Mayor Bowser Presents Dave Chappelle with Key to the City, 9/29/17
Mayor Muriel Bowser presents the Key to the City to native Washingtonian, DC Public Schools (DCPS) alumnus, and Emmy award winner Dave Chappelle.
The Key to the City – something that is rarely given – is the highest honor an individual can receive. Chappelle is receiving this honor in recognition of his comedic craft, artistic merit, promotion of our DC Values, and overall perseverance.
“Some very special native Washingtonians have dedicated their lives to making Washington, DC better, and they’ve gone above and beyond to show others what makes the nation’s capital the best city in the world,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “Dave Chappelle reminds us what it means to live a life filled with purpose, meaning, and laughter.”
This year, Chappelle is celebrating 30 years in the entertainment industry. During this time, he displayed his many talents on the big screen and stage. He is widely known for his classic Comedy Central television show “Chappelle’s Show,” and for selling out long runs in iconic venues such as Radio City Music Hall in New York City, and Washington, DC’s-own Warner Theatre.
Chappelle earned his first Emmy award earlier this month for his work hosting Saturday Night Live. During the show, Chappelle brought to light his love for DCPS and helped #DCPublicSchools trend on social media worldwide. It was while attending the Duke Ellington School of the Arts that Chappelle got his start on the road touring with his mom as chaperone.
Comedy Central ranks Chappelle as Number 43 of “100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time.” Esquire Magazine has called him “the comic genius of America,” and GQ Magazine featured Chappelle on the cover of its Man of the Year issue in 2015.

Largest Abandoned Factory We've Ever Explored! - Steel Mill Blast Furnace
In this episode we check out the largest abandoned factory we've ever explored - a massive blast furnace known as HFB and it's associated steelworks. This location has been on our bucket list for years and it was amazing to finally be able to travel to Belgium to see it for ourselves. It's truly one of the most impressive abandoned industrial sites in the world.
Special thanks to Pierre M, an ex-employee of the steel mill who allowed us to use his footage of the blast furnace in action. You can see his blog about the steel industry in Liège here:
We also used footage from HF6: The End of the Film which you can watch here:

Captains Courageous by Rudyard Kipling
Real men don't take guff from snotty kids. Neither does Disko Troop, skipper of the We're Here, a fishing schooner out of Gloucester, Massachusetts, when his crew fishes Harvey Cheyne out of the Atlantic. There's no place on the Grand Banks for bystanders, so Harvey is press-ganged into service as a replacement for a man lost overboard and drowned. Harvey is heir to a vast fortune, but his rescuers believe none of what he tells them of his background. Disko won't take the boat to port until it is full of fish, so Harvey must settle in for a season at sea. Hard, dangerous work and performing it alongside a grab-bag of characters in close quarters is a life-changing experience.

Private Screening of On A Roll Documentary
Radio Host, Author, Motivational Speaker, Father and Tireless Advocate for the Disabled, Greg Smith's Life and Work is Showcased in this Inside Look at the Joys and Frustrations of Life as a 65-pound Disabled Dynamo
This film will be screened online throughout the month of July at onarollmovie.com as part of the national celebration of the 25 year anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. We need your sponsorship support to make this happen.
Two million Americans use wheelchairs. 54 million Americans have a disability. From his state-of-the art radio studio in his parents' Mississippi house, Greg Smith—“the wheelchair dude with attitude”—uses his popular nationally syndicated radio program to offer advice, encouragement and inspiration to not only the huge number of disabled Americans but all Americans. His upbeat, tough, and often humor-filled message closes the gap between the abled and disabled by stressing that we all need help from each other, everyday. Directed by Joanne Caputo, ON A ROLL will air nationally on the acclaimed PBS series Independent Lens on Tuesday, February 15, 2005 at 10 P.M. (check local listings) in conjunction with Black History Month.
Greg Smith sounds like a normal dad as he talks to his daughter on his cell phone and calls her “sweetie pie,” but interviews with his three kids prove opposite: “He needs help using the bathroom and getting in bed. He can't play baseball that good.” Yet daughter Berkeley also knows what he can do: “He can move and drive... and talk.” It's an accurate description as we hear Smith telling listeners about his new power wheelchair that can zoom around at 8 miles an hour.
Smith looks tiny and emaciated, but with a deep announcer's voice he interviews Christopher Reeve, then blows the whistle on Clint Eastwood, Nike and Rush Limbaugh, all guilty of insensitivity to people with disabilities. We soon realize that he is no ordinary 65-pound man. He's the host of On A Roll Radio who began broadcasting after a disability job discrimination experience in 1992.
By 2000, more than 40 cities air Smith's program, but without major syndicator support. It's part of the “institutionalized bigotry” that people with disabilities face regularly, according to Smith's producer, Mike Ervin. Becky Ogle (former White House Disability Task Force director) and Judy Huemann (The World Bank Disability advisor) tell us about more concerns fueling current disability activism—nursing homes, independence vs. interdependence and the power of the growing disability voting bloc, now at 40 million.

Why Dave Chappelle Really Left Hollywood
The first 500 people to click this link will get 2 months of Skillshare for free:
I’ve seen countless videos and articles about why Dave Chappelle left Hollywood and went to South Africa. I think none of them truly hit the mark. This video has no speculation, only what Dave has said himself. Once you take apart his interviews and the analogies in his stand-up, I think you can really understand why he did what he did.
A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
A Study in Scarlet is an 1887 detective novel by British author Arthur Conan Doyle. Written in 1886, the story marks the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, who would become among the most famous characters in literature. The book's title derives from a speech given by Holmes, an amateur detective, to his friend and chronicler Watson on the nature of his work, in which he describes the story's murder investigation as his study in scarlet: There's the scarlet thread of murder running through the colourless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it.

Was The Dave Chappelle Special A Classic?
Dave Chappelle’s new Netflix comedy special, Sticks and Stones, challenges its audience right from the title. And though it suggests that Chappelle will brush off criticism before the special even begins, it has inevitably sparked debate over the limits of shock humor, cancel culture, left-wing political rhetoric, and Chappelle himself. The one-hour show includes a hidden Q&A session (accessible only after watching through the end credits of the special) and is themed around Chappelle’s reaction to what he calls “celebrity hunting season.”
