Lisbon Aquarium - Lisbon Oceanarium
Biggest Aquarium Lisbon Portugal,
The Lisbon Oceanarium is an oceanarium in Lisbon, Portugal. It is located in the Parque das Nações district of Lisbon and is highly recommended and is regarded as one of the world's best Aquariums, which was the exhibition grounds for the Expo '98. It is the largest indoor aquarium in Europe.
Lisbon's Oceanarium is divided in to four large tanks that represent the four major oceananic ecosystems that are found throughout the world, with a massive central tank. The ecological systems are North Atlantic rocky coast, the Tropical Indian coral reefs, the Temperate Pacific kelp forests and the Antarctic coastal line.
The central tank is separated from the four ecological tanks by a glass barrier to give the impression of one massive tank. The main exhibit in Lisbon's Oceanarium is the 1,000-square-metres tank and the four 49-square-metre outer tanks. The central tank is 7 metres deep and allows pelagic swimmers to swim above the bottom dwellers, and providing the illusion of the open ocean.
The water in the centre tank of Lisbon's Aquarium is kept at a temperature that will allow both temperate and tropical fish to live. About 100 species from around the world are kept in the central tank and include: sharks, rays, chimaeras, various species of tuna, barracudas, groupers and moray eels and one of the main attractions is a large Sunfish.

Oceanarium in Lisbon, what to expect?
We went to see the oceanarium with great expectations since it was Lukas first time and we weren't disappointed :)
The Lisbon Oceanarium has a large collection of marine species — penguins, seagulls and other birds; sea otters (mammals); sharks, rays, chimaera, seahorses and other bony fish; crustaceans; starfish, sea urchins and other echinoderms; sea anemones, corals and other Cnidaria; octopuses, cuttlefish, sea snails and other molluscs; amphibians; jellyfish; marine plants and terrestrial plants and other marine organisms totalling about 16,000 individuals of 450 species.
The main exhibit is a 1,000 m2 (11,000 sq ft), 5,000 m3 (180,000 cu ft) tank with four large 49 m2 (530 sq ft) acrylic windows on its sides, and smaller focus windows strategically located around it to make sure it is a constant component throughout the exhibit space. It is 7 m (23 ft) deep, which allows pelagic swimmers to swim above the bottom dwellers, and provides the illusion of the open ocean. About 100 species from around the world are kept in this tank,[3] including sharks, rays, barracudas, groupers, and moray eels. One of the main attractions is a large sunfish.
Four tanks around the large central tank house four different habitats with their native flora and fauna: the North Atlantic rocky coast, the Antarctic coastal line, the Temperate Pacific kelp forests, and the Tropical Indian coral reefs. These tanks are separated from the central tank only by large sheets of acrylic to provide the illusion of a single large tank. Throughout the first floor there are an additional 25 thematic aquariums with each of the habitats' own characteristics.

LISBON: Parque das Nações - newest district (5/5) Portugal HD
Parque das Nações (English: Park of the Nations) is the newest district in Lisbon/Lisboa, having emerged from an urban renewal programme leading to the World Exhibition of Lisbon 1998, also known as Expo'98.
The Gare do Oriente is one of the main transport hubs of Lisbon for trains, buses, taxis and the metro. Its glass and steel columns are inspired by Gothic architecture, lending the whole structure a visual fascination (especially in sunlight or when illuminated at night).
The area is pedestrian-friendly with new buildings, restaurants, gardens, the Casino Lisbon, the Vasco da Gama Shopping Center, the FIL building (International Exhibition and Fair), the Camões Theatre, cable car, as well as the Oceanário de Lisboa (Lisbon Oceanarium), the second largest in the world.
To tour the area, visitors can jump on a toy train that passes by the main attractions every twenty minutes, or ride the cable car that runs the full length of the site, parallel to the river, while giving commanding views along the way.
The Marina Parque das Nações features 600 berths and modern infrastructures, a river pier for cruises or historical vessels and an exclusive pontoon prepared to receive nautical and on land events.

In the distance, the Vasco da Gama Bridge over the river Tagus (Tejo) can be seen. It is the longest bridge in Europe (including viaducts), with a total length of 12.3 kilometres (7.6 mi), including 0.8 kilometres (0.50 mi) for the main bridge and 11.5 kilometres (7.1 mi) in viaducts. It was built to alleviate the congestion on Lisbon's 25 de Abril Bridge, and eliminate the need for traffic between the country's northern and southern regions to pass through the capital city.
The bridge was opened to traffic on 29 March 1998, just in time for Expo 98, the World's Fair that celebrated the 500th anniversary of the discovery by Vasco da Gama of the sea route from Europe to India.

Lisbon Oceanarium in Lisbon, Portugal
The Lisbon Oceanarium is an oceanarium in Lisbon, Portugal. It is located in the Parque das Nações, which was the exhibition grounds for the Expo '98. It is the largest indoor aquarium in Europe.
The Lisbon Oceanarium’s conceptual design, architecture, and exhibit design was led by Peter Chermayeff of Peter Chermayeff LLC while at Cambridge Seven Associates. It is said to resemble an aircraft carrier, and is built on a pier in an artificial lagoon. Chermayeff is also the designer of the Osaka Oceanarium, one of the world's largest aquariums, and many other aquariums around the world.
The Lisbon Oceanarium has a large collection of marine species — penguins, seagulls and other birds; sea otters (mammals); sharks, rays, chimaeras, seahorses and other bony fish; crustaceans; starfish, sea urchins and other echinoderms; sea anemones, corals and other cnidaria; octopuses, cuttlefish, sea snails and other mollusks; amphibians; jellyfish; marine plants and terrestrial plants and other marine organisms totaling about 16,000 individuals of 450 species.

Throughout the first floor there are an additional 25 thematic aquariums with each of the habitats' own characteristics.
The Lisbon Oceanarium is one of the few aquariums in the world to house a sunfish, because of their unique and demanding requirements for care. Other interesting species include two large spider crabs and two sea otters named Eusébio after the soccer player and Amália, named after the fado singer Amália Rodrigues.

Lisbon Oceanarium (Oceanário de Lisboa) in Portugal
Lisbon's Oceanarium is one of the world's largest aquariums and the largest indoor aquarium in Europe. The Lisbon Oceanarium (Portuguese: Oceanário de Lisboa) is an oceanarium in Lisbon, Portugal and located in the Parque das Nações, which was the exhibition grounds for the Expo '98. It rises from the river and is reached by a footbridge. It is designed by American architect Peter Chermeyeff.
It is a deep-sea diving experience without any of the risks, with about 25,000 fish, seabirds, and mammals in an enormous central tank that is the size of four Olympic-sized swimming pools. Visitors can look into it from different levels for close-ups of the various creatures, including different species of sharks.
But it's the design rather than the size that makes it outstanding. It is the first aquarium ever to incorporate world ocean habitats within a single environment, with impressive recreations of various ocean ecosystems -- the Antarctic tank containing penguins, and the Pacific tank with otters playing in rock pools. They are all separated from the main tank by invisible acrylic walls, giving the impression that all the creatures are swimming in the same space. There are also high-tech multilingual interactive displays explaining the development of ocean life.
