My Return to Montserrat After 15 Years - Part 1: Baker Hill & Little Bay
After almost 15 years, I finally made it back to my home Island, Montserrat.
I hadn't returned before because up until now, my family hasn't had a lot of money to go regularly and also my mother priorities both her education and the education of my brother an I over travelling a great deal.
While on my holiday, I mostly rested as it's been a long and tiring year. And while I wanted to share stuff I didn't want my time their to be all about filming absolutely everything. In any case, here is some of my experiences in this first installment of a line of videos!!
Enjoy!!

Little Bay Development Plan Moves Into Implementation Stage
Mr. Charlesworth Phillip, Montserrat Development Corporation's Estate Manager conducted a site tour of the key areas of development that are currently being implemented under The Little Bay Development Plan.
Geo-physical and geo-technical surveys of the entire Piper's Pond Basin were carried out. This will provide valuable data to assist the engineers in designing foundations for building the new Town area.
The MDC has transplanted over 150 mangrove plants and other species in the realigned river basin. This is to enable the clearing of the basin area for development.
Depending on the results of the geo-physical and geo-technical studies, this area will be excavated and new material from the demolition of Gun Hill brought in and compacted for construction of the Town Centre.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. Montserrat is a Caribbean island in the Leeward Islands, which is part of the chain known as the Lesser Antilles, in the former British West Indies. It is a British Overseas Territory. Montserrat measures approximately 16 km in length and 11 km in width, with approximately 40 km of coastline. Montserrat is nicknamed The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean both for its resemblance to coastal Ireland and for the Irish ancestry of many of its inhabitants.
2. In November 1493, Christopher Columbus passed Montserrat in his second voyage, after being told that the island was unoccupied due to raids by the Caribs. A number of Irishmen settled in Montserrat in 1632. The Irish being historical allies of the French, especially in their dislike of the English, invited the French to claim the island in 1666, although no troops were sent by France to maintain control. It was captured shortly afterwards by the English and English control of the island was confirmed under the Treaty of Breda the following year. Despite the seizing by force of the island by the English, the island's legal status is that of a colony acquired by settlement.
3. On 18 July 1995, the previously dormant Soufrière Hills volcano, in the southern part of the island, became active. Eruptions destroyed Montserrat's Georgian era capital city of Plymouth. Between 1995 and 2000, two-thirds of the island's population was forced to flee, primarily to the United Kingdom, leaving fewer than 1,200 people on the island as of 1997. The volcanic activity continues, mostly affecting the vicinity of Plymouth.
4. Plymouth was the capital city of the island of Montserrat. Constructed on historical lava deposits near the then-inactive Soufriere Hills volcano, the town was evacuated when the volcano resumed erupting in 1995. Plymouth was abandoned permanently in 1997 after it was burnt and mostly buried by a series of pyroclastic flows.
5. Montserrat has a narrow coastal plain. Its few beaches have mainly gray or brown sand because of their volcanic origins. The single white-sand beach is at Rendezvous Bay in the north. Coral reefs line parts of the northern shore. Approximately one-fifth of the island is forested. Though Montserrat’s most-lush vegetation, in the southern highlands, was destroyed in the eruptions, the Centre Hills remained largely unaffected.
6. Tourism and agriculture were formerly the main economic activities. The damage caused by Hurricane Hugo in 1989 and the volcanic activity of the 1990s devastated the economy, which virtually collapsed when Plymouth, the main commercial centre, was abandoned in 1995–96. Montserrat has since relied heavily on British and Canadian aid to build a new transportation infrastructure and provide services. The eruptions damaged or made inaccessible most of the island’s agricultural land.
7. In the 1980s, there were many music recordings in the island. This country was very popular. Some musicians who made recording included Jimmy Buffet, Duran Duran, Dire Straights, and The Police. In 1989, the studio was ruined by Hurricane Hugo which made the recording stopped.
