Tourism in fact makes a significant year-round contribution to the economy: in summer, its secluded beaches and snug fishing harbors draw sightseers, kayakers and campers, while in winter it's all about the fantastic northern lights and skiing.

Henningsvær is a fishing village located on several small islands off the southern coast of Austvågøya in the Lofoten archipelago in Norway.
Gimsøya is an island in Vågan municipality in Nordland county, Norway. Gimsøya is situated between the islands of Austvågøya and Vestvågøya in the Lofoten archipelago.
Svolvær was an important fishing village for a long time, and because of this, it was given town status in 1918. On 1 July 1918, the new town of Svolvær was separated from the municipality of Vågan to become its own municipality.
Other than the massive fishing industry, tourism is becoming increasingly important. Svolvær is also a major transportation hub and favourite starting point for tourists visiting the Lofoten islands. Approximately 200,000 tourists visit Svolvær each year.

For centuries, this in turn drew farmer-fishermen from the mainlands of the north coast. Although cod stocks have dwindled dramatically in recent years, fishing still vies with tourism as Lofoten's largest industry, as evidenced by the wooden drying racks that lattice nearly every village on the islands.

Lofoten (Old Norse: Lófót) was originally the old name of the island Vestvågøya. The first element is ló (i.e., lynx) and the last element is derived from Norse fótr (i.e., foot), as the shape of the island must have been compared with a foot of a lynx. (The old name of the neighbouring island Flakstadøya was Vargfót, the foot of a wolf, from vargr wolf. See also Ofoten.)

Lofoten Islands Nature | Svolvær / Årstein in 4K | Norway
[Lofoten Norway Nature] Next part of our travel in Norway. In this video we visited Arstein and stayed at the city Svolvaer. We went hiking in Svolvaer to one of the mountain peaks. I have to say this walk wasn’t very easy in the beginning. The path to follow wasn’t really a path you could easily follow. For me it was no problem, but I can see some people who haven’t done much hiking in their live, can have a little trouble reaching the mountain top. This area is still located at the Lofoten Islands.
We also walked to the bay of Svolvaer. This walk was something better for the whole family. Nice views and awesome places in the surrounding area.
General information about the place:
Lofoten is an archipelago and a traditional district in the county of Nordland, Norway. Lofoten is known for a distinctive scenery with dramatic mountains and peaks, open sea and sheltered bays, beaches and untouched lands. If you are seeking unforgettable nature experiences, Lofoten will definitely not let you down. Due to the area’s diverse landscape, you can go hiking, skiing, fishing, ocean rafting or scuba diving. It is also one of Norway’s best sites for surfing, and one of the world’s northernmost.

The main islands, Austvågøy, Vestvågøy, Flakstadøy and Moskenesøy, are separated from the mainland by Vestfjorden, but all are connected by road bridges and tunnels. Lofoten is known for excellent fishing, spectacular nature attractions such as the northern lights and the midnight sun, and small villages off the beaten track. Kayak between the islands, go fishing for the catch of your life, or look for sea eagles soaring in the sky.
Wild Camping in the Lofoten Islands - Norway
Lofoten is a group of islands in the northern part of Norway. With its postcard-looking small fishing villages nestled in fjords, dotting a very rugged coast with abrupt peaks rising directly from the ocean, the archipelago is often described as one of the most scenic parts of Norway.
The Lofoten archipelago consists of many islands:
Hinnøya (southwestern part)
Austvågøy (southern part)
Gimsøy
Vestvågøy - Vestvågøy is a municipality and island in the county of Nordland in northern Norway. It has a population of 10,764 people, making it the most populated area in the regions of Lofoten and Vesterålen.
Flakstadøy
Moskenesøya
Værøy - a small island around six hours from Bodo by ferry (via Moskenes) and around 2 hours by ferry from Moskenes. The island has a mountainous ridge running through the centre and flat farmland below the mountains. It is famous both for its scenery and the abundance of puffins who nest here over the summer.

The beautiful Country and Western singers from Vaeroy and their Country Westen song DIVORCE are featured in this video. Hi-res photographic tour of Vaeroy fishing village in Aug 2009 by mikeminnesota. If the boat from Bodo Norway drops you off, it will not come back untill next day. There is really only one place to stay on the island. Just as get off the boat, take a right and theres a building that looks like a hotel. I never found the building so I walked the island all night and got on the boat the next day.

Lofoten is known for a distinctive scenery with dramatic mountains and peaks, open sea and sheltered bays, beaches and untouched lands. Though lying within the Arctic Circle, the archipelago experiences one of the world's largest elevated temperature anomalies relative to its high latitude. There is evidence of human settlement extending back at least 11,000 yrs in Lofoten, and the earliest archaeological sites ... are only about 5,500 yrs old, at the transition from the early to late Stone Age. Iron Age agriculture, livestock, and significant human habitation can be traced back to ~250 BCE.[1]
Svolvær in Lofoten, Norway. View from the ferry harbour.
The town of Vågan (Norse Vágar) is the first known town formation in northern Norway. It existed in the early Viking Age, maybe earlier, and was located on the southern coast on eastern Lofoten, near today's village Kabelvåg in Vågan municipality. However, the Lofotr Viking Museum with the reconstructed 83-meter-long longhouse (the largest known) is located near Borg on Vestvågøy, which has many archeological finds from the Iron Age and Viking Age.[2]
The islands have for more than 1,000 years been the centre of great cod fisheries, especially in winter, when the cod migrates south from the Barents Sea and gathers in Lofoten to spawn. Bergen in southwestern Norway was for a long time the hub for further export south to different parts of Europe, particularly so when trade was controlled by the Hanseatic League. In the lowland areas, particularly Vestvågøy, agriculture plays a significant role, as it has done since the Bronze Age.
Lofotr was originally the name of the island of Vestvågøy only. Later it became the name of the chain of islands. The chain of islands with its pointed peaks looks like a lynx foot from the mainland. In Norwegian, it is always a singular. Another name one might come across, is Lofotveggen or the Lofoten wall. The archipelago looks like a closed wall when seen from elevated points around Bodø or when arriving from the sea, some 100 kilometres (62 miles) long, and 800–1,000 metres (2,600–3,300 feet) high.
In 1941, the islands were raided by British Commandos during Operation Claymore in March and a subsequent diversionary attack to support the Vaagso raid in December.
