Why is this small island important for China?
Hainan is an island province located in southern China. 2018 marks the 30th aniversary of it becoming a province. Why does China invest so much in developing this small island? What is its future?
Amazing Beach in China (Sanya)
We stayed in Sanya, Hainan Province, also known as “the Hawaii of China”, for a week. We went to the amazing rainforest in the northeast of Sanya, and also took a boat to go to the famous Xidao, a beautiful small island about 20 minutes by boat from Sanya that offers white sand beaches, snorkeling, diving, parasailing, aquatic motorbikes, banana boats and other water activities. We stayed in a beach resort in the southwest of Sanya, nearby two temples and some great scenery. We ate plenty of delicious sea food from the local market in Sanya and many, many coconuts.
Sanya is definitely one of the best sunny & beach holidays destination in China, which offers many possibilities to experience the traditional and modern culture of this island.

Sanya
City in China
Sanya, a city on the southern end of China’s Hainan Island, has several bays with large beach resorts. Yalong Bay is known for upscale hotels, while Wuzhizhou Island and its coral reefs are destinations for scuba diving, surfing and other water sports. At the city's expansive Nanshan Temple complex, a 108m-high Guan Yin bronze statue rises on an artificial island.
Province: Hainan
Known in ancient times as Yazhou, postal romanization: Aichow (崖州), literally cliff state or prefecture, Sanya's history dates to the Qin Dynasty (221–206 BCE). Due to its remoteness from the political centers during the Imperial China eras on Mainland China, Sanya was sometimes called Tianya Haijiao (天涯海角), meaning the end of the sky and ocean or the end of the earth. As a result, the city served as a place of exile for officials who found themselves out of favor with the country's rulers.
During the Tang dynasty, the Buddhist monk Jianzhen accidentally landed here, using Sanya as a staging post on his missionary journey to Japan.
20th century[edit]
In 1912, Yazhou became Yaxian (崖县; postal: Aihsien). Japan then occupied the area during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1941–1945) and renamed Sanya as Samah. The city then became a naval port for the Second Fleet of the Imperial Japanese Navy and the main embarkation point for the Japanese Invasion of Malaya and Thailand.[citation needed]
In April 1950, the People's Liberation Army took over Yaxian County and established a People's Government. In October 1954, the administration of the CPC Yaxian Committee relocated from Yacheng to Sanya then in 1958, administration of Yaxian relocated from Yacheng to Sanya and Yaxian merged with Baoting, Lingshui, Niulou, and Xinglong, Wanning, to become a large county. In 1959 and 1961 these areas were separated to establish Baoting and Lingshui while Yaxian County remained in its current prefecture. Approved by the State Council of China, Yaxian was upgraded to Sanya City on September 26, 1987 and on December 30, Sanya City was officially established.
In 2007 the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee announced that the city of Sanya would become the first leg of the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics torch relay in China.
In the 21st century Sanya's strategic importance has grown for the Chinese military and is home to several navy bases that help develop and protect the internationally disputed shoals and islands in the South China Sea.[citation needed]

Are Chinese Beaches Dirty and Overcrowded?
I have this awesome little beach near my home in China and I am surprised I don't spend a lot of time there while living in China. For one thing: there is a Shangri-La hotel there with a stellar lunch buffet. Another thing is that it is such a nice place to take a stroll and go swimming. It's a nice tourist destination that most tourist don't know about!
I think when most people think of beaches in China, they think it is some dirty, overcrowded place with and polluted water. Dirty beaches do exist, but not all of them.
I have been to several beaches and have never had that bad of a problem. I took a trip to this beach at the end of June and this is what it looked like!
Does it look dirty to you? Overcrowded?
Nah...
The key to finding a good beach in China is to be located in a small city. There are huge megacities that have beaches but they will probably be crowded and dirty. What you need to do is find the smaller cities that don't have as much tourism and go there. My city, Qinhuangdao, is a little over 2 hours away from Beijing by high speed rail. You can actually have a good time here. The water isn't so bad either. I don't mind swimming in the sea in China. Yeah, I might be cautious to swim in a lake or river here, but the sea is vast enough that you'll probably be OK in these waters. Here, you can swim in the Bohai Sea which is located in the northeast coast of China.
I talk about this more in my video! Check it out!

Nanchang 南昌is the capital of Jiangxi Province in south-eastern China, located in the north-central portion of the province. As it is bounded on the west by the Jiuling. Mountains, and on the east by Poyang Lake, it is famous for its scenery, rich history and cultural sites. Because of its central location relative to the Yangtze and Pearl River Delta regions, it is a major railroad hub in Southern China.
China, or 中国, officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a sovereign state located in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.35 billion. The PRC is a single-party state governed by the Communist Party, with its seat of government in the capital city of Beijing. It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces, five autonomous regions, four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Chongqing), and two mostly self-governing special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau). The PRC also claims Taiwan -- which is controlled by the Republic of China (ROC), a separate political entity -- as its 23rd province, a claim which is controversial due to the complex political status of Taiwan.
Covering approximately 9.6 million square kilometers, China is the world's second-largest country by land area,[17] and either the third or fourth-largest by total area, depending on the method of measurement. China's landscape is vast and diverse, ranging from forest steppes and the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts in the arid north to subtropical forests in the wetter south. The Himalaya, Karakoram, Pamir and Tian Shan mountain ranges separate China from South and Central Asia. The Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, the third- and sixth-longest in the world, run from the Tibetan Plateau to the densely populated eastern seaboard. China's coastline along the Pacific Ocean is 14,500 kilometres (9,000 mi) long, and is bounded by the Bohai, Yellow, East and South China Seas.

10 Best Places to Visit in China - Travel Video
China, the gateway to East Asia, is a fascinating country. It is an ancient civilization that gave the world Peking Man, gunpowder and noodles. Visitors making their first trip to China usually stick to the larger cities. More experienced visitors to the Middle Kingdom will strike out in other directions, where traveling may be a bit more frustrating because of the language barrier, but most definitely doable for independent travelers. Here’s a look at the best places to visit in China:
Why the US Can't Let China Have the South China Sea
China is advancing further in their claims towards the South China Sea islands. There are fishing boats -- lots of them, military boats -- even more of them, and then a newly established city called Sansha -- and it comes with a mayor too, yes. On top of that, it comes with a military garrison.

LEAD IN:
The fishing industry on China's Hainan Island is thriving thanks to the island's booming tourism trade and tropical climate.
With an almost 10 per cent growth in revenue in 2009, local fishermen are set to net more profits than ever.
STORYLINE:
Hainan Island is gaining a reputation as China's tropical playground of the rich.
For generations it's supported a large community of fishermen and their families.
Roughly the size of Belgium and located close to Vietnam's eastern coast, for centuries the island's fishermen have braved typhoons, pirates and high seas to bring back their lucrative catch.
The island is blessed with warm tropical waters, white beaches, and a temperate climate that permits a wide of variety of marine life to thrive.
While most of the island's tourists are sound asleep, Sanya's fish market is buzzing with activity.
Going out to sea is a male-only affair, women often do most of the transporting, buying and cleaning.
In a small warehouse next to the dock a team of fish processors has almost finished for the day.

2011 Hainan, China Bicycle Trip
After a few days in Shanghai and Hangzhou I flew to Haikou, Hainan, bought a Giant bicycle, a tent and used two $7 backpacks hooked together for panniers. Then rode through the center of the island which is somewhat mountainous to Sanya then from Sanya, along the East coast back to Haikou. Total trip about 600 kilometers. Stayed in cheap binguan(s) most nights but also camped out 4 nights. Great trip but the locals really really need to clean up their garbage piles. Hainan is about the only warm place to go in China during the winter. I live in Harbin which is really cold.
