Kalimantan 1: Pangkalan Bun and Kumai
We arrive at PKN, and ride to the docks of Kumai to board a kelotok. The boat crew of captain, his assistant, the assistant's wife who is also the chef, and a 'local guide' take us up the Kumai river into the highlands of Borneo, where the last remaining wild population of orangutans might be found.

Segera saja, koordinasi upaya pencarian dilakukan.

Indonesia – Blue Planet Odyssey in Kumai
After Lombok, the BPO participants sailed to Kumai on Kalimantan to see the orangutans’ conservation area. At first it looked like a visit would not be possible due to the uncontrolled mass forest dfires on Borneo but luckily rain did stop the fire in the area (after months of damagesL. All participants did go on a river boat cruise to the different stations. Harry Rustaman is the man to see to get the best boat crew to take you to day or overnight tours: 4 to 6 for overnight/ 8-10 for day tours. The guides were excellent and the crew was great, especially the cook who had fresh and varied local meals prepared so many times a day! Orangutans and other types of monkeys were well worth the visit but so was the boat river trip itself! Filmed in November 2015!

exoticjavatrails Orang Utan conservations at Tanjung Puting Central Kalimantan INDONESIA
Tanjung Puting National Park is a national park in Indonesia located in the southeast part of West Kotawaringin Regency in the Indonesian province of Central Kalimantan (Central Borneo). The nearest main town is the capital of the Regency, Pangkalan Bun. The park is famous for its orangutan conservation.
In addition to orangutans and proboscis monkeys, the park is also home to gibbons, macaques, clouded leopards, sun bears, wild boars, porcupines, and sambar deer. The park also features many reptiles, including crocodiles, monitor lizards, and pythons, birds, including hornbills and kingfishers, and insects, such as the giant Bornean butterfly. The Pondok Ambung Tropical Forest Research Station was established in 2005 for the study of all wild species found in the park.
Today Tanjung Puting National Park is a popular ecotourism destination, with many local tour companies offering multi-day boat tours to view wildlife and visit the research centers. The park was home to 105,000 people as of 1997.The park was heavily damaged by fires in 1997 and 1998, and today remains threatened by illegal logging, illegal mining, and forest clearing for agricultural uses.
Tanjung Puting National Park, Part 3: Camp Leakey (GoPro 6 Black)

The nearest main town is the capital of the Regency, Pangkalan Bun. The park is famous for its orangutan conservation.
The park was set aside in the 1930s by the Dutch colonial government for the protection of the orangutans and proboscis monkey, and was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1977 and a national park in 1982.
In addition to orangutans and proboscis monkeys, the park is also home to gibbons, macaques, clouded leopards, sun bears, wild boars, porcupines, and sambar deer. Conservation efforts by Indonesian NGO Friends of the National Parks Foundation is leading towards a slow but progressive reforestation of damaged areas. Their reforestation work has seen the planting of thousands of saplings in the area to recreate habitat for the endemic wildlife in the area.

Orangutan - Camp Leakey Borneo Indonesia
ABOUT CAMP LEAKEY
Located in the Tanjung Puting Reserve (now National Park) in Central Borneo, Camp Leakey was established in 1971 by Dr. Biruté Galdikas and former spouse Rod Brindamour. It was named after the legendary paleo-anthropologist, Louis Leakey, who was both mentor and an inspiration to Dr. Galdikas as well as Drs. Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey. Originally consisting of just two huts, Camp Leakey is now an assemblage of permanent wooden structures designed to provide a base for scientists, staff, students, and Park Rangers.
Over the years, Camp Leakey has supported the research efforts of dozens of scientists and students including undergraduate and graduate students from Indonesia (Univeristas Nasional & Universitas Gajamada) and North America. Many have gone on to receive their Ph.D. degrees. Projects have ranged from orangutan, proboscis monkey, gibbon and leaf-eating monkey behavior and ecology, to studies of orangutan sign language abilities and cognition, to leech behavior, and river system ecology.
As an active research facility, Camp Leakey welcomes day visitors with local guides. Visitors are not allowed to overnight at Camp Leakey. OFI staff ask that you come with the appropriate permits, check-in with the rangers, observe the orangutans from a safe distance, and do not disturb the scientists conducting research.

WEEK 22 + 23 // Thank you from Hutan Baru!!
Hello from Hutan Baru, Borneo!
You guys helped us raise US$10,000, scratch that - US$18,829 (!!!!) to buy rainforest in Borneo threatened by destruction from palm oil.
Rob, Brittany, Emmanuel & co are raising money to buy 60 hectares of rainforest in Borneo for an Indonesian conservation NGO Friends of the National Parks Foundation (FNPF).
FNPF works to protect wildlife and its habitat, while supporting local communities. They receive no government funding and rely solely on the support of volunteers and donors. Close to FNPF's main reforestation site, in Jerumbun, are 60ha of rainforest which are currently up for sale. Right now a palm oil company is trying to buy this land. If they buy it, they will cut down or burn this beautiful rainforest, which is home to amazing animals, many of which are threatened including orangutans. Please help us protect this forest, preventing it from destruction and conversion to palm oil. Any kind of donation, no matter big or small, will help protect this forest – and Keep Borneo Wild.
We cannot thank everyone enough - it is because of you that is forest will remain.

Indonesia Travel and Options on The Sungai River, Kalimantan
The days were hot and humid as we chugged peacefully on the Sungai, always on the lookout for wild Orangutans, other wildlife and watched the glow worms (fireflies) light up the bushes in the evening like Christmas Trees .
We stopped to visit the only other two options if you didn't want to cruise on a klotok, Rimba Lodge and a homestay. I loved the boat, small inconveniences and all and recommend the experience. Only one more visit to the Orangutans...

Gunung Leuser - Sumatra 2018
Gunung Leuser National Park, Sumatra, Indonesia. In December 2018.
