Beautifully sited in the Vale of Ewyas the Augustinian priory goes back to the early 12th century, and was the first in Wales. By the early 13th century the priory had become one of the great medieval buildings in Wales until it gradually fell into ruin following the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

Creepy Places Global: Tintern Abbey
Facebook:
Website:
Charles and Andrew travel to Tintern Abbey, a ruin Cistercian abbey located in the village of Tintern in Monmothsire, Wales. Established in 1131 on the banks of the River Wye, it was the first Cistercian foundation in Wales. Tintern Abbey was founded by Walter de Clare, an Anglo-Norman nobleman. It hosted King Edward II in 1326, was financial effected by the Black Death and the Welsh revolt, and was shut down by Henry VIII during the Dissolutions of the Monasteries. The building was granted to Henry Somerset, 2nd Earl of Worcester, , and soon after the building went into decay. Interests by tourists for the location began around the mid-18th century, the location inspired many artists, with the location became featured in many paintings, prints, and poems throughout the years. In 1901, the Abbey was bought by the crown from the Duke of Beaufort for £15,000. Due to the sites’ historic significance and popularity, the abbey was recognized as a monument of national importance and maintenance works on it began. The ruins also has some spooky legends and reported hauntings surrounding it.
