Little River Railway Station and Yard 22/1/2015

On Thursday 22/1/2015 I went out to Little River and Got a few Videos and Pictures of the Railway Station and Yard. The Station, goods shed and Yard are there as a Museum and Display area with A few Rail wagons and railway items around the station. There used to be a Branch line called the Little River Branch which Ran from the Lincoln to Little River. Lincoln was the Junction for 2 Branchlines 1 the Southbridge Branch and 2 the Little River Branch. The line Ran from Hornby to Lincoln before they both Branched off. Not much can be seen today of the Branch but remains of Platforms, Bridges & Remains of where the Line was positioned. From Prebbleton-Little River You can Follow the Little River Rail Trail.

I went with a couple of friends to complete the 44km return journey along the rail trail south of Christchurch between the small settlements of Motukarara and Little River. Beautiful weather and a nice lunch stop in Little River itself made for a great day out.

Little River Branch

The Little River Branch was a branch line railway that formed part of New Zealand's national rail network. It diverged from the Southbridge Branch in Lincoln and ran down Banks Peninsula in the Canterbury region of the South Island. It was opened to Little River in 1886 and operated until 1962.


Little River contained one of only two significant stands of timber in the Canterbury region, and accordingly, plans were made to build a line to provide convenient transportation and stimulate economic activity. These were finalised in 1879, and construction was under way by the next year. On 16 May 1882, the first 27.44 km of the line were opened to Birdling's Flat, and almost four years later, the next nine kilometres were opened to Little River. There were proposals to extend the line as far as Akaroa, but these did not eventuate and Little River remained the terminus.


In the early years of the line, it operated profitably as large quantities of timber were transported by rail to destinations off the branch. This freight was mainly but not solely loaded in Little River. There was also significant agricultural activity in the area; livestock and farming supplies were important commodities at all stations. As time progressed, the timber traffic declined as no effort was made to replant and sustain the industry, and accordingly, the line's traffic became increasingly focused on the agricultural industry that was expanding into the felled areas.


Passenger numbers totalled over 10,000 in the line's first year of operation, though no dedicated passenger trains ran. Instead, until 1927, passengers were carried on mixed trains. In 1927, an experiment was conducted on the Little River Branch when the Edison battery-electric railcar was trialled. It provided a twice daily dedicated passenger service each way between Christchurch and Little River, completing the trip in 69 minutes. Affordable and efficient, the railcar proved popular with travellers, but its life was abruptly cut short in 1934 when it was destroyed in a depot fire and not replaced due to the poor economic conditions of the Great Depression, forcing passengers back to the slower mixed trains.


Around this time, traffic started to seriously decline. Timber traffic was becoming non-existent because resources were almost exhausted, and road transport was increasingly competitive with rail. A Royal Commission in 1930 had recommended that passenger services be cancelled and freight trains operated only thrice weekly, but provisions were made for passengers until 14 April 1951, and in 1952, goods trains were still operating nine times a week. However, the line was making a financial loss and service cuts could not alleviate it. With the line becoming too uneconomic to continue to operate, it was closed on 30 June 1962, along with the Southbridge Branch beyond Lincoln.


The Little River Branch is one of New Zealand's best preserved former railways. The Little River Rail Trail has been established as a walking and cycling track utilising the former track bed of the branch, in much the same style as the Otago Central Rail Trail. On 28 May 2006, the first section, from Motukarara to Catons Bay Reserve, was opened to the public, and plans exist to convert the entire line into a rail trail, though it may deviate from the railway's original route in places to ensure easy accessibility. Furthermore, the Little River station has been well preserved by the local community, who have converted into a centre that sells local craft and historical items. The platform and goods shed are still in good repair, and some metres of trackage have been installed so that a number of preserved freight wagons can be displayed.

20. Akaroa drive... Little River to Barry's Bay via Hilltop Tavern, cabrio 19 Jan 2012

Today I drove Mum to Akaroa. This delightful small town features a small harbour and beach, popular for day-trippers, as it's just 80 kms from Christchurch city by good sealed road, that winds its way around and over the Banks Peninsula volcanic hills. Historically some French colonists settled there (but Britain had just narrowly beat them, to claim the land and sovereignty. This filmed segment starts at the small town of Little River which is just before Cooptown, which itself is at the base of the first (and longest hill-climb). From memory, the hill climbs to 465 metres above sea level. Mum filmed continuously as we left the Little River (old train station) and I drove, only stopping the camera as we pulled into the carpark at the Barry's Bay cheese factory-shop. I did not film the other hill driving segments. Today was lovely, temperature got to about 26*C, although a strong warm NW wind sprang up after lunch. We had Fish and Chips at the world famous Fish and Chip shop right by the Akaroa waterfront...and pretty good they were too. I regret now I, did not film, the Canary Island Date Palms and the large Norfolk Island Pine trees that grow along the waterfront, barely 3 metres from the harbour's edge where the sea laps softly at the low sea-wall there. With the Earthquake damage to the main commercial harbour at Lyttleton, cruise ships have been anchoring in deep water in the middle of Akaroa harbour, and using their own tenders to ferry passengers to and from the small pier.. I recorded some of that, in full HD and will edit and upload that as a separate video later. This driving sequence is just all the raw footage, in real time, I deliberately used the VGA video setting as I didn't want the ridiculous size file that 23 minutes of HiDef would amount to. After we got home, we tried watching it straight out of the camera onto a 32 inch flatscreen and the picture quality was still surprisingly good. Some compression will take place as a result of uploading to Youtube, but it should still display really well. On the drive back we noticed many more dairy cows, and just a mere handful of sheep, and far less traffic on the return journey. I will also later upload some short segments with Mum in Akaroa that were also recorded with the VGA setting. As my car's 26 years old, and has the low performance/high economy 1231cc engine, I don't exceed about 3,300 rpm, which in 3rd gear, (out of 5), gives about 60 kmh max speed while going up or down hills (or in 5th gear, 100 kmh...the national speed limit, on the flat). Je prendre l'essence, sorry the French influence of Akaroa seems to have gotten to me...I got some petrol just as I's approaching Christchurch on the homeward journey. 22.5 litres at NZ $2.18 a litre for premium. Since my last re-fuelling, so that calculates as 48 mpg (as accurately as I can calculate), so about half and half, normal use around the city during the last fortnight and today's trip. And yes, for most things I can work in Metric or Imperial units, but tend to use metric for almost everything, EXCEPT a car's fuel consumption, which is one of the very few things that I still think of in Imperial measures, so I work out all my litres and kilometres and then calculate it back to Miles-per-gallon. So therefore a trip to Akaroa and back in my car costs about $ 20 for petrol, (whereas travelling by the Akaroa Shuttle bus is about $ 50 return)

Australian Trains - Late running PM7 at Little River

On the 28th of September 2012 a late running PM7 trailerail service is seen speeding through the sleepy town of Little River at dawn. It makes a well timed cross with an V/line V/locity set running an empty car movement to Geelong. PM7 is Pacific National's express intermodal service to Perth (formerly the trailerail service) and usually arrives into and leaves Melbourne in darkness.

I started from Little Waipa Landing, its called the Karapiro section and followed the track along side the lake and then the river, at the end of this trail is an excellent little cafe call Ruhbarb Cafe.

'The Overland' Melbourne ➡️ Adelaide ????05/11/19

A ride on the Overland from Mlebourne to Adelaide on Tuesday 5th November 2019.

This was a special occassion as newly painted in the 'Great Southrn' livery NR31 lead the train back to Adelaide.

On the journey you also pass through the Historic towns of Geelong, Ararat, Stawell, Horsham, Bordertown and Murray Bridge to name a few. In this video you will see footage of some of the towns you pass along the way.

The journey follows the western standard gauge railway between Victoria and South Australia, passing through some very scenic locations. This includes the Grampians national park, and can be see between Ararat and Horsham. The western part of Victoria is a big agricultural region, producing large quantities of wheat amongst other agricultural products. So naturally in this video you will lot's and lot's of wheat fields on the way to Adelaide.

Once you cross the border into South Australia, the scenery noticeable changes. It seem far drier, and dustier in SA. The soil also takes on that classic rich, red colour you might associate with central Australia.

The line between Melbourne and Adelaide can be quite busy at times, and there are plenty of trains in this video.
