A co-production between the LNOBT, English National Opera and Metropolitan Opera
Premiere at the LNOBT: 23 March 2006
If proof were needed for the proposition that direction and staging can transform even a classic of the repertoire into something higher, better, more luscent and ravishing than it is already is, this brilliant production of Madam Butterfly is it.
AC Grayling - Online Review London
The intimate connection with theatre is clear in this, his operatic debut, where a cinematographic eye is combined with the visual imagination of the Chinese choreographer Carolyn Choa, the associate producer. The final result is a Madam Butterfly of stunning elegance and of a beauty at the same time delicate, poignant and imposing, where each gesture, each dance step and each movement of a fan has meaning and dramatic impact.
Barbara Diana - When East meets West - Il giornale della musica - 6 Nov 2005
The first thing to say about English National Opera's new Puccini production is that it is stunningly pretty. The second thing to say is that, well, it is stunningly pretty. And the third thing... Forget the opera - admire the stage pictures. This Butterfly is so visually entrancing it doesn't matter what the story is about or whether it touches the heart. From the first note to last, the eyes have it.
Andrew Clark - Financial Times - 7 Nov 2005
This is just a fraction of the immense critical response that the new production of Puccini's Madama Butterfly drew after its opening performances at the English National Opera in early November. The late Anthony Minghella, the Oscar-winning film director renowned for his films, The English Patient, The Talented Mr Ripley and Cold Mountain, has made a stunning debut in the opera arena. Collectively, we [the creative team] have always admired the austerity of Japanese staging and how incredible precision is used to achieve great beauty. Our challenge is to create transparency through unadorned yet beautiful series of images. We don't want to interfere with the composer's intentions, rather expose them in a moving evening of music. It's a wonderful opportunity, said Anthony Minghella before the premiere. In collaboration with his creative team he seems to have used the opportunity to the full. This Madama Butterfly was recognized as the Best Opera Production in the Laurence Olivier Awards 2006.

One of the most popular Verdi operas, Rigoletto has received more than ten productions in Lithuania. The tragic story of a hunchbacked court buffoon Rigoletto, who, despite humiliation and terrifying curse, makes anguished attempts to rise above his weakness. A heartrending drama of fatherly suffering, unadulterated love and power of devotion.
Directed by one of the most famous Lithuanian theatre directors Gintaras Varnas, this version of Rigoletto is based on the aestheticism and atmosphere of the German expressionist cinema.

Shadows (Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre)
Ludwig Aloisius Minkus
SHADOWS
a one-act ballet (a scene from La Bayadère)
shown in a double bill with Igor Stravinsky Le sacre du printemps
Premiere: 28 April 2006
Choreographer Marius Petipa
Production choreographer Ninella Kurgapkina (Russia)
Conductor Robertas Šervenikas
Designer Viacheslav Okunev (Russia)
'If you don't like Shadows, you don't like ballet at all', says an acclaimed classical dance critic Clive Barnes. The new production is our gift for ballet affacionados.
Ballet connoisseurs of the world are well familiar with La Bayadère, a ballet composed by Ludwig Minkus in collaboration with choreographer Marius Petipa in 1877. Shadows, or The Kingdom of the Shades, is a scene from the third act of La Bayadère and is often performed on its own.
In fact, this scene of ballet-blanc contains no shadows, nor does it unfold a story. This is a poetic account of a lyrically romantic nature. A composition of aestheticized, pure dance, it draws on the sonata form.
Shadows allows you to see exactly what resonates with your spiritual nature and whatever visions the choreography of the piece invokes in you, just like every listener hears, for instance, Beethoven Appasionata in his/ her own way.
Shadows is a symphony of pas, a poem of beauty and classical dance, and the only panorama of the ballet art of such kind. This scene is a mystery of arabesques. The arabesque is exposed from all possible angles and in all the tempos that classical ballet has gone through in its development, as if those different forms were needled together with a silver thread.
The scene is music and dance incarnate. It is music of ravishing rhythms and a dance replete with ravishing passions. Music and the ballerina - it's all what it is.
Shadows for LNOBT was produced by Ninella Kurgapkina to the original choreography of Marius Petipa. The celebrated dancer of the second half of the 20th century, Ninella Kurgapkina has lately been famous as a ballet coach and balletmaster/ producer. She worked as Rudolf Nureyev's assistant in the production of Shadows for Paris Opera. In Lithuania, she has coached our ballet primes, Eglė Špokaitė, Neli Beliakaitė, Miki Hamanaka and Nerijus Juška.
Desdemona (Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre)
Anatolijus Šenderovas
DESDEMONA
a ballet in 2 acts
Choreographer Kirill Simonov (Russia)
Music Director and Conductor Robertas Šervenikas
Set Designer Emil Kapeliush (Russia)
Costume Designer Stefanija Chanalda Graurogkaitė
Première at the LNOBT: 22 May 2005
Emotional as much as it is conceptual, this contemporary ballet created by composer Anatolijus Šenderovas and a young choreographer Kirill Simonov, is a third national work staged to the commission of the Vilnius Festival. Inspired by Shakespeare's passionate drama, Šenderovas' music displays an inventive yet subtle orchestral palette and saturates the performance with mystery and enchanting beauty.
Following recommendations of the composer and the producers, Simonov took the liberty in retelling the classical tragedy in the voice of Desdemona, the more so that the company had an ideal candidate for the role, prima ballerina Egle Spokaite. Treating the piece as a dream, the choreographer sets out to put together episodes of impassionate intensity, yet occasionally independent plot - and meaning-wise, in a kaleidoscope-like manner. Even though not essentially new to contemporary dance, this dramaturgical principle seems absolutely plausible here, making for a compelling dance performance in two parts.
Running time: 2 hrs
Swan Lake (Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre)
Piotr Tchaikovsky
SWAN LAKE
Ballet in 2 acts
Choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov
Revised version by Konstantin Sergeyev
Conductors Robertas Šervenikas
Designer Viatcheslav Okunev (Russia)
Staging consultants Liubov Kunakova, Ninella Kurgapkina,
Liudmila Kovaliova, Henrieta Melnikova (Russia)
Premiere at the LNOBT: 31 December 2004
It is for a century now that Swan Lake, this classical model of Russian ballet, has enjoyed legendary popularity on the repertoire lists of the world's lyric theatres. Hardly a ballet company exists whose repertoire does not include a production of Swan Lake. Rarely does a ballerina not dream of dancing the stunning swan Odette/ Odile. The immortal theme of Odette the Swan fraught with elegy at times, then radiating a passionate elation of spirits, has become the signature tune of the ballet. A poetical story of romantic love magnificently rendered by the musical genius of Tchaikovsky and talented choreographers Petipa and Ivanov is bound to leave a profound impression in one's heart.
There was hardly a time when Lithuanian Ballet did not have a Tchaikovsky ballet on its repertoire. Swan Lake was the first piece by this composer that an emerging Lithuanian Ballet Company put on stage back in 1927, with five more classical interpretations produced subsequently.

Don Quixote (Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre)
Ludwig Aloisius Minkus
DON QUIXOTE
Ballet in 3 acts
Libretto by Marius Petipa
Choreography by Marius Petipa and Aleksandr Gorsky
Revised version by Vladimir Vassiliev
Production Choreographer Vladimir Vassiliev (Russia)
Conductor Robertas Šervenikas
Set Designer Viktor Volsky (Russia)
Costume Designer Rafail Volsky (Russia)
Premiere at the LNOBT: 29 December 1994
Vladimir Vassiliev: How many people admired this ballet, enjoyed and laughed at its heroes' adventures! How many critics were enraged by the alleged profanation of the great Cervantes' work, and virtually smashed the music into smithereens...
Be that as it may, Minkus' Don Quixote is one of the public's most favourite performances, not only at our theatre, but rather globally. Of course, it would be an idle labour to look for the depths of wisdom or mastery of artistic portrayal inherent in Cervantes' original novel. However, there is no endeavour to reach such a dramatic scale in the ballet. Richly worked-out brilliant movements, tuneful and dashing music, full of Spanish flavour, arrestingly colourful choreography -- all this makes for a splendid entertainment, which is always appealing to the audience, because of its romantic flair, somewhat naive, yet invincible belief in humanity and benevolence.
Performance running time: 2h 30min
Salome (Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre)
Richard Strauss
SALOME
Music drama in 1 act
(sung in German with Lithuanian surtitles)
Libretto by Richard Strauss, based on Hedwig Lachmann's german translation of Oscar Wilde's like-named play.
Translated into Lithuanian by Jonas Vilimas
Music Director and Conductor
Jacek Kaspszyk (Poland)
Director David Alden (USA)
Set Designer Paul Steinberg (USA)
Costume Designer Constance Hoffman (USA)
Lighting Designer Adam Silverman (USA)
Premiere at the LNOBT: 24 November 2006
Performance running time: 1h 50min
Richard Strauss' Salome, according to researchers, is the first opera which carefully illustrates the psychoanalytical ideas of Sigmund Freud. At LNOBT this opera was brought to life by famous American director David Alden. Inspired by the architecture of the theatre, he set the story in the times of Cold War, in some anonymous country of Eastern Europe: I'm always inspired by places I visit. I look for visual information. This time the stage solution is connected with my visits to Vilnius, with what I have read and heard about Lithuania, which endured fifty years of occupation, suppression and persecution. We can see characters wandering around in suits, important part of the set is a huge red pentagram, Salome's famous, ill-fated dance of the seven veils (which is a strong erotic accent of the opera) is performed by...Herodes. The director called the performers of the title role complete opposites, like black and white. The lively fair-haired Finnish singer Eilan Lappalainen and the sensuous Lithuanian Sigutė Stonytė are in absolute contrast. When I met Sigutė, I was enchanted by her. She's a mature and powerful actress, a very good singer. After watching videos of her performances, I saw her Salome as an intelligent, and at the same time a dangerous, woman, who shuns the image of a pussy cat.
Director David Alden:
Two of Strauss' works, Elektra and Salome, are like dynamite, like an explosive mixture, to me. In a one-act opera, which does not even last two hours, we watch a breathtaking story. The story of Salome is extreme.
I like challenges. This opera is my type of thing. I'm quite well-known for very extreme, visceral, shocking solutions. Every time when the audience comes to a new production they've got to be surprised. They should never know what is going to happen.
I'm fond of shocking and confronting audiences. For me it is one of the essential things about theatre -- to make an event, which is not comfortable for the audience, which is challenging, surprising and in a way, explosive.
La forza del destino (Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre)
Giuseppe Verdi
LA FORZA DEL DESTINO
Opera in 4 acts
(sung in Italian with Lithuanian and English surtitles)
Conductor Gintaras Rinkevičius
Director Dalia Ibelhauptaitė
Set Designer Giles Cadle (UK)
Costume Designer Juozas Statkevičius
Lighting Designer Mimi Jordan Sherin (USA)
Choreographer Arthur Pita (UK)
Chorus Master Česlovas Radžiūnas
Premiere: 8 April 2005
Verdi composed La Forza del destino in 1862 by a commission from St. Petersburg Imperial Theatre. Premiered at the Teatro alla Scala, Milan, in 1869, the revised version earned the opera unfailing success.
Rarely mounted on stage, this large-scale opera is nevertheless pretty well known to many for some immensely popular numbers performed separately-- the overture, Leonora's aria and others. The LNOBT production of La Forza renders a magnificent spectacle. Stage settings are fully changed 6 times. Crowd scenes involve a full 140 artists -- soloists, chorus singers, dancers, mime artists, fencers, etc. The leading roles were created by the company's primes, Sigutė Stonytė, Sandra Janušaite, Vytautas Kurnickas, Vytautas Juozapaitis, Dainius Stumbras, Inesa Linaburgytė, Laima Jonutytė, Vladimiras Prudnikovas, Vytautas Bakula and others.
This vibrant new production has been directed by the innovative British-based Lithuanian director Dalia Ibelhauptaitė, who returned to LNOBT following her celebrated Un ballo in maschera. Ms. Ibelhauptaitė employs her inventor's eye ingeniously, whisking the audience back to dark and brutal times where revenge, honour and passion are the driving forces in a world ravaged by war and corrupted morals, where religion, self-sacrifice and flight can no longer bring peace to troubled souls. La forza del destino has brought together British set designer Giles Cadle, one of the most acclaimed American lighting designers, Mimi Jordan Sherin, Lithuanian-born, Paris-based fashion designer Juozas Statkevičius, South African-born choreographer Arthur Pita and the renowned Lithuanian conductor Gintaras Rinkevičius, musical director of Malmo Opera and Music Theatre, Sweden, who collaborated with Ms. Ibelhauptaitė in Un ballo in maschera.
The Sleeping Beauty (Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre)
Piotr Tchaikovsky
THE SLEEPING BEAUTY
Ballet in 2 acts
Libretto by Marius Petipa and Ivan Vsevololozhsky
Choreography by Marius Petipa
Renewed version by Liudmila Kovaliova (Russia)
Conductor Martynas Staškus
Designer Viacheslav Okunev (Russia)
Premiere: 31 December 2006
Piotr Tchaikovsky wrote about this ballet, The plot is so poetic and cut out for music that my composing was accompanied with tremendous delight and enthusiasm which generally determine the value of any work. The outcome seems to have exceeded all expectations: The Sleeping Beauty, choreographed by Marius Petipa and first produced in 1890, was to mark the beginning of a new era in the development of ballet. Grand pageantry, lavish decorations and a superb performance of ballet artists -- all these indispensable attributes are duly found in our theatre's production as well.

The recent production of Giuseppe Verdi's Un ballo in maschera at the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre is not the first time that this opera is being staged on the Lithuanian opera scene. Taking into account that it is numbered among the most popular operas at the opera houses throughout the world, it seems altogether no exception that it has had a long and successful history of repeated productions in Lithuania. Based on a true regicidal story, with the Swedish king Gustavus as its main prototype, the libretto of A Masked Ball caused turmoil among the Neapolitan censors, who were terrified at the prospect of seeing the assassination of a king on stage! Verdi and his librettist, Antonio Somma, had to change the names of the characters involved as well as the whole locale of the setting. After the opera was eventually premiered in 1859 at the Teatro Apollo in Rome, the house was filled with an overnight din of overwhelming approval and resounding cries of Viva Verdi!. This drama of love, duty and jealousy, convincingly told by the great genius of Verdi, is up to move our hearts to this very day.
The world is a masked ball. The face, an outfit and a voice -- all that is but a misleading mask, which conceals the true essence of men, wrote the Spaniard Fransisco Goya. Well, ladies and gentlemen, choose your masks and let the Masked Ball begin!

Vaclovas Daunoras sings “Ella giammai m‘amo“ from Don Carlos
The outstanding Lithuanian bass cantante Vaclovas Daunoras (b. 1937) joined the Lithuanian Opera and Ballet Theatre in Vilnius in 1960, where through 1993 he performed leading roles with the company throughout the world. His illustrious career with international performances includes La Scala and major prizes such as at the Toulouse Competition (a winner). He has critical acclaim for his numerous appearances as Philip II in Don Carlos, seen at the Bolshoi in Moscow, Sweden's Malme Opera House, Ruse State Opera in Bulgaria, and many houses in the Netherlands, Italy and Belgium. Other major roles in Daunoras' repertoire are the title role in Boris Godunov, sung on the Lithuanian State Opera Tour to the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, where he earlier appeared as Monterone in Rigoletto. He sang the latter role at La Scala in 1967 with Pavarotti as leading tenor. Other performed roles in his repertoire are Mephistopheles (Faust), Don Basilio (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Raimondo (Lucia de Lammermoor), Galitsky (Prince Igor), Grand Inquisitor (Don Carlos), King Henry (Lohengrin), Gran Sacerdote (Idomeneo), and Marcel (Les Huguenots). His appearances have included performances of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, the Bach Magnificat, and Verdi‘s Requiem.
Daunoras received the Bronze medal at the Glinka Competition in Moscow in 1962, was a laureate of the Tchaikovsky Voice Competition (1966) and the winner of the 1971 Grand Prix in Toulouse, France.
In 1993 Daunoras moved to the United States where he sang mainly at the Metropolitan Opera. Appearances in the United States also included solo recitals at Carnegie Hall, Weill Hall, and Chicago's Orchestra Hall. In 2012 he returned to his native Lithuania.
This video is based on the Don Carlos production in the Lithuanian Opera, 1981 (scenographer L. Truikys).
