Little River Railroad Pacific 4-6-2 #110
JBQ took a ride on the delightful Little River Railroad in Coldwater Michigan on September 20, 2015. We captured some of the train movement in Coldwater and Quincy along with the ride. The Little River Railroad is a family owned and operated not-for-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and operation of their historic equipment.
Locomotive #110 formally worked on a logging railroad in the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee (Now part of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park) from 1911 to 1939. #110 has a unique blind middle drive wheel, meaning that it doesn't have a flange, which allowed it to better negotiate the tight turns typically found on logging railroads.
Locomotive #110, built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1911, is a 4-6-2 Pacific type locomotive weighing only 58 tons. It is the smallest standard gauge Pacific ever built. It was built in 1911 for the original Little River Railroad in Townsend TN. In addition to the logging railroad it also served on the Smokey Mountain Railway from 1940 to the early 1960's when it was abandoned. In 1972 it was purchased, restored and brought to Coldwater Michigan where in 1975 it made its first run for the current Little River Railroad.
If you haven't been to Coldwater to see this unique locomotive running on the delightful Little River Railroad railroad, you should.
Little River Railroad Fall Color Trains
Although the Fall Colors haven't revealed themselves by the time this video was shot, steam was in full swing on this day in Coldwater, Michigan.
In our first visit to the former NYC's Old Road, we catch both of the Little River's steamers in action during the annual Fall Color Trains. These trains are unique in that they utilize a push-pull operation with both of the Little River's steam locomotives. This is also noteworthy as one of 110's last runs before it goes down for its federally mandated FRA rebuild.
110 is the smallest standard gauge 4-6-2 Pacific type ever built, custom made for the Original Little River Railroad in the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee by Baldwin in 1911. #1's history is a bit cloudy, but we can say that the frame was built for the Youngstown Sheet and Tube industrial operation by Porter in 1908.
Sit back and watch one of the more underrated tourist railroad operations in the state of Michigan with some very unique power!
Also take note, that this is the first time we will be utilizing a standardized introduction!

Push-Pullers and Falling Leaves on the Little River Railroad
The fall season sure is a great and popular time to bring the trains out and go for a ride, especially when the railroads are providing some unique opportunities. The same can be said about the Little River Railroad as they were operating both of their steam locomotives No. 110 and 1 during the October Sundays of 2016. With one at each end of the train, the duo performed an interesting push-pull operation between Coldwater and Quincy, Michigan.
We were there on October 23, 2016 with the sun shining on the fall foliage, making the colors instantly pop!

Train Festival 2009 - Little River Railroad 110
Tennessean Rail Videos went to the mess of Train Festival 2009 (FoamFest). This is the second of three HD videos featuring the three locomotives which you could actually kinda chase at the Festival.
The first was of SP 4449 featuring run-bys at several nearly foam-free locations on Friday. The second features NKP 765 on Saturday and this is of the LRRR 110. I was very impressed with the event, mostly the chasing. I still prefer chasing TVRM trains on the C&C. There was too many people to deal with and you couldn't get many shots. And yes, I had some bad experiences with not only many of the Yankee foamheads, but also with some of the moronic staff members.
Northbound Indiana Northeastern road freight
Recently returned to service GP10 #1073 leads GP30 #2185 northbound north of Angola, Indiana with a healthy sized 45 car mixed freight. The cars are generally in a random order, although the ones right in front are covered hoppers for Fremont, Indiana. The rest of the train is for the Anderson's in Reading, and various industries on the Coldwater turn, including Jackson Iron & Metal, Sun-Gro, Darling, Star of the West, and more. December 21, 2010.

Here is the last ride of the day. Little River # 110 puts on a great show. Sadly my phone couldn't get teh whistling of 110.
Train Expo 2014: A Grand Gathering Of Eight Steam Engines!
June 20-22, 2014: the Steam Railroading Institute hosted Train Expo 2014 in Owosso, Michigan. For this, eight steam locomotives attended the event and were under steam. This video will show all eight of the steam locomotives that were brought in.
The two big engines included Pere Marquette 1225 (operated by SRI) and Nickel Plate Road Berkshire #765 (Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society) operated on a half day main line excursions on all three days of the event. At the same time, a number of short trips ran out of Owosso operated by the other six visiting locomotives. This included the Little River Railroad 4-6-2 110, Little River Railroad 0-4-0T 1, Central Pacific 4-4-0 63 Leviathan, Viscose 0-4-0T #6, Flagg Coal Company 0-4-0T 75 and Lehigh Valley Coal Co. 0-6-0T 126. The four tank engines alternated between display, short trips, and the Engineer for an Hour program.
Pere Marquette 1225 is a 2-8-4 Berkshire type steam locomotive built by the Lima Locomotive Works for the Pere Marquette Railway in October 1941. The 1225 is the basis for the design on for The Polar Express engine, and is sometimes referred to as The Real Polar Express.
The Nickel Plate Road #765 is also a Lima superpower 2-8-4 Berkshire, built in September of 1944. It operated on mainline excursions from 1979-1993 and, following a lengthy restoration in 2005, has continued to operated excursions.
Little River Railroad 110 is 4-6-2 Pacific type steam locomotive, and is the smallest standard gauge 4-6-2 ever built. The 110 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia PA in 1911 for the original Little River Railroad in Tennessee. It typically operates tourist trips out of Coldwater, MI.
The Little River Railroad 1 is an 0-4-0T (tank engine) The #1 is a patchwork of multiple locomotives built by various manufacturers. The frame dates back to 1908, while the boiler only to 1930. Number 1 also operates alongside the 110, typically in the summer season.
Leviathan 63 is a 4-4-0 American type steam locomotive built in 2009 by David Kloke of Elgin, Illinois. The 63 is a replica of the Central Pacific Railway's #63 the Leviathan. The engine has a couple differences from the original in order for it to operate more safely and more efficiently, such as the air brakes, and the use of oil as a fuel rather than wood. 63 is one of the newest steam locomotives in the world. It is trucked around to various special events.
The Viscose 6 is an 0-4-0T. The 6 was built in 1924 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Viscose Company. It is trucked around to various events.
Flagg Coal #75 was built by the Vulcan Iron Works in December 1930, for the Flagg Coal Company in PA. Since its restoration in 2004, it has been trucked around to numerous tourist railroads around the country for specials events.
Lehigh Valley Coal Company in 1931 by the Vulcan Iron Works of Wilkes Barre, PA. It was restored to service in 2013, and now also operates on tourist railroads around the country. This event was a rare time to see both of theme together.

Virtual Tour of Coldwater Parks
The City of Coldwater, with a population of about 10,000 people and home to Cemetery Lake, South Lake, and the Sauk River, is developing a recreation plan to serve as a guideline to improve recreation facilities and develop new recreational opportunities.
The planning process will take about five months to complete. The foundation of the goals in the plan will be based upon input from the citizens of Coldwater. The City intends to use the plan to guide their work on all future recreational and parks projects. It is also a strategic document that articulates specific goals to various agencies and organizations that fund parks and recreation improvement projects.
The plan will be developed in accordance to the guidelines for Community Park, Recreation, Open Space, and Greenway Plans published by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Completion of a five-year recreation plan will allow the City of Coldwater to pursue DNR-administered grants.
