A Visit to Borg, Lofoten Viking Museum
At Lofotr Vikingmuseum in Vestvågøy, Lofoten, Nordland county in Norway, you may see a reconstruction of the great king´s hall at Borg, the center of power in the Kingdom of Hálógaland between 400-900 A.D.E. Hálógaland means The Land of the High Flames, probably a reference to the northern lights. Their royal dynasty believed themselves to be descendants of the river goddess Nauma and her husband Sæmingr, who was a son of Odin and the goddess of skiing, Skadi (who had a relationship with Odin after divorcing Njord). The last king of Borg was probably Olaf Tvennumbruni, mentioned in Landnámabók (The Book of the Settlement of Iceland), who together with one fifth of the Norwegian population emigrated to settle Iceland in order to flee the tyranny of Harald Luva (Filter Hair), better known as Harald Hárfagri (Hair-Fair, a later medieval polishing of the name of the king who united all the 30 tribes of Norway into one kingdom during the 870s. In Iceland, they created a democratic republic based on the principles of the age-old tradition Norse parliamentary democracy but without the kings. The people of Hálógaland, which consisted of the counties Nordland, Troms and Nord-Trøndelag, consisted both of Norse-speaking Háleygir and of Sámi tribes, who like other residents paid taxes to the king in the form of furs and ivory. At Lofotr Vikingmuseum you will find both reconstructions of ancient architecture and interior, crafts and many colorful reenactors are also part of the exhibition.
The music is from a long-dissolved band called Ehwaz, one of Norway´s first ethnic Norse musical bands, these songs composed and sung by my brother T.Kvilhaug. Other members of the band have continued with the similar style music, such as Kjell Braaten and Folket Bortafor Nordavinden.

A half-day Norwegian Jade bus tour visiting the Lofotr Viking Museum. Freezing in the process and looking at decapitated cod heads.
Just kidding. A great tour and time well spent. Serious about the fish heads though.

The Lofotr Viking Museum (Lofotr Vikingmuseum) is a historical museum based on a reconstruction and archaeological excavation of a Viking chieftain's village on the island of Vestvågøya in the Lofoten archipelago in Nordland county, Norway. It is located in the small village of Borg, near Bøstad, in the municipality of Vestvågøy.
It is part of the Museum Nord consortium.
In 1983, archaeologists uncovered the Chieftain House at Borg (På Borg på Vestvågøya i Lofoten), a large Viking Era building believed to have been already established around the year 500 AD.
A joint Scandinavian research project was conducted at Borg from 1986 until 1989. Excavations revealed the largest building ever to be found from the Viking period in Norway. The foundation of the Chieftain House at Borg measured 83 metres (272 ft) long and 9 metres (30 ft) high. The seat at Borg is estimated to have been abandoned around AD 950.
After the excavation ended, the remains of what had once been the long-house remained visible. The long-house has been reconstructed slightly to the north of the excavation site. In 1995, the Lofotr Viking Museum was opened. The museum includes a full reconstruction of the 83-metre (272 ft) long chieftain's house, a blacksmith's forge, two ships (replicas of the Gokstad ship, one in full scale size) and their boathouses, and various reenactments intended to immerse the visitor in life at the time of the Vikings. The main building was designed by Norwegian architect, Gisle Jakhelln.
The administration of Lofotr Viking Museum is located in the former parsonage of the Borge Church. In September 2006, a planned enlargement of Lofotr, the building of a large amphitheater into the ground between the reception building and the Chieftain House, was postponed because of the archeological findings of some 2,000-year-old cooking sites and pole holes at the site.

When you step into a full-scale re-creation of the largest chieftain’s house ever unearthed, you will feel transported back to the Viking Age. Light flickers from open fires and fish-oil lamps, and you breathe in the scents of tarred wood and lamb stew. The smoke rises nine metres up to the roof of the mighty hall. The farm, smithy, Viking ships and boathouse area are brought to life by guides, arts and crafts and activities – and everyone is dressed in period costumes. Take a trip on the Viking ship and feel what it was like to have to use muscle power to travel across the water.Lofotr Viking Museum has been built on the site of the residence of one of the mighty Norwegian chieftains. On the basis of finds made during extensive archaeological digs on the site, the museum presents new and fascinating information about the Vikings of the north. It is the largest building that has ever been unearthed from the Viking Age, and it represents the pinnacle of the aristocracy of the time. The chieftain’s residence, which was reconstructed in 1995, is a “three-nave long-house” measuring an impressive 83 metres in length. The building comprises a living area with a central hearth, an entrance hall with two openings, a storage area, a barn and a banqueting hall with a large central fireplace. During the guided tour, you will have the chance to see demonstrations of traditional crafts and to look at some of the finds made here.

VIKING MUSEUM & THE FINAL KILOMETERS | CYCLING IN THE LOFOTEN ISLANDS, NORWAY
Two complete cycling newbies set off on a five day cycling and camping trip in the gorgeous nature of the Lofoten Islands above the Arctic Circle in Norway. On Day 4 we visit the Lofotr Viking Museum, one of the top 3 best viking museums in Scandinavia, then ended up hurrying back to Lyngvær camping for a night inside and a shower. On Day 5 I barely filmed anything, but we visited the fisherman's village of Henningsvær.
