125: Little Malvern Priory, Herefordshire Beacon and British Camp (Malvern Hills 2019 - Part 3 of 6)
MALVERN HILLS WALK FEATURING LITTLE MALVERN PRIORY, HEREFORDSHIRE BEACON AND BRITISH CAMP
Little Malvern Priory, Herefordshire Beacon and British Camp”
Filmed 29th October 2019
Running time: 20 minutes
For my third walk in the Malvern Hills in 2019 I visit the delightful Little Malvern Priory tucked away under the hills. My walk takes me across Castlemorton Common to join the main ridge of the Malverns at Swinyard Hill to eventually reach the peak of today’s hills, the spectacular Herefordshire Beacon with its Iron Age fort known as British Camp…..
Filmed in the Malvern Hills in the counties of Herefordshire and Worcestershire. Locations include British Camp Reservoir, Little Malvern Priory, Castlemorton Common, Swinyard Hill, Clutter’s Cave, Millennium Hill, Herefordshire Beacon and British Camp. This is the third in a series of six films shot in the Malvern Hills during 2019.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.
Special thanks to Nick Channer and David Hunter for their helpful information used in my research for this film.

Little Malvern Priory - re-bushing roller arms
In our historical restoration of the 1882 Hill & Son organ in Little Malvern Priory (see we are re-bushing the arms on the rollerboards. The holes in the arms are lined with a bushing material to quieten the action by preventing clicking, etc. Plastic bushes are often used in modern mechanical actions, but it's important that techniques and materials match the original in an historical restoration.
In this video, our organ builder Csaba fits new leather bushing to a roller arm. Before the video starts, he has cut a small strip of leather, rolled it and pulled it through the hole, as can be seen at the start of the clip. In the video you can see that it's then softened in hot water and pressed into shape with special rounding pliers. A hole is then made with a braddle jig we've made, and then the bushing is coated with hot animal glue, ready for a new century of service.

HL Twyfords Classic / Viking - Little Malvern Priory
Once came here but couldn't film due to a temperamental phone.
I never expected a toilet and kitchen in here as the church is small with no hall or anything (Don't think so anyway).
Has a nice grey Twyfords sink and the flush is amazing.

Great Malvern Priory explored
The Priory Church of St. Mary & St. Michael in Malvern, Worcestershire was my final stop during the two months spent in England. The priory was originally built as a Benedictine Monastery in 1085 on land belonging to Westminster Abbey. Upon the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1540 under King Henry VIII, the citizens of the town raised £20 and bought the building in 1541 to replace their dilapidated parish church.
Over the centuries, extensions & re-modelling have altered the look of the building, but the original Norman architecture is still much in evidence.
The church is known for having the largest display of 15th century stained glass in England, a large collection of medieval floor and wall tiles, together with numerous fine monuments & memorials. The effigies of John Knottsford, servant of King Henry VIII who died in 1589, his wife Jane and their daughter, Anne. The recumbent figure of Sophie Thomson, circa 1838 by Peter Hollins are amongst the finest.
Of particular note, the medieval misericords dating back to the 14 & 15th centuries. The carvings include scenes from daily life, satirical & allegorical subjects, beasts and the months of the year.
