RV Travel Life | Exploring Carlsbad Caverns and Living Desert Zoo & Gardens
Happy National Park Week 2017!
Explore the Carlsbad Caverns National Park and Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park with us. There are several different cave hikes that are offered, and some are guided with a park ranger. They have audio tours available for rental.
John finally got to get his Access Card. Since he is a disabled veteran, we brought his DD 214 and his Veterans Affairs award letter to the park with us. This is a card that grants him access to national parks, and discounted fees + an accompanying person. It is also his for life, it never expires. This is one of the things that is not talked about very much but if you are a veteran and wondering how this works or have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us. It was really easy to get with the right documents.
Carlsbad Caverns are a spectacular adventure in hiking (even on the paved path). The self-guided tour of the Big Room is 1 mile long and takes 1-2 hours to hike.
The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park is a really neat walking zoo. They exhibits from birds of prey to range animals on a beautiful nature path.

OTPWR Carlsbad - Sitting Bull Falls - Living Desert Zoo - Roswell UFOs - Full Time RV Family Living
We left the gulf coast for this??!!! It was quite chilly at our next destination of Carlsbad, New Mexico. Temps dropped below freezing at night and on New Year's day. We thought a hike at Sitting Bull Falls on New Year's day would be fun, but the weather moved in, froze the roads and made it too sketchy to continue with those plans. So, off to Starbucks we were! The sun did finally show itself by the weekend and we were able to return to the falls and see their splendor while basking in the sun. Since the government shutdown was in effect, we made a trip to the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens. We really enjoyed our time there learning about the various plants and animals that inhabit the vicinity of the Guadalupe Mountains. On our way out of Carlsbad, the weather was to bring snow over the pass through Cloudcroft, so

Our Family Trip To The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens Palm Desert California
The Living Desert’s mission is desert conservation through preservation, education and appreciation.
The objectives of The Living Desert are:
to preserve a portion of the Colorado Desert in its natural state;
to foster, through interpretive exhibits, programs and publication, an awareness of, and an appreciation for, the variety of plants and animals in worldwide ecosystems;
to build up under controlled conditions, populations of various species of desert animals and plants threatened with extinction in the wild state;
and to foster through cooperative research and educational programs, biological studies contributing to the protection of desert species in a wild state.
We are a non-profit, 501c3 (exempt from taxation) organization with a volunteer Board of Trustees (40), and a paid CEO/President.
The Living Desert’s Board of Trustees is made up of business and community leaders who work with the organization to secure gifts for capital, programming and endowment expansion. Its purpose is to support and enhance zoological programs by providing facilities, funds and advice. The President and the Trustees oversee the Zoo Endowment which helps to provide long-term stability for The Living Desert.
The Living Desert was established in 1970 by several trustees of the Palm Springs Desert Museum who foresaw the impact that resort development would have on their local desert ecosystem. This foresight led to an interpretive nature trail and preserve in Palm Desert. Among the trustees was Philip L. Boyd who also founded the Riverside campus of the University of California and the Deep Canyon Research Station in Palm Desert. Among his first tasks was to hire a resident naturalist. This person turned out to be a young woman with energy, intelligence and ambition, as well as experience as a zoo keeper and park ranger, plus graduate work in wildlife biology.

MAKING CONTACT WITH ALIENS? ????????The Very Large Array(VLA), New Mexico ???? Full Time RV Living
MAKING CONTACT WITH ALIENS? ????????The Very Large Array, New Mexico ???? Full Time RV Living We were traveling through New Mexico and Josh has always wanted to visit the Very Large Array. We camped out at a picnic area on Highway 66. It was such a quiet spot it was eerie. We had a nights rest back in the cold weather. And headed off in the morning to the Very Large Array located on the Plains of San Agustin, 50 miles west of Socorro, New Mexico.
Josh loves science, physics, and space so he has been wanting to see the Very Large Array for a long time. It is a very famous sight. Having been in many movies, and even in a music video.
The Very Large Array is used to gather pictures from space using Radio signals. It is the most powerful one of its kind in the world. The dishes are 92 feet tall and 82 feet wide and can be moved into various formations spanning a distance of 13 miles.
Wikipedia states The VLA is a multi-purpose instrument designed to allow investigations of many astronomical objects, including radio galaxies, quasars, pulsars, supernova remnants, gamma ray bursts, radio-emitting stars, the sun and planets, astrophysical masers, black holes, and the hydrogen gas that constitutes a large portion of the Milky Way galaxy as well as external galaxies. In 1989 the VLA was used to receive radio communications from the Voyager 2 spacecraft as it flew by Neptune. It is not, despite depictions in popular culture such as the movie Contact, used to assist in the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence

OUR STORY
We are Josh and Kali from Seattle, Washington. In 2015 we decided to change our lives. We sold everything we owned bought a RV and a truck starting living in our RV full time in 30 days! Full time rv living was a major change for us. We hadn't made any plans to change to this rv life until one day it hit us we couldn't have the American Dream and travel to. Choosing to travel meant downsizing our life and becoming minimalists. It was the BEST decision we have ever made. Now we plan to travel non-stop in our 33ft. fifth wheel full time. Join the adventure as we RV across the United States (US)

The Living Desert - Palm Desert
The Living Desert was established in March 1970 as a wilderness preserve in Palm Desert CA. Today it's one of the most unique places in the country and stands out as the only American zoo and garden dedicated solely conserving the deserts of the world. Here's a video of our day at the Living Desert. Check out the photo gallery here:

Karen Sausman was President and CEO of The Living Desert for forty years and has recently retired. The vision that built The Living Desert and the love of the desert shared by Phillip Boyd, Karen Sausman, our members, volunteers, staff, trustees, and friends, will be carried forward by our new President and CEO, Allen Monroe.
For almost four decades The Living Desert has been engaged in the important work of preserving, conserving and interpreting the desert and all its varied plant and animal life. Even as we take immense pride in our accomplishments over the last forty years, we remain as dedicated as ever to the goals that initially inspired us when we first began operations in March of 1970.

Beautiful semi-desert landscape in New Mexico, USA
Beautiful semi-desert landscape of New Mexico, USA that I videographed on my travel in Albuquerque - Santa Fe, in Aug 9, 2013. Nothing special. But there is something special makes this state - The Land Of Enchantment.
Everyday is a beautiful day. Every landscape is a beautiful thing that the nature's crafted.

San Lorenzo Canyon, New Mexico Desert
All year. In summer it will be hot, and you should beware of flash floods from thunderstorms. Snow is unlikely to last long, so winter should be fine. How much time you spend here depends on how long you want to explore. You could easily spend a whole day.
Exit from Interstate 25 at San Acacia (Exit 163), which is about 3.5 miles past the rest area. Head south on the east frontage road (you are following the signs toward Polvadera, although you will not go there). After about 2.2 miles on the frontage road, you will see a narrow (one car wide) underpass under the Interstate (this is the second underpass, and there are also some bridges that go under the freeway). The turnoff from the frontage road is just north of some houses.
After you cross under I-25, the paved road goes left, and a dirt road goes more-or-less straight ahead. Take this dirt road. I set the odometer to 0.0 here.

Bud's Place RV Park is located at:
900 Standpipe Rd
Carlsbad, NM 88220
Their Phone number is: (575) 200-1865
This is a brand new park as of September 2016. The park itself is already really awesome. At the time we were there, they were still working on landscaping. The buildings including bathrooms, office, and laundry were all immaculate. They have a dedicated dog area, with fencing. The WiFi signal is very good (as we are uploading this video with it currently). You can actually stream videos from Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Netflix. The RV park is located 28 miles from Carlsbad National Park (actually one of the closest parks to Carlsbad National Park) and it is just on the edge of Carlsbad, NM. The RV Park is also 2.5 miles from Living Desert Zoo & Gardens State Park.

Carlsbad Caverns- left us amazed
We visited Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico over Spring Break and it was so amazing it is hard to describe. This video tries to capture some of the highlights, but it doesn't do justice to seeing it with your own eyes. BTW- don't go late in the day as after 3:00pm the line for the elevator back to the top starts to get long and soon after that they close the gates for the walk out option and everyone needs to take the elevator to get back out.
