THE HYPE IS REAL: Lofoten Islands, Norway
Lofoten Islands, Norway - The Lofoten islands off the northern coast of Norway, are home to some of the most beautiful and rugged stretches of landscape I’ve ever seen.
Our journey to Lofoten actually started in the city of Bodø, where we spent the day exploring the city and the saltstraumen maelstrom before catching the ferry from Bodo to Lofoten (Moskenes).
-
The saltstraumen is one of the best things to do in Bodo, as it is a small strait that connects the sea and a fjord with one of the strongest tidal currents in the world.
This wild whirlpool of boils and vortex’s happens when tides change and water funnels through the strait.
-
From our basecamp in Sorvagen, we have two days to explore the best things to do in Lofoten, on the southern islands, before needing to report to the capital city of Svolvaer for a dream event.
Our first stop is on the southern end of Moskenes Island at little fishing village called Å - Once a town that specialized in stockfish, it’s main income now is tourism, although, there isn’t many people around this time of year - which is actually one of the big reasons why we came in March.
-
Next up, its the oldest and perhaps most picturesque fishing village in the Lofoten Archipelago - Hamnøy
-
And just a few minutes back down the E10, is Reine. The 69-acre village is the administrative center of Moskenes Municipality, has a population of 314 people, and it’s major lifeline is very easy to see - and smell.
Cod or Skrei, is known as the Norwegian Miracle.
Skrei comes from one of the world’s largest and most sustainably managed cod stocks.
Although it doesn’t seem like it here, only 10% of over 400 million migrating cod are caught and branded skrei.
All over the Lufoten islands between February and May, you’ll see an endless supply of drying cod on these giant wooden racks.
They’re left out here for about three months, before being brought inside to mature for up to another 12 months.
Stockfish is the countries longest sustained export commodity, going all the way back to the viking days.
-
We also stopped at Anita's for her classic fish burger and finished the day at Ramberg beach (Rambergstranda).

After enjoying a picturesque sunset over the fjords of Bergen it was time to head up further north for part 3 of this series where we wanted to show you the best places to visit in the Lofoten and the city of Bodø. The Lofoten Islands are characterised by their mountains and peaks, sheltered inlets, stretches of seashore and large virgin areas which made up for an incredible road trip.
Before heading over to the Lofoten we landed in Bodø where we met up with Ellen from the Northern Norway Tourism Board who showed us around her city with all the sights it has to offer ranging from streetart to the tidal pools at Saltstraumen. Then it was time to take the ferry to the Lofoten. Besides all the Instagram Hotspots on the Lofoten we checked out the various beaches, explored the surfing culture and took part in the World Championship of Cod fishing.

Kayaking Reine Fjord, Lofoten Norway - July 2018
The video tries to summarise our amazing 4 hour guided kayak tour of the spectacular Reine fjord.
My wife and I are experienced kayakers but decided nevertheless to join ReineAdventure's guided tour since we have no experience with tidal currents or possibly rapidly changing weather conditions (like fall winds through the fjords).
We were 10 kayakers (2 experienced, 6 beginners and 2 guides) and started out from Sakrisøya (island just northeast of Reine). Since we are experienced my wife and I could chose single kayaks which we (and the guides) prefer and the remaining 6 beginners got double kayaks since they are easier and safer for beginners especially considering the water temperature is only around 12° C (53° F).
Here is roughly our approximately 12,5 km (8 miles) long Reine fjord route
Note that you can zoom in and out, pan, change map type between map (karta), sea chart (sjökort), and satellite.
We were all very pleased with the tour but this video can in no way capture the full grandur of Reine fjord, you simply have to experience it onsite yourself !

???????? Lofoten Islands, Norway - holiday on the Arctic Circle
Lofoten is a Norwegian archipelago off the coast of northern Norway, consisting of about 80 islands, including Austvågøya, Skrova, Gimsøy, Vestvågøy, Flakstadøy, Moskenesøy, Værøy and Røst.
Primarily, the eastern sides of the islands are populated. The region is also known because of the northern lights which can be very well observed, since the winter climate is relatively mild and the aurora oval crosses the Lofoten.
