Indian River Drive Jensen Beach Florida to Fort Pierce
One of my favorite things to do as a Treasure Coast resident is to take a leisurely drive along the Indian River. I can literally feel the stress leave my body and I quickly forget about my “to do” list as I travel long this beautiful stretch of water. The pace is slow, steady and there are no stop lights on Indian River Drive.
Indian River Drive is a two-lane road that runs from Stuart Florida all the way into Fort Pierce Florida. And what I like most about this stretch of road is that it makes you feel like you have stepped back in time. There are no big commercial buildings or high rises. Nothing but palm trees, sand and beautiful homes.
Living along the drive provides for a laid-back tropical feel and many of the home sites do have water footage directly in front of the property. Some waterfront homes have long finger piers where you could dock a boat, or just throw a fishing line. As you drive along the road you will see many home owners have small private beaches sprinkled with beach chairs, umbrellas and tiki huts.
Many people looking for waterfront homes with land like this area of Martin and St Lucie County. Most lots allow for enough space to store a boat, RV or numerous automobiles. I would venture to say at least half of the properties long the drive has at least an acre of land, however, many property owners have subdivided their lots for profit.
You will find as you drive along this road there are both very large estates and some very modest properties as well. I will also mention that there is no home owner’s association, so property owners have the freedom to do as they wish on their homesites. And while no HOA provides for some nice advantages, you must also take the good with the bad. No one can force your neighbor to power wash his driveway or prune his palm trees. So, as you drive along this road you will see it can be the wild west.
I find the homes along the river to be refreshing with a wide variety of choices letting people live in a less restricted atmosphere. If you are looking for something off the beat-n-path with the ability to let your hair down this is certainly a place to consider.
Feel free to browse homes for sale in both Martin and St Lucie county situated along the Indian River by visiting my website or by visiting my blog at and click the search tab.

Aaron ADAMS 1/24/18 Linking Fish, Habitats, and Conservation
About the Lecture
The scales at which recreational fisheries are managed do not match the ecology of the species that comprise the fisheries. Moreover, most fisheries management plans do not include information about habitat requirements for target species. These disconnects poses challenges to effective fisheries conservation. This presentation will use examples from recent research to highlight these disconnects. For example, management of the recreational fishery for snook (Centropomus undecimalis) in Florida, focus on stock assessments, discard mortality estimates, and catch and release education. Missing are management actions that consider the habitat mosaic required for snook ontogenetic connectivity. Additional focal species include bonefish (Albula vulpes), tarpon (Megalops atlanticus), and permit (Trachinotus falcatus). Incorporating the ecological-scale factors into conservation strategies for coastal recreational fisheries is essential to ensuring sustainable fisheries, especially given the increasingly critical degradation and loss of coastal habitats.
About the Speaker
Dr. Aaron Adams is a Senior Scientist at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and the Director of Science and Conservation for Bonefish & Tarpon Trust. He received a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s College in Maryland, a Master’s degree from the College of William and Mary, and a Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts Boston, and holds a Coast Guard Captain’s License. He has lived, conducted research, and fished on both coasts of the US and throughout the Caribbean. His scientific focus is on conducting applied research with conservation implications, with a particular interest in fish habitat ecology. In addition, he is also an avid angler, and has authored three books, contributed to five books, and written numerous magazine articles that translate fish science into layman’s terms.
