On the fossil-rich Jurassic Coast is pebbly Chesil Beach. A causeway leads to Portland Island with its lighthouse and birdlife.
Weymouth is a seaside town in Dorset, England, situated on a sheltered bay at the mouth of the River Wey on the English Channel coast. The town of Weymouth is 11 kilometres (7 mi) south of Dorchester and 8 kilometres (5 mi) north of the Isle of Portland. The town's population is 52,323 (2011). The town is the third largest settlement in Dorset after the unitary authorities of Bournemouth and Poole.
Weymouth is a tourist resort, and its economy depends on its harbour and visitor attractions; the town is a gateway situated halfway along the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site on the Dorset and east Devon coast, important for its geology and landforms. Weymouth Harbour has included cross-channel ferries, and is home to pleasure boats and private yachts, and nearby Portland Harbour is home to the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, where the sailing events of the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games were held.
The A354 road bridge connects Weymouth to Portland, which together form the borough of Weymouth and Portland. The history of the borough stretches back to the 12th century; including involvement in the spread of the Black Death, the settlement of the Americas, the development of Georgian architecture, and preparations for World War II.

Seaside cafe serves UK's 'best fish and chips'
(7 Sep 2018) LEADIN:
A fish and chip shop in a small coastal village in the north east of Scotland has been named as the United Kingdom's top food experience by the travel guide, Lonely Planet.
The owner says the secret is using top quality, fresh fish.
STORYLINE :
The taste of freshly caught haddock fried in a crispy home made batter with chips on the side is drawing crowds from far and wide to a small seaside village in the north east of Scotland.
The Bay in the town of Stonehaven has been an institution for locals since it opened in 2006 but now an accolade awarded to the restaurant by a leading travel guide has propelled the business into the spotlight, drawing guests from around the world.
The fish is bought fresh from the Peterhead Fish Market at the crack of dawn, where Danny Couper, the owner of Coupers, a fish wholesaler, buys only the best fish for The Bay.
Just looking for good quality to make sure it meets our customers' requirements in general, says Couper. It is a good quality market, but you still have to be careful that you buy the youngest of the catch to make sure that you are getting the product that your require.
Just look at the quality here. If the gills are red it is a good quality fish, Couper says, pointing out what he looks for in a good fish. If the eyes are bright... this is an average...this is quite an average fish this one.
Couper, who has to work fast to get a good price for the best fish, places his company's blue tags on the products he is bidding for in the frenetic early morning market.
We bought some MSC (The Marine Stewardship Council/ certified sustainable seafood) haddock at the first boat for The Bay and they will be getting processed today and tomorrow, Couper says of The Bay's insistence that all its fish be sustainable, meaning is must be caught in areas where the fish are reproducing.
It's about leaving enough fish in the ocean and respecting their habitats, says Couper.
Calum Richardson, who started the The Bay Fish & Chips in 2006, believes his company's emphasis on quality and service is what sets it apart.
I think what makes a good fish and chip shop is pride, care, Richardson says. You have go to enjoy it. You know I love food and drink. It is what I love doing. If I am not in here it is what I do...I go around trying things - not necessarily fish and chips. But, I think you've got to have pride and take care in what you do.
Richardson prepares his own simple batter with flour, water and bicarbonate of soda. You can tell a good fish and chips from the batter, he says. An expensive fish should never be hidden behind thick, greasy batter.
Keep the batter thin so you can taste the fish, says Richardson. Because if you are buying expensive fish that is nice and fresh you don't want to hide it with thick horrible batter and we use high oleic sunflower oil, which is part of the protein from sunflower, which is a healthy...a healthy oil. But, it means that we can cater for everyone. And again it is very light in flavour, so it's let flavour of the produce sing. So, you can taste the fish, you can taste the batter and you can taste the chips.
Richardson sources the majority of his products locally, including his potatoes, known as tatties in Scotland, and vegetables.
Pernille Søholm, a customer from Denmark, says she has become something of an expert on the cuisine while she has been living in the United Kingdom, but that nothing comes close to The Bay.
It's local fish, so yeah...it's good, Adam says.

Fish and chips – sometimes written fish 'n' chips – which originated in the United Kingdom,
has been the traditional British takeaway food and still a classic choice for many a time. As you know it consists of deep fried fish (traditionally cod or haddock) in batter with deep fried chipped potatoes.
Popular tradition associates the dish with the United Kingdom and fish and chips remains very popular here and in areas colonised by the people from the UK in the 19th century, such as Australia,
New Zealand, and parts of North America (New England and Pacific Northwest and Canada generally).
Fish and chips also have considerable popularity in the Republic of Ireland and South Africa. The dish is even popular in China with the first shop opened in Beijing in 2004, and it has become very popular in providing a fresh change to Chinese cuisine.
Now that we are more health conscious we try to eat healthily, so let us tell you three facts:
Fish and chips fact 1 – fish and chips have less fat per 100g than pizza, burger (big Mac) with medium fries, dona kebab or chicken korma.
Fish and chips fact 2 – fish and chips have fewer calories in an average portion than pizza, burger (big Mac) with medium fries, dona kebab whooper meal or chicken korma.
Fish and chips fact 3 – fish and chips contains carbohydrate, vitamin C, protein, iron, calcium, zinc and dietary fibre.
So, what are we suggesting? Eat healthily! It may be ok to have the odd pizza or kebab but you should be aiming to eat more healthily. Fish and Chip shops have always provided a well balanced option and it is not junk food; it really is anything but that. The figures speak for themselves.
Fish and chips contain no added salt (unless you add it yourself!), they are high in protein and are full of natural ingredients, so make the dish part of your nutritious balanced diet.
Our freshly cut chips have, much, much, (and, yes) much less fat than the frozen 'fries' you may find at a McDonalds or kebab shop. In a large 'fries' at McDonalds there is around 11.5g of fat, yes 11.5 grams compared to around 0.1g you will find at the traditional fish and chip shop.
So, fish and chips is definitely a healthy meal, and it definitely tastes nice, so what's stopping you? Try it for yourself!
The best fish and chip shops offer traditional fish and chips which includes a variety of fish such as Cod, Haddock, Plaice, Pollack (may be named Collin by the time you are reading this) and Huss (also known as Rock). they also offer scampi, fish cake and cod roe plus sausages and saveloys. We've added a few extra options to the menu which includes Jacket Potatoes, Chilli con Carne, Rice and Barbecued Chicken, all of which are cooked fresh at
they usually do bulk orders for any occasion whether you are getting together with a group of friends or colleagues, or perhaps stocktaking or having a private party, so if you are having a DO

Yeovil is a town and civil parish in south Somerset, England. The town of Yeovil lies within the local district of South Somerset and the Yeovil parliamentary constituency, situated at the southern boundary of Somerset, 130 miles (210 km) from London, 40 miles (64 km) south of Bristol and 30 miles (48 km) from Taunton.
In the 20th century it developed into a centre of the aircraft and defence industries, which made it a target for bombing in the Second World War, with one of the largest employers being Westland Aircraft. Additionally, the Fleet Air Arm has a station RNAS Yeovilton (HMS Heron), the primary base of the Royal Navy's Westland Wildcat and Westland EH101 helicopters, several miles north of the town and is a major local employer (Ministry of Defence). Several other manufacturing and retail companies also have bases in the town. Plans have been proposed for various regeneration projects in the town.
Yeovil Country Park, which includes Ninesprings, is one of several open spaces in the town. There are a range of educational, cultural and sporting facilities. Religious sites include the 14th-century Church of St John the Baptist. It is on the A30 and A37 roads and has two railway stations on two separate railway lines. Yeovil Pen Mill is on the Bristol to Weymouth line served by Great Western Railway services, whilst Yeovil Junction is on the London Waterloo to Exeter line served by South Western Railway. There is also a small railway museum.
Yeovil is situated at the southern boundary of Somerset, close to the border with Dorset, 130 miles (209 km) from London, 40 miles (64 km) south of Bristol and 30 miles (48 km) from Taunton. It lies in the centre of the Yeovil Scarplands, a major natural region of England. The suburbs include: Summerlands, Hollands, Houndstone, Preston Plucknett, Penn Mill, New Town, Hendford, Old Town, Forest Hill, Abbey Manor, Great Lyde. Outlying villages include East Coker, West Coker, Hardington, Evershot, Halstock, Stoford, Barwick, Sutton Bingham, Mudford and Yetminster. Other nearby villages include Bradford Abbas, Thornford Corscombe, Montacute (where one will find Montacute House), and Pendomer. The village of Brympton, now almost a suburb of Yeovil, contains the medieval manor of Brympton d'Evercy. Tintinhull is also a village close to Yeovil featuring the National Trust owned Tintinhull House and Gardens.
One of the symbols of Yeovil is Jack the Treacle Eater, a folly consisting of a small archway topped by a turret with a statue on top. This is actually located in the village of Barwick, just to the south of the town. The hamstone Abbey Farm House was built around 1420 by John Stourton II, known as Jenkyn, and the associated Abbey Barn dates from the same period.
Hendford Manor in the centre of the town was built around 1720 and has since been converted into offices. It is a Grade II* listed building. Newton Surmaville is a small park and house which is also known as Newton House. It was built between 1608 and 1612, for Robert Harbin, a Yeovil merchant. It has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building.
Yeovil has two theatres; The Octagon, and The Swan, a ten-screen cinema and 18-lane ten-pin bowling alley. Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides local health services. The Yeovil Railway Centre is a small railway museum at Yeovil Junction. It was created in 1993 in response to British Rail's decision to remove the turntable from Yeovil Junction. Approximately 0.25 miles (400 m) of track along the Clifton Maybank spur is used for demonstration trains.
The town has two railway stations on two separate railway lines. Yeovil Pen Mill is on the Bristol to Weymouth line served by Great Western Railway services, whilst Yeovil Junction is on the London Waterloo to Exeter line served by South Western Railway. Yeovil has bus services provided by First West of England, First Hampshire & Dorset, Nippy Bus, Nordcat , South West Coaches, Stagecoach South West and Damory Coaches along with coach services from National Express, Berry's Coaches and South West Tours.
