Shili Beach (Penghu, Taiwan)
This is a very quiet swimming beach in Shíli which sits on the Fongguei Peninsula, it’s also about 15 minutes from the city. However, be careful with banana boats etc in the area as you might end up far enough from shore and need to be rescued by boat!
Magong Airport in Penghu recognized as challenging place to land
Magung Airport, where the crash occurred, has been a boon to Penghu’s tourism sector. But experts say that its geographic location creates many challenges for pilots. Penghu’s beautiful natural setting and its annual fireworks festival were big draws in the first half of the year, when 17,000 aircraft carrying more than 1 million people landed at Magong Airport. It’s a route that presents more challenges than most.Liu Huang-yingEx-Air Force Weather Wing ChiefFog can really impair visibility, and torrential rains are common and hard to clear from the windshield. At the key moment just before landing, at about 100 meters in the air, pilots have to see the runway. Penghu may be the home to the best seafood in all of Taiwan!
In this second episode of our Penghu Taiwan travel trip, we toured the local side of Penghu, Magong City to find great Taiwanese food, seafood, hidden beaches and cool old streets.
Penghu has a lot to see but unfortunately in this Taiwan travel vlog it was raining through some of the day so the video is a little shorter.

Penghu- Yuen Bei island
In Penghu, the strong northeast monsoon is the most distinct climate characteristic; therefore, only short grass and shrubs were planted as oppose to the luxuriant tress on the Taiwan island. The Dutch brought in the cacti that act as defensive mechanisms in 1645. The thick stems with hair and spines subsequently make for the unique island landscape.
The fact that Penghu is surrounded by sea is contributive to the development of marine sightseeing; one in particular is Yuen Bei island, it has become one of the most popular travelling destinations. It takes no more than ten minutes to go around the entire island, and the landscape is one of a kind. With pillar-like basalt, the surfaces appear as pleated skirts, with many creases, which makes for extreme valuable sights, and is currently listed under basalt preservation area.

Penghu Island
Magong city is an important trading center between Taiwan and Mainland China since Ming and Qing Dynasty. Then in this island there are many legends, historic relics and old buildings.
GETTING THERE:
■ Daily flights leave Taipei’s Songshan Airport on Uni Air, Mandarin Airlines, TransAsia Airways and Far Eastern Air Transport
SCOOTER AND BICYCLE RENTAL:
■ There are many shops in Makung City offering scooters and bicycles for rent. A 125cc scooter rents for NT$400 per day. Two helmets are provided but tourists must pay to fill the gas tank themselves.
ISLAND INFORMATION AND TOURS:
■ The South Sea Tourist Service Center in Makung City provides information and tickets for tours of the many islands south of Makung. The North Seas Tourist Service Center at the northeast tip of Baisha Island provides information and tickets for tours of Jibei and Mutou islands. Penghu Walker is a well-illustrated map that includes some of the more popular tourist attractions and destinations. The Beauties of Penghu is a detailed brochure explaining Penghu’s culture and environment. There are Chinese and English versions of each.

Penghu is also known for its many local delicacies in addition to fresh seafood. Some of the must-try include Brown Sugar Sponge Cake (黑糖糕) and Pink Cactus Fruit Sorbet Ice Cream (仙人掌冰).

Kueibishan Penghu Geopark (Penghu, Taiwan)
When ebb-tides occur between the east coastal part of Kueibishan and the uninhabited small island called Chiyu, an S-shaped gravel path with an estimation of 300 meters long will appear. The bottom layer of this path is built on volcanic agglomerate and tuff. While this path’s texture is much tougher than that of coral reef, it is a typical land-tied island.

Taiwan - Flying to Penghu......
Myself and some lovely friends flew on a TINY, propeller plane from Kaohsiung to the Penghu islands. They are an archipelago of islands off the west coast of Taiwan. The islands are absolutely STUNNING, you could be in the Philippines......turquoise ocean, white sand & hot sun. It's also perfect for beach loving westerners because Taiwanese beaches are always empty so you have paradise all to yourself. The plane took about 30mins.

Taiwan TransAsia Airways plane crash: 47 killed, 11 injured
Forty-seven people were killed when a passenger plane operated by TransAsia Airways crashed on Taiwan's outlying island county of Penghu on Wednesday evening, local officials said.
It was thunderstorm conditions during the crash, said Hsi Wen-guang, a spokesman for the Penghu County Government Fire Bureau told Reuters.
The China Times reported that TransAsia Airways flight GE 222, an ATR 72 twin-engine turboprop, was carrying 54 passengers and four crew members. It took off at 5:43 p.m. from the southern city of Kaohsiung.
At 7:06 p.m. the pilot reportedly aborted the aircraft's initial landing at Penghu's Magong airport and asked to make a go-around at an altitude of 300 feet.
The plane then lost contact with flight radars and crashed in a nearby village, killing 47 people on board, Reuters reported. Eleven people were injured and were taken to hospital, China Times reported.
