Bhaktapur - Nepal | JOEJOURNEYS
Bhaktapur is an ancient city and is renowned for its elegant art, fabulous culture, colorful festivals, traditional dances and indigenous lifestyle of Newari community.
Bhaktapur is known variously as City of Culture, Living Heritage, Nepal’s Cultural Gem, An open museum and a City of Devotees.
It is just 12 kilometers east of Kathmandu, but gives the feeling of prehistoric times given the ambiance of traditional homes, lifestyles and environment. The conch shaped historic city is spreading over just an area of 6.88 square kilometer at 1,401 meter altitude. The city was founded in 12th century by King Anand Dev Malla. Bhaktapur was the capital city of the Greater Malla Kingdom in the Kathmandu Valley till the 15th century AD. The many of Bhaktapur‘s greatest monuments were built by the then Malla rulers.
Bhaktapur has more temples per square foot than Patan or Kathmandu and is far enough out of town to keep the crowds away. Unfortunately, the city has been severely damaged by the 7.9 Magnitude Earthquake on 25th of April, 2015 whose epicenter was about 90 kms NW of Bhaktapur. Many buildings and historical temples, including some in the Bhaktapur Durbar Square collapsed.

Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur are the symbolic places of the culture of Nepal. The earthquake in 2015, has not only left a harvest of blood. It also has wiped out a collection of temples and artworks of great value, little known in the West. It has virtually wiped out entire villages. The temples of Bhaktapur, Unesco heritage, one of the symbolic places of the Nepali culture, have become mountains of earth and stones. Bhaktapur, one of the best preserved ancient cities in the country, it is believed that half of the houses have been destroyed and 80% of the temples, as recorded by the BBC. The historical importance of the cultural heritage of Nepal is something that few people know. Pagodas, for example, are staggered temples greatly inspired the Chinese art; therefore, its relevance is fundamental to Asian art. Now is not much, and it will take time until we can again enjoy such beauty, a World Heritage Site
Located 13 kilometers east of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur is a city that has remained more or less unchanged over the past 300 years. It is a place where time has stopped in their crafts and traditions. Bhaktapur is one of the best managed cities, with very little traffic and pollution. Walking through the ancient streets, remember the pride and prestige of the past. It is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Visitors to Bhaktapur Durbar Square are required to pay an entrance fee, which is used by the Bhaktapur Development Committee for the preservation and maintenance of the Durbar Square. Once inside, however, you will find that this place is not a museum (though there is one in the main square), but rather a living city that has not changed in hundreds of years - and probably sees no reason to do so for another hundred. The city has its origins in the 12th century during the reign of King Ananda Malla of the Malla dynasty, which in real terms is about 800 years old. The city is populated mainly by people Newari, an ethnic group ... The day of our visit a school party was being held. Some photos were taken from the restaurant located in the Plaza Durbar Square - Visit in March 2014 -

Went out to explore UNESCO World Heritage Sites in KTM, gave a brief visit to a self-taught artist Lok Chitrakar who has been practicing Paubha for over forty years and tried my first laphing. It was so freakin bomb !!! wait let me rephrase that again, it was one of THE BEST food I had during my stay.

Bhaktapur Durbar Squara(museum of medieval art and architecture) and Muhan Pokhari Visit..
Bhaktapur Durbar Square the city is also known, is a museum of medieval art and architecture with many examples of sculpture, woodcarving and colossal pagoda temples consecrated to different gods and goddesses which is 15 km far from Kathmandu. It is a conglomeration of pagoda and shikhara-style temples grouped around a fifty-five window palace of brick and wood. The square is one of the most charming architectural showpieces of the Valley as it highlights the ancient arts of Nepal. The golden effigies of kings perched on the top of stone monoliths, the guardian deities looking out from their sanctuaries, the wood carvings in every place-struts, lintels, uprights, tympanums, gateways and windows-all seem to form a well-orchestrated symphony. Pottery and weaving are its major traditional industries.
Muhan Pokhari is located 15 Km away from koteshwor towards Nagarkot route. It is water dam for supply of drinking water but during rainy season water over flows its dam of about 2 m and constructed waterfall is seen at the source taking series of leap which creates perfect background for clicking photos, videos and enjoying scenic beauty.
