The Cordillera Vilcanota is an impressive range of mountains which include the massive Salkantay snow capped mountain (6,271m) and three others over 6000m. Salkantay is an outstanding snow peak, located less than fifty miles northwest of the city of Cuzco in south central Peru. It is the highest mountain of the Cordillera Vilcabamba. Because of its proximity to the city, it is easily accessible and is climbed frequently.
Salkantay Trek is totally different than the others, it's not dirty, nor popular, so therefore it's not full of tourists going on this trek you may see distinct ecosystems spread across its different zones of altitude and climate. This trail runs from high valley up to the mountains and descends into a lush valley. The ecosystem is transformed rapidly

Llactapata
Our guide Valerio describes the ruins of Llactapata along the Inca Trail in Peru.
Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu // Peru
The Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu I took was a 5 day trek from October 1st to 5th, 2015. I hiked with the great local trekking company called Refugios Salkantay who are really a team of families living along the Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu.
Day 1: Cusco – Mollepata - Soray Pampa – Laguna Tukarway
On the first day you will be picked up from your hotel at 6:30am and taken by van to the town of Mollepata about two and a half hours away. Breakfasts and last minute things you might need on your trek (headlamp, sunblock, insect repellent, sandals, chocolates, hats for sun and cold, wool gloves, plastic ponchos for rain, etc.) are sold. We will continue on from Mollepata in our truck to Challacancha and from there walk for two hours to our Refuge at Soray Pampa, where you will have a Coca tea upon arrival. While awaiting lunch you can enjoy the scenic balconies and all the comforts of our rooms (matrimonial, doubles, triples, hot showers). For lunch we prepare local style dishes and vegetarian foods.
After lunch we can go on a hike up to a glacial lagoon at the foot of Nevado Humantay. It takes 3 hours roundtrip and will help to acclimatize for the hike the next day. Back at the Refuge you will have an appetizer waiting for you and a delicious dinner afterward.
Day 2: Soray Pampa – Salkantay Pass – Huayracmachay – Chalway
Today is the big day, at 5am you will be woken with a coca tea, and at 5:30am breakfast prepared by one of our family, probably our father Marino. He will give you a box lunch, a snack, a chocolate and a bottle of water. These and your personal things will be carried by horse so you may enjoy the hike easier.
The first hour is an easy approach, with excellent views of the great Nevado Salkantay, second highest in the Cusco region. From there the trail steepens into the seven switch backs and goes past a small lagoon on the way up to the pass at 4,640m / 15,255ft. The 7.5km hike up takes three to four hours. At the pass your companion with the horse will give you a tea and your things so you may carry on.
After two hours going down from the pass you will arrive at Huayracmachay. Here the family of Pedro Espinoza will give you a roofed picnic table to eat your lunch and a tea or coffee.
In the afternoon we will enter in the higher part of the amazon jungle, the “cloud forest” climatic zone. A gradual downhill hike of 10km / 6.2 miles on an easy trail makes this a pleasant afternoon going through the lush native plants in the valley, at the end of the active day you arrive to the Refuge Chalway (2,900m / 9,514ft). Dinner to take care of the appetite you got while trekking.
Day 3: Chalway – Thermal Baths – La playa Lucmabamba
The local family in Chalway will prepare your breakfast for you to leave at around 7am. After about 40 minutes there are thermal baths that you may visit, the cost is 5 soles. The rest of the trail is a gradual decent passing through small waterfalls and a grand variety of orchids and other flora different from the day before. After a few hours you arrive at Playa to have lunch, another hour more and you arrive to the Refuge Lucmabamba, which is located among coffee farms. The surrounding area produces passion fruit, papaya, oranges, avocadoes, yucca and other produce. Here you can see how the locals plant, harvest, toast, grind and drink their coffee.
Day 4: Lucmabamba – Llactapata – Hidroelectric – Aguas Calientes
Breakfast, then the local family will show you an easy trail to follow and you will be able to enjoy the Inca trail that leads to Inca Llaqtapata. This archaeological zone is up on a mountain ridge where you can see Machu Picchu across the valley. The hike up to the site takes two hours, the hike down the other side to the hydroelectric train station is also another two hours. At Hydroelectric you can get food/drinks at one of the restaurants, or continue on along the railroad tracks to Aguas Calientes another three hours. The town of Aguas Calientes at the foot of Machu Picchu has plenty of hotels and restaurants to choose from. If you do not already have your entrance ticket for Machu Picchu you can buy it at the office on the side of the plaza de armas from 5am to 8pm. The people that want to go to Huayna Picchu need to buy it in advance sometimes up to a month during high season. Montaña Machu Picchu is less popular and you can usually get a ticket the day before.
Day 5: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Ollantaytambo – Cusco
You can visit Machu Picchu starting at 6am when the gates open. The first busses to the site leave Aguas Calientes at 5:30am, the bus costs $24 round trip. The hike up to Machu Picchu takes an hour and a half. You can explore and enjoy the sacred site for the day until 5pm. After going back to Aguas Calientes you can take your train to Ollantaytambo and then go by car to Cusco.
20160728j Salkantay Trek Day 3 Sahuayaku, Lucamabamba Coffee Farm, Inca Trail, Llactapata GOPR0055
After a delicious breakfast, you will get started on your shortest, but most interesting day. You will experience the most beautiful sights along your trekking route to Machu Picchu. You will explore the tropical forest and have a visit at an organic coffee farm, where you will be able to taste the coffee, prepared by the local people. Coffee is the main farming industry for the local people. They farm big hectares of coffee to export to the United States, Asia and Europe. Coffee was first discovered in Ethiopia, but it wasn't until the Spanish invaded Cusco, that it was brought to this region. You will also explore some orange and avocado farms. When you are finished, you will get the opportunity to climb part of the Inca trail for two and a half hours. You will see amazing views of the Santa Teresa valley, until you arrive at the Llactapata Inca site, right in front of Machu Picchu. This will be the first site you see, of the Lost City of the Incas. You will be able to see the Machu Picchu ruins, Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu mountain from this spot. You will explore and learn about the Inca site with your tour guide. There will be plenty of time to take photos. It will then be 15 minutes downhill, to your lunch and campsite area. This campsite is owned by a local family, and only Alpaca Expeditions has permission to stay there. This is a great place to enjoy the sunset and sunrise over Machu Picchu. After lunch, you will have some free time to enjoy the views and relax from the hiking. Again, we will serve a lovely happy hour, with tea and coffee, and your chef will prepare a delicious meal for dinner. Once the stars come out, you can enjoy the Milky Way and the Inca constellations. This is where Incan astronomers studied the sky to predict the weather.
