucky because we were able to observe the passage of a ship through the locks .
We then head to the town of Portobelo , a colonial city to make the tour of the fort and a church where Christ is black.
We stop at a small restaurant for lunch. It was really excellent. We took the meal shrimp served on rice with coconut milk . The dessert was served with pineapple ice cream .
Subsequently, we made a small dip in the Caribbean Sea ... Few people have the chance to swim in the same day in the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea . Mission accomplished for both of us !
