South Wales Uilleann Pipers session in The Llanover Arms, Pontypridd
A short clip of our post-concert Friday night session at The Llanover Arms in Pontypridd.
Cardiff Morris dance Black Joke at the Llanover Arms, Pontypridd. 26th June, 2012.
'Black Comedy' is the title of a play by Peter Shaffer first performed in 1965.
The play is so called because much of the action occurs while the characters are in a building suffering a blackout. Onstage the blackout is represented by the stage being illuminated in full-light. Every time a character emerges bearing a torch or a candle the stage lights go down a bit.
One of the actors in a 1967 performance of the play was Michael Crawford, it was his Broadway debut. He was more greatly acclaimed for his later role as the clumsy and shy Frank Spencer in the British sitcom Some Mothers Do 'ave 'em.
Much later Michael Crawford was asked to perform the role of the suave and confident Phantom in the musical Phantom of the Opera.
In the Terry Pratchett novel 'Masqerade' the character Walter Plinge is a clumsy and shy character who is revealed to have a hidden side to his character that is the confident and suave 'Phantom' in the novel. Some people see parallels between the character changes and the changes in roles by the actor.
Interestingl the character name Walter Plinge is used by West End actors as a pseudonym if a part has not been cast, an actor is playing two parts, or an actor does not want his or her name in the programme.
