Landmannalaugar Highland Iceland
Part-11 Hólmur Kirkjubæjaklaustur
Landmannalaugar (Icelandic, meaning the people's pools) is a region near the volcano Hekla in southern section of Iceland's highlands.
The Landmannalaugar area is a popular tourist destination and hiking hub in Iceland's highlands. The area displays a number of unusual geological elements, like the multicolored rhyolite mountains and expansive lava fields, not far from the service center. The many mountains in the surrounding area display a wide spectrum of colors including pink, brown, green, yellow, blue, purple, black, and white. Two of the most popular mountains among hikers are Bláhnúkur (meaning blue peak) and Brennisteinsalda (meaning sulphur wave).
Landmannaluagar is a popular tourist destination. Tourists visit the area from June through late September, after which time the road is closed. A mountain lodge, in operation since 1951, can accommodate 78 people and has basic amenities. It is located centrally near natural geothermal hot springs, also popular with tourists.
Two routes lead to Landmannalaugar and one of them is accessible by regular car, though the road is rough (stones the size of fists are not uncommon). The easiest route to Landmannalaugar is to take either Rd. 30 from the mainroad and change into 32, cross the Sultartangi hydro-electric dam, going onto 26, then F208 and just before arriving in Landmannalaugar, making a right turn to F224. Road 26 can also be accessed directly from Rd. 1 just before arriving in the small village of Hella, crossing through typical Icelandic farmlands.
Icelandic horse riding is also available in the area. The horse riding trips visit places which can often be difficult to access on foot and not accessible by car as there are no official roads, as an example into Jökulgil (Glacier Valley).
From late June and through the summer, a couple from the Westfjords come and serve food and coffee to travelers in their green bus-shop, Fjallafang, as well as selling other things useful to travelers.
Landmannalaugar is the usual starting point for a four day long hiking trail aptly called Laugavegur, as the main shopping street in Reykjavík city center is called the same and is referred to the herds of people that walk the trail every day. The name actually means The Landmannalaugar Trail, Laugar being a shortened version for Landmannalaugar. The usual four day trail ends in Þórsmörk National Park, but one or two days can be added, trekking then all the way to Skógar nearly at the coast via Fimmvörðuháls between the two glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull.

Brennisteinsalda (view from the top), Landmannalaugar, South Iceland
Brennisteinsalda is a 855m high volcanic peak, close to the Landmannalaugar huts. The region is extremely beautiful and volcanic. Brennisteinsalda is perhaps the most colorful mountain in Iceland. You can see yellow, pink, blue, reds, white, green and black colors in different places. This is due to the rich chemical composition of the rhyolitic rocks. The lava field around the mountain was created from an eruption in 1477, but it still steams. The hike to Brennisteinsalda takes about 45min each way and is easy, except the last part up which can be very slipery and difficult if wet. From the top the views are fantastic, you can see the colorful rhyolite mountains around, the black Blahnukur mountain in front to the northeast, and Mt Hekla to the east (another black mountain that appears at the end of the video, at distance). The top is flat and yellow. When you go down the mountain, you can also see the nice colorful mountains to the South. At Landmannalaugar there is a natural hot pool, that you should not miss the change to dip into!
Blahnukur (view from the top), Landmannalaugar, South Iceland
Blahnukur is a 943m high volcanic peak, next to the Landmannalaugar huts. The region is extremely beautiful, due to the colorful rhyolitic mountains. The Blahnukur (blue mountain) is however only dark green and black. From the top the views are amazing and to far away. The colorful Brennisteinsalda volcano is observed to the South. Behind Brennisteinsalda, one can also see the Hfarnisnusker volcanic peak (the black mountain in the distance covered by clouds). This where the famous Laugavegur trail goes, about 3h walking time away (there is another hut there). In the video you also see Brennisteinsalda lava field, which spreads to the West, where you can see the Landmannalaugar huts and the Veidovotn lakes to the North. When the weather is good, you can also see the bright icecap of Hofsjokull behind the Veidivotn lakes. Not shown in the video is the equally beautiful view over the Jokulgil colorful canyon to the East and the Vatnajokull glacier in the distance. The hike takes about 1.5h up, and 45min down. The trail to the top is over volcanic sand so it can be very muddy if wet. The way down that you see in the video is quite steep and slipery. There are beautiful canyons at each side at the foot of Blahnukur, worth visiting.

Leaving Reykjanes, the road turns east towards the cliffs at Staðarberg. As it passes one of the region¹s many salmon farms, a narrow path forks off to the right towards the shore and Brimketill, a strange formation of rock and sea well worth a visit.

Laugavegur trail : Brennisteinsalda volcano, Landmannalaugar, Iceland
A Icelandic nature near Brennisteinsalda volcano.
The Brennisteinsalda is a volcano in the south of Iceland. Its height is about 855 m. It is situated near Landmannalaugar and not far from Hekla. The name means in English: sulphur wave. It comes from the sulphur spots which have coloured its sides. But there are other colours, too: green from mosses, black and blue from lava and ashes, red from iron in the earth. It could very well be the most colourful mountain of Iceland and so its picture is often found in books and calendars. The mountain is still visibly an active volcano with hot sulphur springs and vapour at its sides. The hiking trail Laugavegur passes by. In front of it there is an obsidian lava field. [wikipedia]

Landmannalagur - Highlands of Iceland 4K
Landmannalaugar ('People's Pools') - also called Rainbow Mountains is a vast area of stunning and unique beauty in the heart of Iceland's southern Highlands in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve. Landmannalaugar is at the edge of Laugahraun lava field, which was formed in an eruption around the year 1477. It is known for its natural geothermal hot springs and surrounding landscape.
Landmannalaugar is a natural phenomenon that never ceases to amaze! The colours in the landscape are simply incredible with lava, sand and stone of all colours and kinds! Summer or winter, Landmannalaugar is one of the most beautiful regions in the country. Its rugged landscape, magnificent colours, bubbling hot springs and clear rivers are prevalent throughout, giving the area its own unique and highly captivating character.
This area is accessible only couple of months per year, thus a tour is usually required to reach this place. This video was shot entirely on a day tour with Southcoast Adventure -

This is an area in the south-western part of Iceland called Landmannalaugar; sorry for the noise, the wind was crazy, and the quality of the camera quite bad... but this is an amazing country, that's because I decide to move here..and after 1 year and 7 months I'm still here.

Part-8 Langisjór Highland
Ingolfshofdi Puffin island on south coast of Iceland close to Vatnajökul glacier
Ingólfshöfði nature reserve (1978) is a 76 m. high headland situated between black sands of south-east Iceland and the Atlantic ocean. In the headland you find everything from steep cliffs and rocks to black sands and green grass. In the summertime it's a home to thousands of puffins and other nesting seabirds. Ingólfshöfði got its name from the first official settler of Iceland, Ingólfur Arnarson, but the story says that he spent his first winter in Iceland over there in 874 AD. The cape is only accessible for 4WD vehicles and due to possible quicksand, it's not recommended to travel there without guidance.
