Wilson Mountain Hike - Sedona, Arizona
Wilson Mountain is the highest point above the beautiful Sedona red rock area in Arizona.
From the top of the mesa there is a magnificent panoramic view of the Oak Creek valley and the many prominent rock formations surrounding Sedona. The trailhead is just north of town, and rises gradually the first two miles, before steep switchbacks take you around to the north side of the mountain where you enter a forest of towering pine, oak, and aspen trees.

Horseback riding among the giant saguaro cactus in Arizona
As we travel around the southwest this winter we have been staying at different places where we can both keep our horses and hook up our motor home. This time we stopped at the ‘Lost Cowboy Ranch’ in Scottsdale, Arizona. The owners, Brian and Susan Bowers, were great hosts and gave us great advice about where to ride. We were even able to work our schedules out so that we could go on some rides together.
In this video we loaded up and drove to the McDowell Mountain Regional Park and then rode the horses all the way home. We could have ridden off the property to the park and back…it just would have made for a longer ride. The park trails were very well marked, not only with their names but even with the road numbers. As we headed home we followed signs for 158th Street and when we left the park we road to 160th, which is where Lost Cowboy Ranch is.
The landscape was unique and I loved riding among the giant Saguaro cactus. The desert is much more interesting than I had imagined it to be. The variety of plants, birds, rabbits and other things that live there is fascinating and at this time of year (January) the weather can’t be beat.

Sedona is an Arizona desert town near Flagstaff that’s surrounded by red-rock buttes, steep canyon walls and pine forests. It’s noted for its mild climate and vibrant arts community. Uptown Sedona is dense with New Age shops, spas and art galleries. On the town’s outskirts, numerous trailheads access Red Rock State Park, which offers bird-watching, hiking and picnicking spots.
Nestled amid striking red sandstone formations at the south end of the 16-mile Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona attracts spiritual seekers, artists and healers, as well as day-trippers from Phoenix trying to escape the oppressive heat. Many New Age types believe that this area is the center of vortexes (not 'vortices' here in Sedona) that radiate the earth's power, and you'll find all sorts of alternative medicines and practices on display. More tangibly, the surrounding canyons offer outstanding hiking, biking, swimming and camping.
The town itself bustles with art galleries and expensive gourmet restaurants. In summer the traffic and the crowds can be heavy. Regionally, Oak Creek Canyon begins north of Uptown Sedona; the Village of Oak Creek, however, is south of the city.
Sedona's main attraction is its array of red sandstone formations. The formations appear to glow in brilliant orange and red when illuminated by the rising or setting sun. The red rocks form a popular backdrop for many activities, ranging from spiritual pursuits to the hundreds of hiking and mountain biking trails. Sedona was named after Sedona Arabella Miller Schnebly (1877–1950), the wife of Theodore Carlton Schnebly, the city's first postmaster, who was celebrated for her hospitality and industriousness.
Sedona is located in the Upper Sonoran Desert of northern Arizona. Sedona has mild winters and hot summers. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.2 square miles (49.7 km2), of which 0.04 square miles (0.1 km2), or 0.22%, is water. The red rocks of Sedona are formed by a unique layer of rock known as the Schnebly Hill Formation. The Schnebly Hill Formation is a thick layer of red to orange-colored sandstone found only in the Sedona vicinity. The sandstone, a member of the Supai Group, was deposited during the Permian Period.

Sedona-Jerome-Devils Bridge, Cathedral Rock, Fay Canyon Trails Sedona

This week we continue RVing to Sedona and Jerome staying at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood just outside of both Sedona and Jerome Arizona. We did a lot of hiking in Sedona at the Cathedral Rock Trail, Devils Bridge Trail and the Fay Canyon Trail. Hiking Cathedral Rock trail we had to stop before going all the way up on account of Nikki. So we then hiked around the Templeton Trail that went around Cathedral Rock. That was a nice easy hike and filled with awesome view of Cathedral Rock. Devils Bridge Trail was really fun as we got to drive closer to the trail head with the 4X4 capabilities of our truck. The Devils Bridge Trail was a little tougher in a couple places as we had to do a couple steep rock scrambles with Nikki, but she did awesome! We didn't actually get to go out on the Devils Bridge itself but we did make it to it and watched a few other people going on the bridge to take pics! After that we hiked the Fay Canyon Trail which was 1 mile out and 1 mile back and was an easy hike.
The following morning we did some exploring in Jerome Arizona which was only a few miles from our campsite at Dead Horse Ranch State Park. This was an old copper mining town built on the side of a mountain. It was really cool to see each street was on a different level. Jerome Arizona is one of the coolest old ghost towns we've seen so far and look forward to going back someday and spending more time there exploring.
Sedona Arizona winter was really beautiful with just some snow on the rocks, but much much more comfortable than the temps at the Grand Canyon. Made hiking just perfect!

☀️ Arizona #02 - Sedona for beginners - Slim Shady ????
After a big detour to visit the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley, I finally made it to Sedona!
I convinced my friend Hugo to give mountain biking a try so we rented bikes at Bike & Bean and followed their beginner loop suggestion: Slim Shady - Bell Rock Path - Little Horse to the Chicken Point lookout (for the White Line!) and a return using Llama...
A great beginner loop and a very nice intro to Sedona... Thanks Bike & Bean!
