Scotland Quinag Assynt Pt1 Loch Bealach Cornaidh
Loch Bealach Cornaidh Quinag is at the foot of Spidean Coinich a Corbett and overlooked by Sail Gharbh at 2546ft, (Corbett are mountains between 2500-3000ft)
Quinag as it is more commonly known, is formed by a trio of Corbetts forming a Y shaped Mountain Range. Quinag is owned by the John Muir Trust whose aim is to protect these last true wilderness areas. Although Quinag lacks a Munro it is no less of a challenge and offers some of the finest mountain views in the UK. Although a relatively small mountain range it is still a vast wilderness that always impresses. At approx 2min 12 secs in the video you hardly notice the walker on the shore of the Loch.

Suilven -2398 feet (not a munro)
Suilven (Scottish Gaelic: Sula Bheinn) is one of the most distinctive mountains in Scotland. Lying in a remote area in the west of Sutherland, it rises almost vertically from a wilderness landscape of moorland, bogs and lochans known as Inverpolly National Nature Reserve.
Suilven forms a steep-sided ridge some 2 km in length. The highest point, known as Caisteal Liath (the Grey Castle in Scottish Gaelic), lies at the northwest end of this ridge. There are two other summits: Meall Meadhonach (Middle Round Hill) at the central point of the ridge is 723 m high, whilst Meall Beag (Little Round Hill) lies at the southeastern end.
Geologically, Suilven is formed of Torridonian sandstone, sitting on a landscape of Lewisian Gneiss. The surrounding rocks were eroded during an episode of glaciation. Suilven was left poking above the level of the ice sheet, as a nunatak, with the flow of ice creating the distinctive narrow teardrop plan, while carving and scouring the vertical sides of the mountain.[1]
From the coast to the west Suilven looks like a large grey pillar, hence the name which it was given by sea-borne Vikings. From the inland side the mountain has more of the appearance of a steeply-sided pyramid.
In 2005 Glencanisp estate, of which Suilven forms part and the neighbouring Drumrunie estate, were bought by the local community with the help of the John Muir Trust. The Assynt Foundation aims to create local employment and safeguard the natural and cultural heritage for the benefit of the community and future generations, and for the enjoyment of the wider public.
The most common route of ascent starts from the end of the public road that leads to Glencanisp Lodge, about 1.5 km from Lochinver to the west of the summit. From here a path leads across undulating moorland toward the mountain, which will be seen clearly ahead. About 6 km after leaving the road, and shortly after crossing Abhainn na Clach Àirigh (a river), a cairn marks the spot where one should leave the path. A boggy path leads towards Suilven, reaching Bealach Mòr (the Great Bealach) after a little over 2 km. The final pull up to the bealach is steep, and the path is much eroded, but from here the summit is easily attained. The summit itself is broad and grassy, though it is almost totally surrounded by vertical cliffs.
Another route starts from Inverkirkaig, some 4 km south of Lochinver: this route reaches the bealach from the south, passing Kirkaig Falls on the way. One may also start from Elphin, on the eastern side. It is possible to reach the ridge without first climbing to Bealach Mòr from this direction, though very exposed scrambling is required, particularly between Meall Meadhonach and Meall Beag.
By Scottish standards all routes to Suilven are long days; all are around 25 km in length over rough terrain.

The breakfast menu so varied , rooms better than many hotels .try the web site and sample Scotland .This corner is akin to paradise . The little video here is made up of photographs and clips made today .I've attempted to show that beauty , drama and nature which is such a part of Sutherland... The journey back was started a little earlier than usual. Wise after a week of shocking floods in Southern Scotland , Yorkshire , Cumbria and Northern England . Between Glasgow and Carlisle the rain began. The film was edited as I drove passenger seat and all it needs now is a smooth run leading to uploading . The Hermit's Castle . Achmelvich
In-situ poured concrete folly constructed in 1950 by David Scott, an English architect who left the area shortly after completion. Free form and expressionistic, the glass windows and door have been lost.
Beaton notes the interior consists of a bed platform, hearth and storage shelves within a irregular-shaped interior never wider or taller than 2m. Beaton further notes the form and material of the folly harmonise with both stoney Assynt and the Minch spreading below.

Luxury Self Catering Review Achiltibuie - Stac Polly and Locholly Lodge
Customers giving great feedback of their first time visit to Locholly Lodge and the area.
I was looking for somewhere to relax. It's my 40th birthday and I was looking for some way to get away from daily life, get away from the hustle and bustle of work and kids and all that sort of thing. So I wanted somewhere remote, but with good facilities all mon cons and this place came up on searches and fitted the bill. It was very easy to book. All the information was sent through on time, payment was easy. Yeah perfect, really.
We're from East Anglia so it's very far. We flew from Luton to Inverness and picked up a hire car and just drove across Inverness. It was about two hour drive and yeah, pretty easy. Just follow sat nav.
If you think we're only in the south of England, but it's like being abroad is different country altogether. We don't have scenery like this in England.
We wanted to come up here and see the hills and the mountains and the stunning scenery and the locks and all those things.
From what we've seen of the local area so far, it's great. The village has got just about everything you need. It's got a shop and post office for essentials and it's got a pub. There's a restaurant to the next village. So pretty much everything that you need for the basics, but plenty of larger towns within the area that you can ride out to if you want more facilities. So, great location, great scenery, great views.
First walk through the door it was amazing. It was a little bit like one of the show houses you see on the TV programs. So it's a good surprise to walk in and see all the furniture and the decor and the way it's laid out is really good, really impressed. I was surprised how much space there is. There the upstairs with the views out the window. It's brilliant. So, waking up in the morning with opening the blinds and seeing outside the amazing views. Brilliant. That's what we've come for. When you got the great scenery it doesn't matter if it's raining or snowing. We're anticipating it was going to be little bit wet and windy and cold, but it's nice to just come for the scenery.
You had a large extended family or a big celebration for example, you've got the two houses right next to each other. I think it's a great place to bring a large group of friends for whether it's a birthday or Christmas, I think it’d be a great place to come.

North coast 500!
We travelled from Kilmarnock, where we collected our VW caddy from (#rockinvans) All the way around the north coast visiting Inverness, Golspie, Brora Helmsdale, lybster then wick where we stayed for the first night at Noss head where there was an isolated camping/free car park out by sinclair castle! Beautiful when we woke up to the sunrise! We then went on to john o groats, dunnet, Thurso and strathy point where we were very lucky to spot dolphins, seals and possibly an orca all feeding. We then moved onto bettyhill, tongue and headed towards Durness when we found a perfect spot to set up for the night just outside Durness (possibly Heilam) where there was an old school house at the top of the road. We met a lovely couple from Grantown on spey with their we dog who were hoping for the same as us! some northern lights at night but all we got was a beautiful sunset and stary cool skies! Third day we went into Durness to the Smoo caves! and got a cup of cocoa mountain hot chocolate and mocha which was amazing being October holidays. We followed the road down to Scourie, unapool and then we went to lochinver to view some waterfalls Kirk Kaig, which were a longer walk than expected but worth it all! Especially as when we came up we were met by a stag standing at the top of the hill as proud as could be! We also met a lovely family with a dog not too keen on getting back in the car, who were staying in a log cabin not to far away. They gave us some handy tips of places to see including our next adventure to the bone caves in Inchnadamph. These weren't as far to walk (or maybe it was because it was getting darker so we walked faster) and were pretty amazing especially if you had the guts to crawl down the tiny gaps to get inside! Again we were met by a good handful of Stags standing their ground to others however weren't to fussed about us being so close. We then travelled to Ullapool for our chippy mmmm! We travelled through the dark evening towards Laide (country roads were full of deer and stag eyes. Driving carefully was a must).
Tuesday we woke up to another stunning view! blue skies all week. We went down to Gairloch and visited the Victoria falls. We then decided that we would have time to go to Skye, so we went to achnasheen down to picturess Plockton before going down the weaving roads to Kyle of Lochalsh to go over the skye bridge.
Stops at Portree and up to Trumpan by night seeing 'dinosaur' fossils, building stone towers, castle ruins, The famous Storr, cliff faces to dark skies at Trumpan where we got an amazing sunset with the highland coos! We stayed the night by the road side again at Dunvegan.
The following day we travelled back to Portree (missed the fairy falls area coouldn't find it without any signal :( ) and headed for Eilean Donan Castle. Last day for big travels we squeezed lots in going to loch ness, fort william, Glencoe then finishing by the road side at our favorite places Luss.
The next day was our last and the wettest day we had even if just a few showers. We travelled back down to Kilmarnock then home to Sunny Girvan to enjoy a welcoming shower and home bed! Amazing journey will be back to see more of places we missed, maybe some hill climbing and would recommend anyone to do this, especially if the weather was as good as we got! NC500!
