????????Lismore Castle Garden - Dan the Arborist pt 2/2 | The trees & Leaving Lismore | Ireland Vlog #10
In the second part of the Botanical Gardens, we explore the trees and meadows of the castle. It was a very nice and pleasant trip and for only 8€ entry fee an absolute bargain, eh? It was really late after i visited the castle and i had another 3h to ride to my airbnb. So i left Lismore with a good thought and i put a additional something (as usual) in the end of the video.
Slainte!

Well, yes! Finally i could enter the castle area and i started with the botanical gardens. I expected ancient trees´n plants and treasures to find, but it was actually a bit different from what i had in my mind. Like usual. But nevertheless beautiful i´d say.

Lismore Castle
Lismore Castle, Co. Waterford, the gardens are set in severn acres within the 17th century outer defensive walls and have spectacular views of the castle and the surrounding countryside. The herbaceous border aligned on the Cathedral's spire gives an impressive show of colour through the summer months. Several pieces of contemporary scultputure have been installed in the garden; full details of these are available in the garden brochure which is available at the entrance kiosk. Throughout the open season there is always planety of interest in this fascinating and romantic garden. There is a fine selection of specimen magnolias, camellias, rhododendrons and a remarkable yew walk where Edward Spenser is said to have written the 'Faerie Queen'.
In 2005, the once derelict West-Wing of the Castle was opened as a gallery for contemporary art, with major exhibitions running during the summer season. For full details and opening dates, you can enquire in advance. There are several excellent cafes/tea rooms within easy walking distance in the town of Lismore and also good accommodation nearby.
Prince John built the original castle in 1185. The Estate was granted for a time to Walter Raleigh. He sold the property to Richard Boyle, later 1st Earl of Cork, who rebuilt the castle, parts of which are incorporated in the present castle which was built in the mid 19th century by the 6th Duke of Devonshire. The lower gardens provide woodland shelter for a fine collection of shrubs including magnolias and camellias. The two gardens are delightfully linked by the staircase to the riding house built in 1631. Lismore is the Irish home to the Duke of Devonshire and his family.
