Day of defiance: Protest against contentious extradition bill in Hong Kong turns violent
Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here:
Protests against a contentious extradition bill turned violent in Hong Kong on June 12, 2019, as police used pepper spray and tear gas to disperse thousands of demonstrators from an area near the city's legislative complex.
Many of the protesters had spent the night near the Legislative Council building, and in the morning began to use metal barricades and bricks to build obstacles.
Riot police using shields and batons fired pepper spray and tear gas at demonstrators, who carried umbrellas and wore goggles and masks.
In the afternoon, Hong Kong Police Commissioner Stephen Lo Wai-chung declared the clashes to be a riot, raising serious implications for anyone arrested in connection with the demonstration.
The Legislative Council was forced to delay its planned second reading of the government bill.

Lo Wai-kwok: Inducing Students' Thirst for Knowledge
IR DR LO WAI-KWOK (in Cantonese): President, Hong Kong has been awarded the right to host the 57th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 2016 and I believe this event is worth our support. I would also like to make a declaration here, that I have been invited to be an honorary advisor of the Preparatory Committee.
President, the IMO is an international mathematical competition for pre-collegiate students, providing a platform for exchanges and learning among young mathematics elites from various parts of the world. The teams from Hong Kong have participated in the competitions since 1988, and they have won medals every year and made excellent achievements. Therefore, the basic spirit of the motion moved by Mrs Regina IP to support the hosting of this international mathematics competition is worthy of support.
In 1994, Hong Kong hosted the 35th IMO with the support and efforts of all parties. Hosting the IMO again allows participants from all parts of the world to witness that, after the reunification of Hong Kong with China and the implementation of one country, two systems, Hong Kong still has the ability and advantages for hosting international events. However, I note that there are divergent views, and those concerned are wondering if it is appropriate for the Legislative Council to ask the SAR Government to sponsor the event on behalf of an unofficial civil organization. Will this affect the independent autonomy that the civil organization should originally enjoy? Once this precedent is set, will there be more cases of following the example? I do not think these questions are unreasonable. Is it necessary for a Member's motion to discuss so many details? As I heard in the debates in the past, many Honourable colleagues had reservations about that.

How To Go [EASIER & FASTER] From SHENZHEN To HONG KONG
Passengers having passed customs can take an East Train (东铁) at Kowloon-Canton Company (九广铁路公司) to Hong Kong. The train runs through 14 stations, which are: Lo Wo Station (namely Luohu Station, 罗湖站), Sheung Shui Station (上水站), Fanling Station (粉岭站), Tai Wo Station (太和站), University Station (大学站), Fo Tan Station (火炭站), Sha Tin Station (沙田站), Tai Wai Station (大围站), Kowloon Tong Station (九龙塘站), Mong Kok Station (旺角站), Hung Hom Station (红磡站) and East Tsim Sha Tsui Station (尖东站).
Futian Port is located in Yufeng Road, Futian District (福田区裕丰路) and the service time is 06:30–24:00.
Passengers having passed customs can take the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line (香港地铁落马洲支线) direct to Hong Kong, such as Kowloon Tong (九龙塘), Mong Kok (旺角), Tsim Sha Tsui (尖沙咀), Causeway Bay (铜锣湾), Wanchai (湾仔) and Central (中环).
Passengers also can take a coach to Hong Kong in B1. For passengers want to go to Hong Kong International Airport: taking a coach to Yuen Long (元朗), getting off at Yuen Long Dongtou Village (元朗东头村), walking across the road, and then transfer to Airport Line E14.
The service time for Huanggang Port is 24 hours a day, and the length time for passing customs is less than 25 minutes. Passengers can take a bus at Huanggang Port to different places in Hong Kong, such as Wai Chai Pier, Jinshang Lu Rail Station, Hong Kong International Airport and Austin Road in Tsim Sha Tsui.
Huanggang Port (皇岗口岸) is popular with the locals, but unless you are familiar with the bus options or wish to use taxis, it is best to use one of the others, as there is no Shenzhen metro there. However, it is the only one open 24 hours a day.

Hong Kong in Limbo as Extradition Protests Crisis Deepens
Hong Kong's legislature suspended meetings Thursday as leaders considered their next steps following violent clashes between police and protesters opposed to a bill that would allow suspects to be tried in mainland Chinese courts.
Critics say the measure, now on hold, would undermine the city's cherished legal autonomy amid moves by Beijing to tighten its hold over the former British colony.
Police said they arrested 11 people on charges such as assaulting police officers and unlawful assembly. Police Commissioner Stephen Lo Wai-chung said 22 officers had been injured. Hospital officials said they treated 81 people for protest-related injuries.
