Petroglyphs at China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station
The petroglyphs are part of the Coso Rock Art District National Historic Landmark, which encompasses 36,000 acres within the NAWS. Since the NAWS is an active military test range, access is controlled by the Navy and can only occur with Navy approval.
Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake
Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake is part of Navy Region Southwest under Commander, Navy Installations Command and is located in the Western Mojave Desert region of California, approximately 150 miles north of Los Angeles. Occupying three counties – Kern, San Bernardino and Inyo – the installation’s closest neighbors are the cities of Ridgecrest, Inyokern, Trona and Darwin. The main gate of the installation is located at the intersection of Inyokern Road and China Lake Blvd. in the city of Ridgecrest.
China Lake is the United States Navy's largest single landholding, representing 85 percent of the Navy’s land for weapons and armaments research, development, acquisition, testing and evaluation use and 38 percent of the Navy’s land holdings worldwide. In total, its two ranges and main site cover more than 1,100,000 acres, an area larger than the state of Rhode Island. As of 2010, at least 95 percent of that land has been left undeveloped. The roughly $3 billion infrastructure of the installation consists of 2,132 buildings and facilities, 329 miles of paved roads, and 1,801 miles of unpaved roads.

Feral Burros at China Lake Weapons Center
This video is provided to show some visual examples of the types of problems that could continue to affect Big Bend Ranch if steps to control feral burros are not taken. The video contains excerpts from a piece produced in the 1980's by the China Lake Weapons Center in California to educate the public to the impacts of feral burros at that site. Although the video was produced some years ago, the facts presented regarding burro impacts accurately reflect the current concerns of Texas Parks and Wildlife resource experts regarding burro impacts at Big Bend Ranch State Park.

trailer: FOOL'S GOLD: CALIFORNIA ROADTRIP IN AN ELECTION YEAR
I ran across a town on a road trip -- A sign on the edge of the town put up by its inhabitants tells its history. Upon reading it, other stories flashed thru my mind: the American novel, McTEAGUE, and its filmic counterpart, GREED (directed by Eric Von Stroheim); the Biblical story of CAIN AND ABEL; and ZOMBIES whose presence symbolize the wasteful consumer(ism) of human life; who can only be killed by disabling their brain. My response also drew from Trona's neighboring landscapes of DEATH VALLEY and the COSO MOUNTAIN RANGE where drinkable water is bestowed to the desert inhabitants from CHINA LAKE — a place where ancient Native Americans carved signs into the rocks along its stream bed — some say to honor the spirits there.
These impressions turned into a feature film: FOOL'S GOLD: CALIFORNIA ROADTRIP IN AN ELECTION YEAR, whose central theme of home belongs to the American dream that has now been overturned, even into global economic crisis.
The film presents a person on the street take; that explores the theme of greed and envy through popular legends and stories of the livelihood and moral fiber of a once wealthy, small, and rural American community of Trona California; after a corporate layoff and its ensuing exodus. We are subjected to the effect of progress and social responsibility upon nature and humankind; as told thru the voices of the remaining elderly population that join to my musings; in order to open an area for dialogue with an audience and enable viewers to preserve this collective experience before it slips away.
During the 1980's we started to see consumerism and a me first shift in American everyday life. From that era to the current time, seems somehow connected to the force of greed seen in society; thru the Madoff scandal, the housing crisis and global economy issues. Somehow this energy is akin to events whereby many Californian company towns vacated into ghost towns.
FOOL'S GOLD: CALIFORNIA ROADTRIP IN AN ELECTION YEAR presents shifting perspectives that suggest psychological dimensions and mimics today's dismembered communications; to portray a situation in total: seen both above and below the surface.
