Things To Do in Ballater Deeside
We started our week off looking for things to do in and around Ballater, it had just snowed so made sense to get out the sledges and look for somewhere awesome. We arrived at Glen Muick to a foot of snow.
The following days we walk up Craigendarroch which overlooks Ballater, it took about 2 hours to walk the circuit. The following days we went skiing at the Lecht and also Glenshee. It is one of my favorite drives from Ballater to Braemar.
Our final day we visited Muir of Dinnet which is managed by the Scottish Natural Heritage. Muir of Dinnet blends woodland, heath, open water and an impressive example of nature's sculptural work, all on one site. Visit the Burn O'Vat and feel the rock walls swallow you up in their damp embrace, cutting you off from the outside world.

Ballater
Surrounded by the glorious countryside Ballater is a picturesque Victorian village in the heart of Royal Deeside located in the Cairngorm National Park.
Lying eight miles along the River Dee to the west, its rich history and royal connections are world famous. Ballater is the nearest town to Balmoral Castle, one of the residences of the Royal Family, which explains the many ‘By Royal Appointment’ signs can be seen on local shops and business. Close by is also Royal Lochnagar Distillery which produces one of Scotland’s most exclusive whiskies. A visit to the distillery is a timeless experience.

Diamond Jubilee Cairn, 19-05-12, Ballater, Royal Deeside, Scotland,
HM Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Cairn, Ballater, Royal Deeside, Cairngorms National Park, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, UK.
Local Ballater residents build a cairn to commemorate the Diamond (60 years) Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II, 1952 to 2012.
The cairn consists of 60 stones gathered from the hills surrounding Balmoral Castle and the 'Royal Warrant' village of Ballater, the area with very fond memories to Her Majesty.
The 'Royal Warrant' village of Ballater, has historical links with Great Britain's Royal Family, stretching back to the mid 1800's when Queen Victoria & Prince Albert purchased Balmoral Castle some 8 miles away to the West.
The cairn takes a prominent position on the Ballater Village green in the centre of the village, adjacent to Glen Muick Kirk.
This video records the arrival of the 'main' stone and its placement at the centre of the 60 (one for each year of Her Majesty's Reign) stones making up the cairn.
Over several months Ballater locals have collected the stones from many hills surrounding the area, some from very remote locations and, at times, in atrocious weather conditions.
Contributions from many residents and visitors to the village have been received towards the projects success.
In the near future many heathers will be planted amongst the stones and a plaque stating the name of the hills from which the stones were located.
The tree that you see close to the cairn was planted in 1990 to commemorate the 90th birthday of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother.
