Vilnius, City Walk - Lithuania 4K Travel Channel
The starting point for our city walk is the Cathedral of St. Stanislaus. This time take a look inside, where a Holy Mass just takes place
From the cathedral, we continue to the funicular tramway which brings us to the Gediminas mountain. We pass the National Museum of Lithuania, in front of which stands a monument to the Grand Duke Mindaugas. He is regarded as the founder of Lithuania and even received the royal crown at the instigation of Pope Innocent IV, in 1253. He was murdered in 1263 because he had lost the support of the population.
From the top of Gediminas Mountain, we have a wonderful panoramic view over Vilnius. Countless churches determine the cityscape. The steepness of the flanks of the mountain gives a sense of how difficult it was for attackers to take over the fortress. Gediminas' Tower on the mountain now houses a museum and is the landmark of Vilnius.
Back at the foot of the mountain we go back to the cathedral and pass the castle. From there we turn into Pilies gatve. It is the main shopping street and the tourist center of Vilnius.
Along the street you find plenty of restaurants and shops. Approximately in the middle of the road, the Literary Street branches off to the left.
Innumerable bookstores and antiquarians lined the narrow lane once. The Lithuanian writer Adam Mickiewicz also lived here temporarily.
Egle Vertelkaite, the curator of the Modern Art Center, launched the project Literatų Street in 2009. About 150 artists pay homage to writers and poets who influenced Lithuanian literature. Therefore they created on the house walls about 200 tiles and plaques made of different materials, such as ceramics, wood, or glass. Also some unknown literati are immortalized here.
The road ends at the Cathedral of the Theotokos in the Maironio gatve.
From here it is only a few steps to Uzupio gatve. The bridge over the Vilnia leads to Uzupis, one of the oldest districts of Vilnius. After Lithuania's independence, it became more and more of a bohemian district. In 1997, the artists proclaimed the independent Republic of Uzupis.

Trendy bars and cafes in the Old Town
Where the Neris and Vilnele rivers meet in southeastern Lithuania lies the capital city of Vilnius. Founded as the country’s principle city in 1323, Vilnius has also served as the centre of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Located some 300 km to the east of the Baltic seashore, the city has no true port, making it, like Moscow, a capital deep inland. A fair sized city, Vilnius boasts a population of 550,000 inhabitants and, with nearly 70 percent of the city made up of leafy parks, it is one of Europe’s greenest cities. Hop on one of airBaltic's regular flights to Vilnius International Airport to start a great holiday.
Languages
Labas! (Hello!) Lithuanian, whose only close relative is Latvian, is the official language of Vilnius. Russian is widely spoken and understood, although younger generations will be up to speed with English. A city-break in Vilnius does not require learning either Lithuanian or Russian, but a few phrases may come in handy, especially when lifting a glass to say cheers to your host. Either Oplia or I sveikata will do, as long as there is good eye contact.
See and Do
The old town is the most magnificent part of Vilnius, with one of Europe’s largest groupings of historic buildings. Baroque architecture prevails with a few outstanding pieces in other styles, including the Gothic St. Anne’s Church, said to have been even the envy of Napolean, who sought to pocket the tiny church on his return to France. It is simply stunning, no matter how many times it’s seen. Archcathedral Basilica, first a wooden church constructed in 1251 and then rebuilt several times over the centuries is another strong piece of the city’s architecture, complete with some spooky catacombs beneath for those daring enough to venture in. Otherwise, the faint of heart can enjoy a photo history of the city inside the upper part of the church.
Here is where the Lithuanian magic begins. Outside in the square, find the Stebuklas (meaning Miracle) tile, make a wish and spin round three times to have your desire granted. This little stone marks the Vilnius end point for the human chain or Baltic Way connecting the three Baltic capitals during a protest a few years before the fall of the Soviet Union.
Climb up to Gediminas Castle from Cathedral Square to see this beautiful red brick castle built by the Dukesof Lithuania in the 14th century. Turn and look out for some extraordinary views of the city. The city has several museums of note, including the Lithuanian Art Museum, with collections of local art and some international pieces and the House of the Signatories where the Act of Independence of Lithuania was signed in 1918.
For nightlife, get out to the Old Town where many hotel bars, clubs and trendy cafes await, along with the locals, who know how to create a great time. If possible, treat yourself to a little Krupnika, traditional Lithuanian honey liquor, to get into the full mood and style of Vilnius.
For great service, fly to Vilnius with airBaltic!

Vilnius Travel Guide - Lithuania Charming Memories
Vilnius Travel Guide - Lithuania Charming Memories
Vilnius is the capital and largest city of Lithuania. It lies in the valley of the confluence of Neris and Vilnia rivers. Along with Linz, Austria, Vilnius was the European Capital of Culture in 2009. The word Vilnius is a masculine form of the Vilnia river's name (which is feminine) and refers to the river surge.
Vilnius has always been a multi-national city populated with Lithuanians, Poles, Germans and Slavs from the immemorial time, later on with Jews as well. Although the original city location was lost due to erosion, the present day Old Town reappeared in the Middle Ages.
Although the Old Town is one of the largest in Europe, it can easily be explored on foot. Susisiekimo paslaugos operates buses and trolleybuses in Vilnius. A single ticket for either bus or trolleybus use costs €1(, purchased from the driver (cash only) or ~€0.70/30min if a Vilniečio kortelė (Vilnius Citizen Card) is purchased from a kiosk, PayPost outlet, Post office or Maxima supermarket for €1.50. When changing buses, you need a new paper ticket.
There are several well known foreign car rental companies as well as several domestic companies in Vilnius. City-Bee operates a car sharing network where you can rent a car by the hour. There is no contract nor monthly fee, you pay only for the service when you use the car, no parking expenses when you are not using it. There are 13 pick-up points throughout the city, mostly in the centre and some relevant points in northern districts.
Vilnius Old Town is a city area which began to develop extensively around the Middle Ages and it eventually became surrounded by a defensive wall after some time. The wall was distinguished by its strong surroundings and its shape for a long period of time, but this area is now called Old Town and has a separate status in the Vilnius administrative division. While the urban structure reflects the earliest development from c. 14th century, the architecture of the buildings is mostly from Baroque and Classicism periods with some examples of Renaissance and Gothic, to a lesser extent. One should keep in mind that medieval Vilnius was once a wooden city. The huge fires ravaged Vilnius several times since 1513 to 1749. Therefore, many buildings of the 19th and 20th centuries (still considered new) have Gothic and Renaissance cellars, many of which now are occupied with restaurants, bars or shops. One particular nice area is a block of artisan guilds that is notorious because of its evil fate: 6 Sep 1941 the two Jewish ghetto, commonly known as Vilnius Ghetto, were established. The ghetto operated until 24 Sept 1943. In 1994, the Old Town was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
In both Old Town and the Centre there are plenty of cafés. You simply can walk and choose the one you like or ignore if not in mood, not much effort is needed. There are chains of coffee shops and you can easily find them without a guidance.
There are 65 churches in Vilnius. Like most medieval towns, Vilnius was developed around its Town Hall. Pilies Street, the main artery, links the Royal Palace with Town Hall. Other streets meander through the palaces of feudal lords and landlords, churches, shops and craftsmen's workrooms. Narrow, curved streets and intimate courtyards developed in the radial layout of medieval Vilnius.

Madonna with a Pear. The Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Early 16th century
UNKNOWN ARTIST Madonna with a Pear. The Grand Duchy of Lithuania Early 16th century Polychrome limewood, gilding Acquired in 1929 from Aleksas Majauskas The origin of the “Madonna with a Pear” is unknown. The sculpture was shown in 1931 at the First Exhibition of Ancient Lithuanian Ecclesiastical Art and later deposited at the Museum of Ecclesiastical Art which opened in May 1935. Under the occupation by the Red Army, the museum was brutally liquidated and some of its treasures were transferred to Vilnius, other exhibits were moved elsewhere. In 1942, under the direction of the artist Kazys Varnelis, futile attempts were made to reopen the museum. In the same year, the “Madonna with a Pear” was deposited at the Museum of Ecclesiastical Art. In 1943, the management of the museum was assigned to artist Stasys Ušinskas, however, after one year, the museum’s activity ceased. The history of the museum during the post-war years is quite obscure; a number of works of art were missing, some were returned to the museum. The “Madonna with a Pear” had fallen into private hands and for a long time was considered as lost. In 1951, artist Stasys Ušinskas gave it to the Kaunas Historical Museum and in 1994 ”Madonna with a Pear” was returned to the State M. K. Čiurlionis Museum of Art. It was restored in Vilnius from 1994 to 1997.
