Winter Gives a Hard Chop to Washington's Cherry Trees
This is the VOA Special English Agriculture Report, from
Official snowfall records for Washington date back to eighteen eighty-four. By early February, this winter had already broken them with one hundred forty-two centimeters of snow measured.
But the storms that buried the city broke more than seasonal records. Heavy snow and high winds damaged some of Washington's famous cherry trees.
In the spring, crowds expect a beautiful show as the trees blossom along the edge of the Tidal Basin next to the Jefferson Memorial.
Workers picked up broken branches, some as thick as fifteen centimeters. A few trees have lost their canopies.
Peak blooming, when the trees are in full flower, may be delayed a little. But the National Park Service says people can expect the usual show of pink and white flowers. This year's National Cherry Blossom Festival is set for March twenty-seventh through April fourth.
Twelve kinds of cherry trees grow around the Tidal Basin. The first trees were a gift from Japan in nineteen twelve. The Japanese later sent two more gifts of cherry trees.
Cherry trees are valued for their flowers but also for their wood and their fruit. The United States and Turkey are leading producers of cherries, though not all cherry trees produce fruit.
The two major kinds of cherries are sweet and sour. Sour cherries, sometimes called tart cherries, are used in foods and drinks.
The state of Michigan is the nation's top producer of sour cherries. Washington -- not the city, but the state in the Pacific Northwest -- is the top producer of sweet cherries.
Now speaking of Washington and cherry trees, maybe you have heard the story about America's first president. As a boy George Washington supposedly told his father: I cannot tell a lie. I chopped down the cherry tree. Is the story true? Probably not, says the Web site for Washingtons home at Mount Vernon, Virginia.
February twenty-second was George Washington's birthday. But not much is known about his childhood. So it seems that a biography written shortly after his death included several invented stories about his early life. These were meant to show where he got his heroic qualities. Children then learned the story of the cherry tree in a school book, and it became rooted in popular history.
And thats the VOA Special English Agriculture Report. Transcripts, MP3s and captioned videos of our reports can be found at voaspecialenglish.com. You can also practice your English by posting comments.

A History of Death and Illness in the White House: U.S. Presidents' Disabilities (1993)
Years after Kennedy's death, it was revealed that in September 1947, while Kennedy was 30 and in his first term in Congress, he was diagnosed by Sir Daniel Davis at The London Clinic with Addison's disease, a rare endocrine disorder. In 1966, his White House doctor, Janet Travell, revealed that Kennedy also had hypothyroidism. The presence of two endocrine diseases raises the possibility that Kennedy had autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type 2 (APS 2).
Kennedy also suffered from chronic and severe back pain, for which he had surgery and was written up in the American Medical Association's Archives of Surgery. Kennedy's condition may have had diplomatic repercussions, as he appears to have been taking a combination of drugs to treat severe back pain during the 1961 Vienna Summit with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. The combination included hormones, animal organ cells, steroids, vitamins, enzymes, and amphetamines, and possible potential side effects included hyperactivity, hypertension, impaired judgment, nervousness, and mood swings.[260] Kennedy at one time was regularly seen by no fewer than three doctors, one of whom, Max Jacobson, was unknown to the other two, as his mode of treatment was controversial[261] and used for the most severe bouts of back pain.[262]
There were disagreements among his doctors, into late 1961, over the proper balance of medication and exercise, with the president preferring the former as he was short on time and desired immediate relief.[170] During that timeframe the president's physician, George Burkley, did set up some gym equipment in the White House basement where Kennedy did stretching exercises for his back three times a week.[263] Details of these and other medical problems were not publicly disclosed during Kennedy's lifetime.
Eisenhower began smoking cigarettes at West Point, often two or three packs a day. Eisenhower stated that he gave myself an order to stop cold turkey in March 1949 while at Columbia.[44][204] He was probably the first president to release information about his health and medical records while in office,[205] On September 24, 1955, while vacationing in Colorado, he had a serious heart attack that required six weeks' hospitalization, during which time Nixon, Dulles, and Sherman Adams assumed administrative duties and provided communication with the President.[206] He was treated by Dr. Paul Dudley White, a cardiologist with a national reputation, who regularly informed the press of the President's progress. Instead of eliminating him as a candidate for a second term as President, his physician recommended a second term as essential to his recovery.[207]
As a consequence of his heart attack, Eisenhower developed a left ventricular aneurysm, which was in turn the cause of a mild stroke on November 25, 1957. This incident occurred during a cabinet meeting when Eisenhower suddenly found himself unable to speak or move his right hand. The stroke had caused an aphasia. The president also suffered from Crohn's disease, a chronic inflammatory condition of the intestine, which necessitated surgery for a bowel obstruction on June 9, 1956. He was still recovering from this operation during the Suez Crisis.
Eisenhower's health issues forced him to give up smoking and make some changes to his dietary habits, but he still indulged in alcohol. During a visit to England he complained of dizziness and had to have his blood pressure checked on August 29, 1959; however, before dinner at Chequers on the next day his doctor General Howard Snyder recalled Eisenhower drank several gin-and-tonics, and one or two gins on the rocks ... three or four wines with the dinner.[208]
The last three years of Eisenhower's second term in office were ones of relatively good health. Eventually after leaving the White House, he suffered several additional and ultimately crippling heart attacks.[209] A severe heart attack in August 1965 largely ended his participation in public affairs.[210] In August 1966 he began to show symptoms of cholecystitis, for which he underwent surgery on December 12, 1966, when his gallbladder was removed, containing 16 gallstones.[209] After Eisenhower's death in 1969 (see below), an autopsy unexpectedly revealed an adrenal pheochromocytoma,[211] a benign adrenaline-secreting tumor that may have made the President more vulnerable to heart disease. Eisenhower suffered seven heart attacks in total from 1955 until his death.

Surprising Secrets Hidden Inside the White House
The Emblematic White House. Home and Office to the President of the United States of America. Over the last 226 years it has been renovated, had extensions built and even been burnt down, so it's no surprise that today it's full of hidden features and built-in secrets!
#1 Secret Tunnels
There is actually a whole network of underground passages, rooms and tunnels buried beneath the White House. Two floors deep. Complete with a Bowling Alley, Dentist's and even a chocolate shop with rumors however spurious of a system of tunnels leading to other important buildings.
#2 Secret Alarms
You'd expect the president's Oval Office to be packed full of security guards, to protect him in case negotiations go sideways, right? But his elite bodyguards actually have to wait outside. Instead there are various items on the president's desk that if casually moved trigger secret alarms, signalling the guards to come rushing in.
#3 Air and Water Supply
Sometimes not all citizens are rooting for the same candidate to become president and it wouldn't take much for them to poison the President's water or air supply. That's why the water that enters the grounds passes through it's own special filtration system and is constantly monitored for toxins. Even the air inside the White House is pressurized higher than the air outside thus keeping out any possible chemical or biological attacks.
#4 Infrared Sensors
Over the years security within the White House grounds has multiplied. Gone are the days when you could wander right on up to the front door, as security has the place fenced off, with restricted areas hidden guards with dogs and even infrared sensors which trigger the alarms.
#5 Secret Trapdoor
For years it has been thought that there is a secret trapdoor underneath the President's desk. This perhaps stems from JFK's presidency, where an opening panel was added. However there is talk of a secret door panel in a wall in the Oval Office which leads to a hidden staircase descending into the White House's underground tunnel system.
#6 Rooftop Surveillance
Other than the occasional agents with cameras, the rooftops are filled with instruments and antennas said to be used to monitor the airspace above the grounds and perhaps even anti-drone vigilance.
#7 Pool Tunnel
The White House has an outdoor poor for the first family to enjoy the summer months. However heaven forbid an avid paparazzi should snap a picture of the Pressi in a speedo, the pool can be accessed through an underground tunnel. Problem solved.
#8 Pressure Pads
Apart from hidden sensors, the Oval Office also has pressure pads built into the floor so even though the agents stay outside, they know where the President is at all times, in case they have to burst in at any given time.
#9 Wine Cellar
The size of the first family's wine cellar is kept very hush hush, however judging by the underground bowling alley and chocolate shop, one can only imagine a winery of presidential proportions. But according to one source the wine cellar is only the size of a small closet.
#10 No Secrets
Having the most dangerous job in America requires a high level of surveillance. Dozens of agents knowing the locations and activities of the First Family members at all times. This becomes awkward when the President or code name: Renegade and his wife: Renaissance want to get intimate. Or according to inside agents code: When Renegade and Renaissance are Discussing the Bosnian Problem.
Which of these White House Secrets surprised you the most?
