Lofoten is known for a distinctive scenery with dramatic mountains and peaks, open sea and sheltered bays, beaches and untouched lands. Though lying within the Arctic Circle, the archipelago experiences one of the world's largest elevated temperature anomalies relative to its high latitude. There is evidence of human settlement extending back at least 11,000 yrs in Lofoten, and the earliest archaeological sites ... are only about 5,500 yrs old, at the transition from the early to late Stone Age. Iron Age agriculture, livestock, and significant human habitation can be traced back to ~250 BCE.[1]
Svolvær in Lofoten, Norway. View from the ferry harbour.
The town of Vågan (Norse Vágar) is the first known town formation in northern Norway. It existed in the early Viking Age, maybe earlier, and was located on the southern coast on eastern Lofoten, near today's village Kabelvåg in Vågan municipality. However, the Lofotr Viking Museum with the reconstructed 83-meter-long longhouse (the largest known) is located near Borg on Vestvågøy, which has many archeological finds from the Iron Age and Viking Age.[2]
The islands have for more than 1,000 years been the centre of great cod fisheries, especially in winter, when the cod migrates south from the Barents Sea and gathers in Lofoten to spawn. Bergen in southwestern Norway was for a long time the hub for further export south to different parts of Europe, particularly so when trade was controlled by the Hanseatic League. In the lowland areas, particularly Vestvågøy, agriculture plays a significant role, as it has done since the Bronze Age.
Lofotr was originally the name of the island of Vestvågøy only. Later it became the name of the chain of islands. The chain of islands with its pointed peaks looks like a lynx foot from the mainland. In Norwegian, it is always a singular. Another name one might come across, is Lofotveggen or the Lofoten wall. The archipelago looks like a closed wall when seen from elevated points around Bodø or when arriving from the sea, some 100 kilometres (62 miles) long, and 800–1,000 metres (2,600–3,300 feet) high.
In 1941, the islands were raided by British Commandos during Operation Claymore in March and a subsequent diversionary attack to support the Vaagso raid in December.

A half-day Norwegian Jade bus tour visiting the Lofotr Viking Museum. Freezing in the process and looking at decapitated cod heads.
Just kidding. A great tour and time well spent. Serious about the fish heads though.
Lofoten, Vaeroy Island, Norway Island fishing village
The beautiful Country and Western singers from Vaeroy and their Country Westen song DIVORCE are featured in this video. Hi-res photographic tour of Vaeroy fishing village in Aug 2009 by mikeminnesota. If the boat from Bodo Norway drops you off, it will not come back untill next day. There is really only one place to stay on the island. Just as get off the boat, take a right and theres a building that looks like a hotel. I never found the building so I walked the island all night and got on the boat the next day.

Lofoten Drone Flight: Lofoten is an archipelago in Norway. Its known for its dramatic scenery, with peaks like the Svolværgeita pinnacle jutting up into the sky. Himmeltindan Mountain sits on Vestvågøya Island. The nearby Lofotr Viking Museum features a Viking longhouse reconstruction. Cycle routes cover the islands, passing through fishing villages like Henningsvær, which has colorful buildings lining its waterways. To the south, the preserved fishing village Å houses both the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum and the Stockfish Museum. Stockfish is a local delicacy made from spawning cod and found in many of the regions restaurants. The archipelago is a jumping-off point for boating and kayaking trips through the fjords to spot seals, sea eagles and, farther afield, whales. At the southern end of the Lofoten island chain, Røst Reef is a huge, deep-water coral reef. Its known for cold-water coral Lophelia, which grows in abundance, and fish including ling, redfish and tusk. [wikipedia // Google]

Lofoten - the most beautiful place in the World! Norway. Лофотени.
Lofoten (Norwegian pronunciation: [ˈluːfuːtn̩]) is an archipelago and a traditional district in the county of Nordland, Norway. Lofoten is known for a distinctive scenery with dramatic mountains and peaks, open sea and sheltered bays, beaches and untouched lands. Though lying within the Arctic Circle, the archipelago experiences one of the world's largest elevated temperature anomalies relative to its high latitude.
Lofoten (Old Norse: Lófót) was the original name of the island Vestvågøya. The first element is ló (i.e., lynx) and the last element is derived from Norse fótr (i.e., foot), as the shape of the island must have been compared with that of a lynx's foot. (The old name of the neighbouring island Flakstadøya was Vargfót, wolf's foot, from vargr wolf. See also Ofoten.)
There is evidence of human settlement extending back at least 11,000 years in Lofoten, and the earliest archaeological sites ... are only about 5,500 years old, at the transition from the early to late Stone Age. Lofoten Islands - Norway - HD
Lofoten is on the UNESCO list of world heritage and situated north of the polar circle in Norway.
Lofoten Islands is also No. 2 on The Observers list of 20 paradise Islands around the world:
Nowhere does the midnight sun shine to greater effect than on Norway's Lofoten Islands, anchored above the Arctic Circle. Their purple mountains and green meadows, bright fishing boats and rust-red cottages on stilts are mirrored in Caribbean-blue sea. Edgar Allen Poe described the seas around as 'lashed into ungovernable fury... .
The main tourist islands, Austvagoy, Vestvagoy, Flakstad and Moskenes, appeal to writers and artists as well as outdoor enthusiasts, with climbing, hiking, riding, canoeing, biking, rafting and fishing highly popular. Puffins, cormorants, guillemots, eagles and seals bring in the wildlife watchers. For anyone with Viking ancestry a visit to the new Viking museum at Borg is a must.

On Tour... LOFOTEN A Fascinating Island Of The Far North
OTT-DVD-137 - Situated in the extreme north of Europe the Lofoten have always been a special place. The picturesque beauty of this group of islands located just off the Norwegian coast has lost nothing of its age old fascination and colourful sense of history.
With fourteen hundred inhabitants Stamsund is the main fishing village of the archipelago. Although the surrounding fishing grounds contain an abundance of fish the industry that once flourished here is not as prosperous as it once was. Now for much of the population tourism provides a lucrative alternative to the traditional fishing industry of bygone times and the five large main islands of the Lofoten have a perfect infrastructure and are connected with each other by way of various bridges and tunnels.
The small village of Nusfjord is located in front of a captivating backdrop of mountains. Due to its unique location it looks more like a high mountain village than a fishing settlement. The village is both an historical as well as a cultural treasure and almost all of its buildings date back to the nineteenth century when its entire population worked in the fishing industry.
At the end of the Lofot Highway at the southern point of Moskenesøy Island is the picturesque village of Å. The red of the houses adds interesting contrast to the surroundings as they are mainly dominated by grey rock. Tourists come to this village to visit two museums: the Stockfishmuseum and the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum. It became well known due to its unusual name and the inhabitants of Å are proud of the fact that their village has the shortest name in the world.
The beautiful unspoiled landscape of these 'Islands Of The Gods' is full of captivating mystique and it no wonder that the Vikings also romanticised about their natural splendour.
Nordic Series Chapter 3: Fjord Adventure (Norway)
This is my first solo trip and the destination was Norway! After seeing some of my friends did it, I felt motivated and decided to give it a try as well. Norway is my first Scandinavian country and its such a beautiful place with great people, environment, community and modern facilities without even disturbing the wonders of nature.
I went there for 6 days; 3 days in Oslo and 3 days in Bergen. The places I visited in Oslo were:
1) The Sculpture Park
2) Arkenshus Fortress
3) National Opera and Ballet
4) Polar Ship Fram Museum
5) Viking Ship Museum
6) Nobel Peace Center
7) National Gallery
Besides that, I was just walking and sightseeing around the city. I took the train to Bergen from Oslo S and the journey took about 6 hours. The view of the Norwegian countryside, nature along the way was really amazing and beautiful indeed. The places I visited in Bergen (known as the gateway of the fjords) were:
1) Fish Market
2) Bryggen
3) Mt. Floyen
4) Fjord Cruise Tour to Mostraumen
5) Nordnesparken
I managed to try the salmon dish and it was delicious indeed :) During my last day in Bergen, I saw some government escorts, police and media arrived at the fish market. I thought maybe it was the minister of Norway but it turned out to be the prime minister of Portugal.
To sum it up, Norway is such a beautiful place to visit. The people are very kind and nice. Norway has the best system in the world, better than capitalism and communism. The government is so efficient that it gives the resources back to the people, making it one of the richest countries in the world. Norway is now my favourite country after Iceland and I do hope I can go there again in the future insya Allah and next time, I want to conquer the Trolltunga (or Preikestolen because its easier than Trolltunga).
Till next time Norway!
