Littlecote House is a large Elizabethan country house and estate in the civil parishes of Ramsbury and Chilton Foliat in the English county of Wiltshire, near to Hungerford. The estate includes 34 hectares of historic parklands and gardens, including a walled garden from the 17th and 18th centuries. In its grounds is Littlecote Roman Villa. Littlecote House is a Grade I listed building. It is now a hotel and leisure centre.

Halfway between #Marlborough and #Hungerford and not far from #Newbury and the #M4 lies the magnificent #countryhouse #hotel Littlecote House and in its grounds lies their spectacular #roman #mosaic.

Take a walk into their #parkland and you will fine a vast roman #villa built during the reign of #JuliantheApostate featuring a #collegium for the roman #cult of #bacchus. Stunningly well preserved this mosaic features a boss of #Persephone #Venus #Nemesis and #Demeter all circling #Orpheus. It features a unique #triconch of three asps, the only one in #Britain. This rare #pagan site was built at the very end of neo-platonism and the rise of #christianity.

The last gasp of #RomanCivilisation before the #FallofRome into the #darkages.

Littlecote House - Dji Mavic Pro - Drone Footage

During the medieval period there was a manor at Littlecote, which was owned by the Durnford family in the C12. The manor came in the ownership of the Darell family c 1415. In the late C16 the manor house, by then called Littlecote House, was rebuilt for William Darell, and a gatehouse and garden walls were added (VCH 1983). In 1589 the estate passed to Sir John Popham, later Lord Chief Justice of England, whose family owned the estate until 1929. In 1730, the then owner of Littlecote House, Sir Francis Popham, discovered the remains of a Roman villa in the park with a rare decorative floor mosaic. By the late C17 or early C18, Littlecote House had a series of walled gardens, with a raised walk offering views over an extensive deer park with rides and avenues, and a hunting lodge.
