Eco Holiday in Italy: Fontanaro organic and ecological farm house between Tuscany and Umbria
Fontanaro organic farm house (winter edition video teaser).
A country slow living experience between Tuscany and Umbria. 5 charming guest houses with: maxi Jacuzzi, infinity pool, internet wireless, cooking and wine classes, free organic vegetables from the garden, cultural experiences, horse riding very closed to the farmhouse.
There are few places where you can find serenity, explore medieval hill towns, Etruscan art, and historic cities, and enjoy great food and extraordinarily welcoming hosts. Fontanaro offers all that and much more.
The Fontanaro estate contains a beautifully restored two story stone farmhouse with two separate luxury villas. Located in Umbria, the green heart of Italy on the border of Tuscany, the property is set on 40 acres with 2.000 olive trees and a small vineyard of old Sangiovese's grapes. The view lends itself to rolling green hills facing breathtaking sunsets and sunrise like a Perugino's painting.
The farm house, built in 1893, is beautifully restored with modern comforts. It is surrounded by a large grass lawn with lemon trees, an extensive collection of old english roses, a great variety of many flowers and a vegetable garden. There is a bread oven, barbecue and a large private Infinity swimming pool with high-performance salt chlorinator (14 x 6m- 46 x 19,6ft ) with a maxi Jacuzzi.
The two cozy villas, named Frantoio and Leccino, are adjacent to the main house. Both have their own private patio and garden. Each villa is fully furnished and decorated with tasteful Umbrian touches, is approximately 60 sq mt (540 sq. ft.) and has a large living room with SKY satellite TV and WI-FI access, a well equipped kitchen corner and fireplace, plus a large bedroom with king-size bed and a comfortable, modern bathroom with shower. Linens, pool towels, hair dryer, kettle, cooking pots and pans, dish washer, microwave oven, CD player, washing machine, cellular phone, and final cleaning are all furnished to render your vacation complete. Pets are permitted on request.
When in season, guests may take advantage of free produce (fruit, tomatoes, greens) from the vegetable garden.
All guests are personally welcomed by the owners and will receive personal attention and care during their stay. Everything possible will be done to assure an unforgettable holiday.
A library of English language books is provided in each villa. You can browse the selection of art books, guides, maps, brochures and tourist information about the wonderful places to visit in the area.
The estate is located 1 km from the walled village of Paciano, a perfectly restored 13th century medieval village located in a peaceful and scenic location. There is a view of Lake Trasimeno and the lights of Chiusi, Montepulciano and Cortona in the distance.
The town is constructed on the peak of a hill 400 meters above sea level. In 1992, the European Community named Paciano un villaggio ideale. It is known as one of the top ten villages in Italy for its idyllic setting and quality of life. The restaurants of the area serve typical cuisine representative of the rich Umbrian and Tuscan enogastronomic culture and tradition.
Less than a one hour drive from Fontanaro, you can explore and enjoy Assisi, Perugia, Siena, Deruta, Montalcino, Montepulciano, Orvieto, Pienza, Cortona, Montefalco, Chiusi and a host of Etruscan architectural gems in Umbria and Tuscany.
From Chiusi, a one hour train trip brings you to the center of Rome or Florence. Trains leave in the morning and return in the evening providing a convenient way to visit these splendid cities without having to navigate the narrow streets and heavy traffic by car.

Life at Casa Rondini - Umbria, Italy
We stayed at this lovely example of agriturismo in Umbia, Italy this June, 2012 for two weeks. Bozena and Franco couldn't be more friendly or helpful hosts, making our stay a great Italian experience. There are also nights of fun making pizza, pasta, and luscious dishes featuring saffron, which they grow themselves in an atmosphere of fun with your fellow guests. The farm offers lots of fresh produce to pick yourself and Bozena jars jams, sauce, makes fresh pasta, etc. Fresh eggs from the farm's chickens are available daily. And, Franco makes the best Lemoncello. The pool is a great place to relax and the location of the villa is convenient for driving to many of Central Italy's hill towns and a manageable train ride to Florence and Rome. We're so glad we found Casa Rondini.

Assisi's Landscape, Assisi, Umbria, Italy, Europe
Assisi is a town and comune of Italy in the province of Perugia in the Umbria region, on the western flank of Monte Subasio. It was the birthplace of St. Francis, who founded the Franciscan religious order in the town in 1208, and St. Clare (Chiara d'Offreducci), the founder of the Poor Sisters, which later became the Order of Poor Clares after her death. The 19th-century Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows was also born in Assisi. Around 1000 BC a wave of immigrants settled in the upper Tiber valley as far as the Adriatic Sea, and also in the neighborhood of Assisi. These were the Umbrians, living in small fortified settlements on high ground. From 450 BC these settlements were gradually taken over by the Etruscans. The Romans took control of central Italy by the Battle of Sentinum in 295 BC. They built the flourishing municipium Asisium on a series of terraces on Monte Subasio. Roman remains can still be found in Assisi: city walls, the forum (now Piazza del Comune), a theatre, an amphitheatre and the Temple of Minerva (now transformed into the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva). In 1997, the remains of a Roman villa were also discovered containing several well preserved rooms with frescoes and mosaics in a condition rarely found outside sites such as Pompei. In 238 AD Assisi was converted to Christianity by bishop Rufino, who was martyred at Costano. According to tradition, his remains rest in the Cathedral Church of San Rufino in Assisi. The Ostrogoths of king Totila destroyed most of the town in 545. Assisi then came under the rule of the Lombards as part of the Lombard and then Frankish Duchy of Spoleto. The thriving commune became an independent Ghibelline commune in the 11th century. Constantly struggling with the Guelph Perugia, it was during one of those battles, the battle at Ponte San Giovanni, that Francesco di Bernardone, (Saint Francis of Assisi), was taken prisoner, setting in motion the events that eventually led him to live as a beggar, renounce the world and establish the Order of Friars Minor. The city, which had remained within the confines of the Roman walls, began to expand outside these walls in the 13th century. In this period the city was under papal jurisdiction. The Rocca Maggiore, the imperial fortress on top of the hill above the city, which had been plundered by the people in 1189, was rebuilt in 1367 on orders of the papal legate, cardinal Gil de Albornoz. In the beginning Assisi fell under the rule of Perugia and later under several despots, such as the soldier of fortune Biordo Michelotti, Gian Galeazzo Visconti and his successor Francesco I Sforza, dukes of Milan, Jacopo Piccinino and Federico II da Montefeltro, lord of Urbino. The city went into a deep decline through the plague of the Black Death in 1348. The city came again under papal jurisdiction under the rule of Pope Pius II (1458 - 1464). In 1569 construction was started of the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. During the Renaissance and in later centuries, the city continued to develop peacefully, as the 17th-century palazzi of the Bernabei and Giacobetti attest. Now the site of many a pilgrimage, Assisi is linked in legend with its native son, St. Francis. The gentle saint founded the Franciscan order and shares honors with St. Catherine of Siena as the patron saint of Italy. He is remembered by many, even non-Christians, as a lover of nature (his preaching to an audience of birds is one of the legends of his life). Assisi was hit by two devastating earthquakes, that shook Umbria in September 1997. But the recovery and restoration have been remarkable, although much remains to be done. Massive damage was caused to many historical sites, but the major attraction, the Basilica di San Francesco, reopened less than 2 years later.

Spoleto, Italy - A Quick Peek
Culture Discovery Vacations - A cooking and culinary tour company based in Soriano nel Cimino, Italy. Spoleto (About 40 minutes from Soriano) is one of the popular destinations on our cooking and culinary tours from Soriano nel Cimino, Italy.
Spoleto is one of the more beautiful cities in Umbria, but it is best known for its Jazz festival. The city dates back to the fifth century BC, and its vast history can still be seen at every corner. Some of the more interesting sights in Spoleto are the massive 14th century Rocca Albornoziana (The Albornozian Castle), which is full of beautiful frescoes and the 12th century cathedral (Duomo), both of which are shown in the video.
Interesting sights in Spoleto that are not shown in the video include: The Ancient Roman theater, the 1st century Ponte Sanguinario (The bloody bridge), Ponte delle Torri (the 13th century aqueduct), the 16th century Palazzo Racani-Anoni, the 14th century Palazzo della Signoria, and much more.
Many of our DiscoverSoriano.com itineraries feature a visit to this magnificent town, but for those that wish to go on their own, it can be found in the Perugia Province of Umbria, Italy; about 15 miles north of Terni, or about 75 miles north of Rome. It is about 30 miles north of our home base, Soriano nel Cimino.

Our Life In Film - Two Magical Weeks in Umbria
Have you ever been on a holiday before where you find yourself gazing into estate agent windows, dreaming of buying your own place in the neighbourhood? That's how I felt in Umbria. It isn't the first time I've been to Italy by any means (it has been my favourite place in the world for a very long time) - but this little corner of Umbria has quite literally stolen my heart. We know we will be heading back soon - and this time, it'll be for longer. We've only been gone a week and I already miss the sunshine, the prosecco, the hilltop towns, the rolling hills, the fields of sunflowers, the authentic pizzas, and the stunning sunsets so much. I hope you enjoy watching this video, which sums up our holiday in just over three minutes - and I'll be back vlogging again soon.
