Lisbon's mosaics at risk as young snub dying trade
The Portuguese capital is well known for its elaborate cobbled streets but the skill of mosaic building is under threat as younger generations show little interest in this dying art. Duration: 01:38.
Lisbon Mosaic Studio: Break a plate, create and... decorate!
When NewsShow.tv came across the amazing Lisbon Mosaic Studio, we knew we had to bring the team along to join in the fun.
We spent a few relaxing hours getting to know owner Eileen McDonough in her amazing studio in the heart of Lisbon...
And quickly entered a ‘Zen’ State of Mind as we became engrossed in this ancient art form.
Our conclusion?
It’s fair to say pretty much anyone of any age can enjoy this highly rewarding experience - even if they have never made mosaics before!
In fact, owner Eileen often receives entire families who come to make their own unique creations - so they can take them home as gifts or beautiful decorations.

Adeyto & Huawei P20 PRO @ Lisbon National AZULEJOS Museum of Ceramic Tiles PORTUGAL
The amazing world of baked ceramic tiles forming landscapes on Portuguese walls, love it so much, i even bought a dress to match it!!
The museum collection features decorative ceramic tiles or azulejos from the second half of the 15th century to the present day. Besides tiles, it includes ceramics, porcelain and faience from the 19th to the 20th century. Its permanent exhibition starts with a display of the materials and techniques used for manufacturing tiles. The National Tile Museum was established in 1965 and became a National Museum in 1980. It is located in the former Convent of Madre Deus, founded by Queen D. Leonor in 1509. The Museum went through different building campaigns that involved transformations such as in its 16th-century mannerist cloister; the church which is decorated with remarkable sets of paintings and tiles; the sacristy featuring a Brazilian wood display cabinet and carved wood frames with paintings; the high choir with rich carved gilt wood embellishments; the Chapel of Saint Anthony with an 18th-century Baroque decoration and a significant number of canvases by the painter André Gonçalves.

It is among the most distinctive features of Lisbon: The use of tile on buildings, in churches, and even for sidewalks.

Only penned the original tile technique has been frequently applied in a bowl. The culture of Portugal is represented in two ways. The Fado music, art, the feed azulenyl. Oh it is one of the works of art that julre. Since the epidemic began around the 14th century AZULEJO. Until now they have to draw on the colored tiles instead of canvas. If general homes in Portugal and restaurants can usually access AZULEJO beautifully embroidered up from the street.

A Weekend in Lisbon
simplexitytravel.co.uk
It’s not often I do a city tour and find myself greeted with smiles and waves by locals, hooted by passing cars and snapped by endless tourist smartphones.
But that’s what happens when you abandon the usual jaunts on foot or by bus to phut phut phut around the heart of Lisbon in vintage motorbikes and sidecars.
In the past I’ve taken the rickety No 28 tram up and down its seven hills and tramped its azulejos-tiled streets in search of gilded baroque churches. But this wasn’t going to cut it with the teenager in tow, especially in the stifling summer heat. Happily, the trips run by João Soares and his team of drivers feel spookily like a theme-park ride and are a brilliant way to kick-start a weekend in this curiously underrated city.
Kitted out with helmets and buckled into our sidecars, each of Second World War era Russian military design, we whizz down the Avenida de Liberdade, then bump over the cobbles of Bairro Alto — packed with drinkers and clubbers at night but completely empty at 10am apart from the odd abandoned beer glass — and come to a halt in trendy Chiado, with its smart shops, black-and-white mosaic cobblestones and al fresco dining.

Azulejo class in Portugal
Beginning of course in Azulejo (hand painted tile) at Cencal.
Lisbon: City of Tile, 2018
Shot May 9 - 11, 2018.
Portugal on Azulejo tiles - October 2017
“To draw you must close your eyes and sing.”
Pablo Picasso
Unforgettable and unique adventure in Portuga. Participants of this project spent creative, inspiring days on Portugal’s Sunny Coast, in picturesque Estoril, 25 kms west of Lisbon. Great dinner conversations, exchanging experiences and inspirations, a whole day trip along the cost, which took us to the westernmost point of mainland Europe at Cabo da Roca; beautiful village of Azenhas do Mar and fairytale Sintra. The group also spent the afternoon in Lisbon – ‘the city of light’ with guided tour.
The main therapeutic attraction was the workshop of Azulejo-tile painting, which was held in a traditional Portuguese home. With guidance from the experienced Azulejo-painting teacher, using traditional colour and designs, our participants painted beautiful Azulejos, which become their personal and very original souvenirs from this journey and a very special and memorable decoration for their homes.
Next workshop in 2018!
