49 dead in NZ attack as police lock down Christchurch.
Police have confirmed that the attacks on two Christchurch mosques has left at least 49 dead, and dozens of others injured. One gunman, identified as an Australian extremist has been arrested by police, who also took two other men into custody.

This lift was annoyingly locked off but at least we still get a look inside. This is the first 5500 I have found that uses centre open 2-speed doors. The buttons are Linea 300. Mailerdiablo has filmed this lift and was able to take a ride. The only way I can see taking a ride being possible is riding the car park lifts down to the ground floor after hours (when ground is unlocked) and then coming up in this lift as only the ground floor seems to be locked in this lift. Featuring a ride in the glass 5500 too. The 3300's in the car park can also be seen. Behind the door at the end is where this lift opens up to on the ground floor. Mailerdiablo's video of this lift:

Locked Up Warrior: New Zealand's Maori
New Zealand ranks as one of the world's most peaceful countries in the Global Peace Index every year. Yet despite a strong reputation for social justice and equality, the South Pacific nation has the second highest rate of imprisonment rates in the western world.
In the past two decades, the jail population has doubled. One international study examining law and order across western nations attributes it to a tough on crime approach by New Zealand's political parties since the 1980's, even though crime rates are low.
Today each prisoner costs on average $94,000 to lock up and the current government has described New Zealand's prison problem as a moral and fiscal failure.
Making sure the punishment fits the crime is a widely debated subject in New Zealand but what is undeniable is the gross overrepresentation of minorities in jails.
One in two prisoners is indigenous Maori even though they only account for just 15 percent of the population. Maori are overrepresented in all sectors of the criminal justice system due to soaring rates of child poverty, school dropout, unemployment and family breakdown within indigenous communities.
Many say going to prison has become normalised in Maori society because every child has a relative who is locked up. They also claim that government agencies are failing the children of Maori prisoners, leaving them vulnerable to becoming a new generation of offenders.
Gang affiliations also play their part, providing surrogate families to disenfranchised youth. Since the 1960's, young Maori have joined the ranks of patched gangs like the Mongrel Mob and Black Power who were modelled on US bikie gangs like the Hells Angels.
Over the decades the gangs have been involved in violent crime, drug trafficking and brutal gang rapes. Both the Mongrel Mob and Black Power retain a strong presence across the country but many Maori youth are also forming their own smaller American-style street gangs.
Recently, the New Zealand prison system has introduced cultural units and innovative programmes that try to connect Maori with their families instead of the gangs and to encourage prisoners to get back in touch with their cultural ancestry by learning traditions like the Haka, a famous warrior dance.
But only half of the men in these units speak with their family and reestablishing that bond is not an easy task.
Maori leaders who have seen these programmes at work say they have little effect unless they connect inmates with community projects on the outside.
New Zealand's indigenous population is also overrepresented in reoffending rates. With half of the prisoners returning to jail within two years of their release, the government has introduced more education and addiction programmes in jail.

Schools across Christchurch were in lock down on Friday, March 15, during the mass shooting at two mosques in the city, where 50 people were killed.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described today's mass shooting in Christchurch as one of New Zealand's darkest days, advising the people of Christchurch to remain in lock down.
Clearly what has happened here is an extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence, Jacinda Ardern said.
Presently the police do have one suspect in custody, however there could be others involved, Ms Ardern said.
There are multiple scenes involved in this incident as well.
She could not give confirmation of casualties or fatalities, but she described it as one of New Zealand's darkest days.
Many of those directly affected in this shooting may be migrants to New Zealand. They may even be refugees. They have chosen to make New Zealand their home and it is their home. They are us, she said.
The person who has perpetuated this violence against us, is not.
She said to continue to listen for information, stay indoors - please remain in lock down, we are potentially still dealing with an evolving situation.
For now my thoughts and the thoughts of all New Zealand are those affected and their families.
Opposition leader Simon Bridges condemned the attack and gave his condolences to the Islamic community and to the people Canterbury.
We stand with and support the New Zealand Islamic community.
No one in this country should live in fear, no matter their race or religion, their politics or their beliefs.
My heart goes out to all of you.

LOCKED IN A CAGE WITH LIONS!
During the fist couple of days of our Honeymoon in New Zealand, we drove from Christchurch to Akaroa and took a cruise through Black Cat Cruises. We saw hector's dolphins and a group of fur seals.
On Janelle's 30th birthday, we went to Orana Wildlife Park where we fed giraffes and got locked in a cage on the back of a truck and rode through the lion exhibit while they fed them through the sides of the cage we were in! It was such an incredibly unique experience!!!

Picket to support locked out CMP workers by Occupy Ōtautahi Christchurch
On Saturday the 5th of November a group from Occupy Ōtautahi Christchurch picketed a business suppled by CMP (Canterbury Meat Packers).
The picket was organised because up in Palmerston North, 111 CMP workers have been locked out of their workplace because CMP offered them new contracts with pay cuts of up to 30% and increased work hours. The workers rightly refused to sign this contract, so CMP responded by locking them out of their jobs without pay.
The lockout has continued for around two weeks so far as the workers refuse to budge, and an emergency fund has been set up for donations to the 111 families struggling because of this corporate bullying. CMP is part of the multi-national corporation ANZCO which supplies New Zealand meat throughout the world, as well as McDonalds here in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Our picket was originally planned for outside the Christchurch ANZCO office in Hornby, but when we got there it said that the office had moved to Blenheim Road.
As it turned out the ANZCO office wasn't on Blenheim Road but there was a West Meats butchery. We asked them if they were supplied by CMP but the staff denied it and were intentionally vague, though a source had told us that they were supplied by CMP (the fact that West Meats had already hired security guards gave it away too). After a bit of investigation around the site we found some ANZCO boxes around the back of the store so set up a successful picket that drew a lot of attention on the busy Blenheim Road.
Canterbury Meat Packers is doing its best to suppress word of their disgusting pressure tactics from getting out (to the point where Facebook wouldn't even let us use the phrases Canterbury Meat Packers or CMP in the event title for this picket) so please spread the word and support the 111 locked out CMP workers!

We are on the cusp, really, of that full-speed rebuild. All of the plans have been laid, the rebuild is ramping up all the time. The insurance industry is steadily paying out on the residential claims, although it'll still be another year or two before we actually have finished repairing.

STORYLINE:
Two years after an earthquake ripped through New Zealand's second largest city, killing 185 people and destroying homes and businesses, Christchurch is still locked in the recovery phase.
The city is an example of how even the wealthiest countries struggle to recover from large-scale catastrophes.
In some cases, developing countries may in fact be better off.
Within two years of the devastating tsunami on 24 December 2004 in Indonesia, half the 100-thousand permanent homes needed had been completed, and almost 700 schools had been built or repaired.
But in Japan, nearly two years after the March 2011 tsunami flattened the northeast coast, few homes have yet been rebuilt.
In Christchurch, a major bottleneck is insurance.
Most claims haven't been paid, because insurance companies and a government insurance fund that covers damage up to 100-thousand New Zealand dollars (85-thousand US dollars) are tussling over who should pay for what.
Continuing aftershocks, topping 11-thousand last month, have added to the delays, as insurers wait for the ground to become more stable.
Mayor Bob Parker said that rebuilding houses could take another two years to complete, while bigger projects such as a hospital, convention centre and performing arts centre may require six.
We are on the cusp, really, of that full-speed rebuild, Mayor Parker said from the high-rise city council building near the downtown disaster area.
All the plans have been laid, the rebuild is ramping up all the time.
The city's population has declined by 13,500, or 3.6 percent, from the 380-thousand people who lived there before the magnitude 6.3 earthquake.
Some left by choice; others because they no longer had a home.
Parker predicts a rebound as the 35 (b) billion New Zealand dollar (29.5 (b) billion US dollar) reconstruction effort gathers pace, powering an anticipated economic boom that will draw in outside workers.

But Christchurch's residents had thought the city would be closer to recovery by now.
Phil Thompson is one of those whose suburban house was shaken off its foundations by the quake.
The 65-year-old retiree still lives in a cramped trailer home parked on the neat lawn in front of his twisted wooden bungalow.
Thompson wasn't insured, which he has come to regard as a blessing as others battle for payouts.

40 victims in shootings at 2 New Zealand mosques, 4 suspects in custody

New Zealand police have defused several improvised explosive devices found attached to vehicles in Christchurch following mass shootings at two mosques that left up to 40 people dead.
The shooter entered the Masjid Al Noor mosque 10 minutes after prayers began and let off “dozens, if not hundreds of rounds,” witness Ahmad al-Mahmoud told New Zealand outlet Stuff. He described the man as white-skinned, blond, short, and wearing a helmet and bulletproof vest.

A second shooting took place at Linwood Masjid, where a witness says they saw a man leave the mosque wearing camouflage gear and a motorcycle helmet, while unconfirmed reports indicate a bomb was found on nearby Strickland Ave.
A Muslim local reportedly chased the gunmen off from the Linwood mosque, firing two shots at them as they drove off.
Four suspects are currently in custody, including one woman, and public facilities remain on lockdown while police are urging mosques elsewhere in New Zealand to close their doors for the remainder of the day. One of those detained has been confirmed to be an Australian citizen.
PM Ardern has confirmed that none of the suspects were on security watch lists.
“I want to ask anyone who was thinking of going to a mosque anywhere in New Zealand today, not to go,” commissioner Mike Bush said.
A crisis meeting of national security agencies is underway at the Wellington headquarters of the New Zealand national police.
Officers cleared buildings near the mosques, while Christchurch schools have been placed on lockdown. Another witness said he saw “a man in handcuffs being led away by police.”

A text sent by the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand reportedly said 50 people were shot during Friday prayers.
Twenty emergency vehicles are on the scene, and six people have reportedly been taken to the hospital, with two in serious condition.

Footage has emerged of police ramming a vehicle and arresting a shooter.
One of the shooters, believed to be a 28-year-old Australian man, livestreamed the attack on Facebook, according to local media, and penned a lengthy manifesto characterizing the shooting as a “terrorist attack.”
The attack resulted in the highest death toll from gun violence in the nation’s recent history.
New Zealand’s three largest internet providers, Spark, Vodafone and Vocus, have announced they are blocking customers’ access to three websites located outside the country that are still hosting the livestream of one shooter’s rampage, an unprecedented restrictive measure Spark spokesman Andrew Pirie called “the responsible thing for the industry to do.”

Bangladesh Cricket Team Escape Christchurch Mosque Shooting in New Zealand
Armed police in New Zealand swarmed central Christchurch of New Zealand as shooting has been reported at a mosque in the South Island city.
According to local media, the incident took place at a mosque on Deans Ave, near Hagley Park. There are also reports of another shooting at a different mosque in the same area.
Cops have locked down several parts of the Christchurch city responding to the mass shooting at 2 mosques.
6 people have been reported dead and several people have been reported injured in the incident. Cops are still investigating the issue and more details are awaited.
The Bangladesh Cricket team had a close shave in the incident. The Bangladesh cricket team was just pulling up at the mosque when the shooting happened.
