Sharuna Sagar reports on new play Clear White Light at Newcastle Live Theatre
A psychiatric hospital, the writings of Edgar Allan Poe and the hits of Lindisfarne. An unusual combination for a brand new play in Newcastle. Clear White Light was inspired by the life and music of Tyneside singer songwriter Alan Hull. It stars Emmerdale actress Charlie Hardwick and is the first production for Live Theatre's new Artistic Director.

liveNirvana.com presents:
Nirvana live 10/23/89 - Riverside - Newcastle upon Tyne, UK
PREVIOUSLY UNHEARD NEW SHOW
LiveNirvana.com is pleased to present a recording of NIRVANA's first concert in the UK (and Europe) which took place on October 23rd 1989 at Riverside, Newcastle upon Tyne. The show was the first on their Heavier Than Heaven tour of Europe supporting their debut album 'Bleach'.
The survival of documentation of NIRVANA's first concert outside North America is remarkable: a cassette dub of a presumed-lost master tape was found with candle wax melted onto its case, originating from the squat in which it was rescued from. More than 25 years after the event, an Italian Nirvana fan and concert enthusiast was scouring the internet for clues as to this recording's possible existence and in 2015 stumbled across a cryptic reference to the aforementioned tape, in a comment on Facebook. A fellow Nirvana fan in Brazil followed up the lead and the owner kindly allowed LiveNirvana.com to professionally digitize the cassette. Today we can now share it with the world.
The band arrived in UK on 21 October 1989 to play a 35-date European tour with Sub Pop label-mates TAD. The Riverside in Newcastle upon Tyne was the first stop on the adventure. The bands joined Mudhoney at the tour's climax at the London Astoria, in a reprise of the Lame Fest held in Seattle earlier in the year.
Audience recordings of all UK shows of the 1989 tour are now circulating, which is a testament to the tenacity and hard work of the collectors who have devoted countless hours over decades to tracking them down. This leaves a concert on 29 October 1990 at The Waterfront, Norwich being the only aurally undocumented UK NIRVANA show, alongside incomplete recordings for 01 December 1991 at The Southern Bar, Edinburgh (two and a half songs of which finally surfaced earlier this month) and 03 December 1991 at Rock City, Nottingham. It is further believed that certain UK concerts were videoed, for example Bristol 1991 and Bradford 1991, for which complete footage is not available at the moment.
If you recorded or photographed a NIRVANA concert, or know someone who did, or have any idea where to find the missing recordings noted above, please get in touch with the liveNIRVANA.com team.
Not to be sold or monetized in any way.

A Walk in Newcastle Upon Tyne England Newcastle Upon Tyne is commonly known as Newcastle.
Newcastle Upon Tyne commonly known as Newcastle is a city in Tyne and Wear, North East England, 103 miles (166 km) south of Edinburgh and 277 miles (446 km) north of London on the northern bank of the River Tyne, 8.5 mi (13.7 km) from the North Sea. Newcastle is the most populous city in the North East and forms the core of the Tyneside conurbation, the eighth-most populous urban area in the United Kingdom.[2] Newcastle is a member of the English Core Cities Group[6] and is a member of the Eurocities network of European cities. The Quayside
The Tyne Gorge, between Newcastle on the north bank and Gateshead—a separate town and borough—on the south bank, is known for a series of dramatic bridges, including the Tyne Bridge of 1928 which was built by Dorman Long of Middlesbrough, Robert Stephenson's High Level Bridge of 1849, the first road/rail bridge in the world, and the Swing Bridge of 1876.[85]
Large-scale regeneration has replaced former shipping premises with imposing new office developments; an innovative tilting bridge, the Gateshead Millennium Bridge was commissioned by Gateshead Council and has integrated the older Newcastle Quayside more closely with major cultural developments in Gateshead, including the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, the venue for the Turner Prize 2011[86] and the Norman Foster-designed The Sage Gateshead music centre. The Newcastle and Gateshead Quaysides are now a thriving, cosmopolitan area with bars, restaurants and public spaces. As a tourist promotion, Newcastle and Gateshead have linked together under the banner NewcastleGateshead, to spearhead the regeneration of the North-East. The River Tyne had the temporary Bambuco Bridge in 2008 for ten days; it was not made for walking, road or cycling, but was just a sculpture.
Newcastle was part of the county of Northumberland until 1400 when it became a county of itself, a status it retained until becoming part of Tyne and Wear in 1974. The regional nickname and dialect for people from Newcastle and the surrounding area are Geordie. Newcastle also houses Newcastle University, a member of the Russell Group, as well as Northumbria University.
The city developed around the Roman settlement Pons Aelius and was named after the castle built in 1080 by Robert Curthose, William the Conqueror's eldest son. The city grew as an important centre for the wool trade in the 14th century and later became a major coal mining area. The port developed in the 16th century and, along with the shipyards lower down the River Tyne, was amongst the world's largest shipbuilding and ship-repairing centres.
Newcastle's economy includes corporate headquarters, learning, digital technology, retail, tourism and cultural centres, from which the city contributes £13 billion towards the United Kingdom's GVA. Among its icons are Newcastle United football club and the Tyne Bridge. Since 1981 the city has hosted the Great North Run, a half marathon which attracts over 57,000 runners each year.
A walk around Newcastle City Centre
A walk around the historic city centre of Newcastle Upon Tyne, taking in the city's oldest church, a famous football club, the electric light bulb, the birthplace of a Catholic leader, haunted theatres and a hospital which wasn't a hospital...

S1 Ep9 - Newcastle upon tyne City at Night
The city of Newcastle upon Tyne after dark. Just a quick trip around some of the nightspots of the city, even on a Tuesday!
There are some great places to eat and drink from the latest spot, Stack to the well established Chinatown.
The sights to see, both day and night, are numerous and there's usually something going on somewhere in the city.
As we head into the darker evenings and the colder weather Xmas is just around the corner. The window at Fenwick's is spectacular each year and even has its own special reveal event, where local radio hold a fun afternoon and all the families get involved. The looks on all the children's faces as the Christmas window is revealed is priceless. I will certainly be heading over again this year to capture all the fun and festivities for this Vlog.
The shopping centres in and around the city, just a couple of examples, Eldon Square, The Gate, which appear in the video, are packed with great places for fashion and the latest gadgets as well as lots of brilliant bars and restaurants.
This is just a little snippet of the city after dark, as the week goes on so the nightlife comes more to life until, by Thursday night, you would think you were in London or New York! By Friday and Saturday all the Hens and Stags will have arrived and the place is absolutely buzzing.
It's not all mad hustle and bustle. If you are looking for a relaxing break/visit there are plenty of parts of the city that will cater for your needs, including theatres and cinemas through to fine dining for two for a more romantic feel.
No doubt I will be back here plenty more times in the future as I love everything about this wonderful city and all it has to offer.

Newcastle Panto's Last Goodbye to the Tyne Theatre
30th December 2016 saw Newcastle Panto's final ever panto performance at the Tyne Theatre after theatre management took the decision to replace the company with a theatre company from the south of England. The end of an era and it could have been the end for the company too, but you can't keep a good panto down!
