Memories of a great morning spent with Sang and his family at Lobong Cooking Class near Ubud in Bali. The food at the end was some of the best I've ever tasted. It was absolutely delicious.

#11 UBUD COOKING CLASS AND PALACE
We started the day with a walk up Monkey Forest Road to have a look around Ubud Palace. There are so many shops on the way and most are selling pretty much the same tourist souvenirs. We come to an alley and an artist was selling his paintings and drawings on the wall of the alley. We brought 3 hand drawn postcards from him.
At the end of Monkey Forest Road is the Palace. It was free entry and its a good job because its pretty small and not too much to see. We were done in 10 minutes.
We walked back down to a restaurant where we had booked to do a cooking class. We started by chopping the spices to make the Balinese spice paste which went into most of the dishes. We then used a giant pestle and mortar to grind it all together. It smelt fantastic.
We made several dishes throughout the lesson including one which used the stalk of a banana tree. It was actually really tasty.
Our favourite was the peanut sauce and the papaya salad but it was all very delicious. We were stuffed by the end of the course!
We love our food so we love to do a cooking class in most of the countries we visit if we can. Indonesian food is definitely a winner!

FOOD OF BALI, COOKING CLASS | Canggu Cooking Retreat Vlog | & Indonesian Food
Time for a Bali cooking class! In this vlog we make and eat some Balinese and Indonesian food with Canggu Cooking Retreat...⬇ Click 'Show More' ✈ Live in Bali full-time:
We can highly recommend taking a Bali cooking class, this was such an incredible afternoon cooking a bunch of Balinese and Indonesian food! If you're coming to Bali and want to try some great local food you should definitely consider taking a cooking school afternoon! We can highly recommend Canggu Cooking Retreat, these guys were awesome:
We haven't taken many cooking classes around the world, but considering our love for Bali and the Balinese culture and food we thought it was about time... it made for the best afternoon in Canggu. Not to mention the food, Indonesian food is incredible and the food we made in this vlog (although probably more Balinese) was better than any restaurant we've eaten at recently! That should be motivation enough if you're in Canggu or coming to Bali to book a class haha.

Balinese cooking class with Le Zat Beach Restaurant
Carmen and Dave from cooking up a storm at a Balinese cooking class with Le-Zat Beach Restaurant in Candi Dasa, East Bali.
From the blog:
Balinese food is delicious
When we told our friends back home that we were going to Bali, many of them gave us a long list of restaurants to eat at in Seminyak. Italian, French, Australian restaurants… but hang on a minute. We’re not going to Indonesia to eat foreign foods. We wanted to sample true Indonesian cuisine.
So what is Indonesian food like? In Bali, it’s tradition for families to live in what the Balinese term ‘compounds’. When a woman marries, she goes to live in her husband’s family compound. Here, she will join other branches of the family tree – her in-laws might live in the house next to her, and her husband’s brother’s family in the house on the other side.
All the relatives live in houses spread throughout the compound.
To feed all these people each day, the head female of each family, normally the wife, will cook a large pot of food in the morning. The family will eat from this pot for breakfast, lunch and dinner. So essentially you have the same meal three times a day.
Typical Balinese food consists of lots of rice, chicken, fresh vegetables and fish. And lots of spices to add flavour to the dishes. Oh and you can’t forget the delicious satay sticks and babi guling (suckling pig).
Choosing Le Zat to cook up a storm
We were relaxing at our hotel in East Bali – Nirwana Resort & Spa – when two women got dropped back at the resort, carrying dishes of food. The spicy smell wafted over to use, piercing our nostrils. Dave promptly asked, “Excuse me, where did you get that food?”
The two women raved about how they’d just spend five hours at a beach restaurant, learning how to cook some of the basic and most delicious Indonesian dishes. We were hooked. Two days later, we were off to Le Zat Restaurant to experience the cooking school for ourselves.
Cooking school kicks off
The day before our class, our chef Made popped in to our hotel to introduce himself. At first I thought it was perhaps because we were writing about the experience that gave us this extra special touch but it turns out he greets all the guests before they come.
He sat down with us to see if there was anything we didn’t eat or anything we were allergic too.
This special touch was impressive and once again emphasised the brilliant customer service Balinese people bring to whatever they do – and always with a smile.
On the day of our class, a shuttle took us to the school, which is housed on the beach adjacent to the Le Zat restaurant. Set under an awning, your cooking space is an old boat that has been converted into a kitchen. Perfect for the beach setting!

It was a beautiful sunny day for our cooking class and our chef Made showed us around the garden at Lezat Beach Restaurant. Many of the herbs we saw we would be cooking with.
We got into chef mode by donning a headscarf, apron and flower for that added chef sparkle.
First on the menu was fried spring rolls, or lumpia goreng as they’re known in Bali.
We chopped the vegetables finely, added this delicious smelling ginger, mixed in a good pinch of salt and gave it a stir. Then we wrapped the rolls up with a dash of egg yolk, ready to be fried.
Yum!
Next up was steamed chicken, which is cooked wrapped up in a banana leaf. We chopped the chicken and added sambal, which is a spicy Balinese paste, a dash of coconut milk and some spring onion.
Then Made showed us how to carefully wrap the chicken into the banana leaves so that they were ready to be steamed.
We placed them into the steamer and hey presto – 20 minutes later the delicious chicken was ready to eat.
Divine.
We then got cracking on our minced fish skewers by chopping up the fish finely and adding chilli, palm sugar, shrimp paste and coconut milk before giving it a good stir and zapping it in the blender.
We wrapped them onto our skewers and placed them over the coal fire to cook.
Fishy goodness!
Then we started cooking one of my favourite Balinese dishes – gado gado.
Grinding down garlic, shrimp paste, shallots and chilli in a mortar and pestle, we added some water. We diced some glutinous rice and added it to the paste with bean sprouts and green beans, before mixing it and added peanuts.
Voila!
To top off the meal, we made our own batter for deep fried pineapple slices.
The juicy sweetness with the crunch of the batter was the perfect way to finish our five course cooking class!

Best Cooking Class in Bali! Learning to Cook Tasty Balinese Food
Luck was on our side when we found a Balinese cooking class in Lovina Beach, Bali. For $75, Ketut, a local chef and all around great guy, took us to the local market, taught us how to barter, and then we cooked 5 dishes back as his restaurant. Also shout out to this new gopro mount it was super helpful for being discreet in the market!
The market was full of new sounds, smells, and sites and we found ourselves a bit lost and overwhelmed by it all. Of course, we know we are traveling right when we feel completely out of our element! :) Ketut taught us how to shop at the market. You make your first rounds, get a price, and then walk away, its too much. Then you come back around later on and ask again until they get to a price that you like. Also, we found out that at these early morning markets, the closer you can get to 9:00am the better as the market is getting ready to close and you can get the best deals.
We tasted many new produce and snacks and learned so much about the culture of Bali and Indonesia simply by being where the locals were. The market was truly a special and unique experience and we were thrilled to have found this opportunity.
After the market, we were greeted back at the restaurant by a pack of adorable and mischievous kittens. Attacking our toes and getting into all sorts of trouble, our new little hosts did their best to entertain us throughout the class.
We had heard that Ubud cooking classes were the best but we now have to disagree. We could not imagine this experience being any more authentic, real, enjoyable, and exciting. Ketut made the entire day a dream and we were honored to have such an incredible chef teach us (novices) how to cook this delicious Indonesian food.
Using kitchen tools dating back generations, Ketut patiently took us through the motions of creating a beautiful 5 course meal. As you will see, we were not vegan at the time and i can not wait to go back one day and get this lesson again but this time vegan. As a side note, we went vegan right after we got back from Bali - but thats another story for another time.
After the long and exciting day, my body was ready for a break. Whether from heat and dehydration or just my body adjusting to Bali, i struggled a bit to not feel dizzy and a little sick. I drank as much water as i possibly could and waited for the hardy meal to sink in to my system.
This day was so wonderful and we are so grateful for Ketut for taking us with him and showing us this experience. To find out more, check out their website:
