Bobcaygeon Camping & Fishing May 1969
A camping and fishing trip taken with my Dad, and his friend Frank, from May 1969. This is a silent Super 8 Movie Film, and thus has NO AUDIO on it at all. It was filmed in Bobcaygeon, Ontario, Canada on Memorial Day weekend (Rememberance Day in Canada). The campground was at a place called Lilac Lodge south of Bobcaygeon on the eastern side of Pigeon Lake, part of the Kawarthas Lake region. In it are pictures of the lake, fishing, Lock #32 in Bobcaygeon, which is part of the Trent-Severn Canal system. I hope you like it and please feel free to leave comments. Both my Dad and his friend have long since passed away, so it is with pleasure and pride that I submit this to YouTube for all the good times we had in that part of the world.
Locking Through the BobCaygeon Lock
The Trent Severn Waterway is one of Canada's most spectacular waterways. The Waterway stretches 240 miles from Lake Ontario's Bay of Quinte to Lake Huron's Georgian Bay. My wife and I readily accepted an invitation to join our friends Linda and Dundee for a week on a houseboat on the Trent Severn Waterway.
Construction began in the Kawartha Lakes region in 1833 with the lock at Bobcaygeon marking its beginning. It took over 87 years to finish the entire Waterway and only until 1920 could a boat travel the whole route between Lake Ontario to Lake Huron.
Bobcaygeon, Ontario, Canada
Video taken around the centre of Bobcaygeon, Ontario, Canada. The town has a population of a little over 3,500 but the numbers swell in the summer as people from areas like Toronto escape to the Kawartha Lakes region.
The most important aspect of Bobcaygeon, other than the famous Kawartha Dairy, is the boat locks that are a part of the Trent Canal. The locks connect Sturgeon Lake in the west to Pigeon Lake in the east. Bobcaygeon was the site of the first locks ever built in the Trent system, dating back to 1832.
The town is located about an hour and a half from the Greater Toronto Area, to the northeast. The closest major centres are Lindsay and Peterborough.
