Walks in Shropshire: Exploring Church Stretton
Support the Bald Explorer here:
Church Stretton is a small town in Shropshire, England, 13 miles south of Shrewsbury and 15 miles north of Ludlow. The town was nicknamed Little Switzerland in the late-Victorian and Edwardian period because of its landscape and became a health resort. The local geology includes some of the oldest rocks in England and a notable fault is named after the town. Today, Church Stretton is a busy market town in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Harriet, Lola and I, take a stroll through the town on a cold February morning.

Little Stretton, Grindle and Callow, Walks In Shropshire, England, UK
Little Stretton, Grindle and Callow walk was about 2.5 miles in distance. The terrain of the route was a combination of good paths and tracks with some faint or trackless hill sections, plus a short lane section. The walking was generally on moderate hill slopes with two steep ascents and descents. Route finding was mostly easy with obvious paths and good landmarks. The good landmarks help navigate the faint and trackless hill sections. There were no stiles to negotiate.

Smallbatch descent to Little Stretton
HF Walks, 1, Church Stretton area. 18/19.9.18.
A double-bill of walks in the Shropshire Hills. These two are around Church Stretton, also known as 'Little Switzerland'. This is a very nice area for walking, with well-marked trails, beautiful scenery and manageable hills for those that like views.
These two days of walking were filmed following the Hurricanes in the USA and Storm Helena here, so were very windy. As a consequence, the audio quality is affected.

Walks in England: Ashes Hollow in Shropshire
I am in Shropshire, walking the Shropshire Hills. One particular favourite of mine is Ashes Hollow, close to Church Stretton. The Shropshire Hills area, in the English county of Shropshire, is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). It is located in the south of the county, extending to its border with Wales.

Walks in Shropshire: Exploring Grinshill
Support the Bald Explorer here:
Grinshill is a small village and civil parish in Shropshire. The parish is one of the smallest in the district. Grinshill Hill rises above the village to 630 feet above sea level.
Harriet, Lola and I take a stroll through the village and look at some of the splendid buildings and then have a quick poke in the unusual church.

Haunting History of Church Stretton~Shropshire~ England
Church Stretton is a small town in Shropshire, England
People have lived in the Stretton Gap (or Dale) for thousands of years; an Iron Age hillfort on Caer Caradoc overlooks the town. The name Stretton is derived from the Old English words stræt meaning Roman road and tun meaning settlement; a Roman road, Watling Street runs through the Stretton Gap, though the town (and adjacent settlements) were not historically located on this road – during the Dark Ages the settlements grew a short distance away from the old thoroughfare, for defensive purposes. Today the modern A49 road, which was constructed on its current alignment through the Stretton Gap in the late 1930s, runs along a similar course to the Roman Road. The Roman road was historically known as Botte Street.
The sounds of a man with a wooden leg has been heard walking around this public house The Bottle and Glass Inn .
Screams can be heard on Hazler Hill of a young girl who fell to her death down the open shaft of an old copper mine.. In September 1881 a man at
Church Stretton ... saw the ghost of a woman named Sarah Duckett, who
had not been seen or heard of for several years, walking near the old
Hazel Gate tollbar and disappearing close to a disused mining shaft
known as the Copper Hole ...
The large hound with eyes that glow red like hot coals is said to be a manifestation of Wild Edric, local hero and protector of Britain.
Folklore abounds on The Stiperstones and influenced the names of these tors. There is The Devil's Chair, the northernmost tor, where His Infernal Majesty is claimed to take up residence at times. A thunderstorm will immediately occur should a human seek to sit in the place.
At the midwinter solstice, all the ghosts of Shropshire are also said to assemble here.
There are The Seven Whistlers - six birds fly together searching for the lost of their number; if found, the world will end.
Wild Edric, originally an historical figure of The Welsh Marches who made peace with William the Conqueror by 1070 haunts the Stiperstones (as well as around Church Stretton hills - here as a massive hound with fiery red eyes). As punishment for betraying the nation, he (still alive) is confined with his spectral army to the mines of the area (miners have heard tapping noises), to be released at times of National threat. Claimed sightings have happened around the times of the Napoleonic Wars, Boer War, Crimean War, and the First World War.
If similarity with King Arthur springs to mind, there is supposed to a huge magical fish which guards Edric's sword at Bomere Pool, and will only give it up to his true heir.
The Burway is an ancient route which leads up from the town to the plateau on the Long Mynd. It is Shropshire's highest public road, reaching 492 metres (1,614 ft) above sea level and passing close to the highest point of the Long Mynd, called Pole Bank (516 m). Running along the plateau of the Long Mynd is another ancient route called the Portway, though not all of this is open to motor traffic. The Burway is a through route, allowing traffic (though not goods vehicles, caravans or similar) to cross over the Long Mynd westwards to Ratlinghope or Asterton (the route splits into two at Boiling Well). In winter, deep snow sometimes makes the Burway impassable. In 2015 snow gates were installed at various points of access onto the Long Mynd, to deter motorists from using the routes in wintry conditions

Then up the Burway to Shooting Box to the ancient Barrow, before heading to the highest point, Pole Bank at 516 metres (the 4th highest hill in Shropshire). Finally a good look around the Devil's Mouth, a dramatic little peak just off the Burway.
