Loire Valley - France Best Place ???????? Travel & Discover
The architectural heritage in the valley's historic towns is notable, especially its châteaux, such as the Château de Montsoreau, Château d'Amboise, Château d'Azay-le-Rideau, Château de Chambord, Château de Chinon, Château du Rivau, Château d'Ussé, Château de Villandry and Chenonceau. The châteaux, numbering more than three hundred, represent a nation of builders starting with the necessary castle fortifications in the 10th century to the splendour of those built half a millennium later.

Château de Sully-sur-Loire • A Moated Fortress in the Loire Valley France
Château de Sully-sur-Loire - A Moated Fortress in the Loire Valley France. During our cruise we visit Château de Sully-sur-Loire, a moated fortress and 'monument historique'. The Château de Sully-sur-Loire is a castle, converted to a palatial seigneurial residence, situated in the commune of Sully-sur-Loire, Loiret, France.
The castle originally belonged to Georges de la Trémoïlle, who infuriated Joan of Arc by encouraging the Dauphin to devote himself to idle hunting in the forests around Sully. After Joan's failure to liberate Paris in 1430, de la Trémoïlle imprisoned her in the castle. In the 18th century, Voltaire, exiled from Paris, also spent time at the château.
The château of Sully-sur-Loire is a superb example of a medieval fortress with its high towers and moats. The moats are still full of water diverted from the Sange River. It was built at the end of the 14th century on a site which has dominated one of the few crossing points of the River Loire. The keep, dating from 1400, has one of the finest chestnut roofs anywhere along the Loire. The carpentry of the garrets is a work of art by master carpenters of the Orléans region.
The most famous of the château's proprietors was the first Duke of Sully (1559-1641), who was the Grand Minister to King Henri IV. The castle remained in the Sully family for four centuries. The young Louis XIV and his mother Anne of Austria took refuge here in 1652 as they fled the insurrection. Voltaire was exiled here in 1719 for his immoderate taste for satire. Today, exhibitions and theme entertainment are held here each year, as well as a music festival.

River Cruise Advisor: A Journey Along The Loire River
The Loire is one of France's most beautiful rivers, but because of notoriously shallow depths, the river has been largely unnavigable for river cruisers - until recently. Strasbourg-based CroisiEurope developed a paddlewheeler that can propel itself along the Loire, and now for the first time ever, this beautiful river is possible to experience on a river cruise.

This video is about exploring one of my favorite regions in France, the Loire Valley. The 'Valley of the Kings' is home to quaint villages, great wine and of course beautiful chateaux many of which have back stories full of drama and intrigue.

Controversy Alert: Though one of my sources for this cast does identify the three crus of Muscadet Sèvre et Maine as AOCs, I can't find backup for this claim, with the other sources I've seen saying that the three crus have something called communal cru status, which does not make them separate AOCs but does give them stricter production and other requirements than the parent AOC of Muscadet Sèvre et Maine. I'll keep you posted while I try to sort this out.
UPDATE: The three Crus are DGCs (Dénominations Géographiques Complémentaires), not separate AOCs. I cover DGCs in the main cast on the Côte de Nuits, so you can find more information there.

A Walk Around the Village of Chenonceaux, Loire Valley, France
The small village of Chenonceaux within the Loire Valley in France, has no choice other than to play second fiddle to its ever popular chateau -- Chateau de Chenonceau, without the 'x', but it takes its role seriously offering the 'chateau hoppers' ample opportunities to dine and stay in comfort with options to suit most travellers.
It doesn't take long to stroll through the streets of the village but you are rewarded by some unusual sites like this rhino. in the driveway of the antiques dealer on Rue Bretonneau.
This Loire Valley village also has a very small chapel, L'église Saint-Jean-Baptiste which is worth popping your head into as after all the grandeur of some of the abbeys, churches and cathedrals you will find its simplicity charming.
Some enterprising residents also offer pottery products from a small shop just as you enter the village and there is a boulangerie, a gift shop and a small tourist office.
There is a railway station, well actually a platform stop, which separates the chateau car parking and the village making chateau Chenonceau easy to reach even without a car.

A Walk Around Château de Chenonceau, Loire Valley, France
The Château de Chenonceau is a French château spanning the River Cher, near the small village of Chenonceaux in the Indre-et-Loire département of the Loire Valley in France. It is one of the best-known châteaux of the Loire valley, and it and Montsoreau are the only chateaux built over the Loire river bed.
The estate of Chenonceau is first mentioned in writing in the 11th century. The current château was built in 1514–1522 on the foundations of an old mill and was later extended to span the river. The bridge over the river was built (1556-1559) to designs by the French Renaissance architect Philibert de l'Orme, and the gallery on the bridge, built from 1570–1576 to designs by Jean Bullant.
José-Emilio Terry, a Cuban millionaire, acquired Chenonceau from Madame Pelouze in 1891. Terry sold it in 1896 to a family member, Francisco Terry. In 1913, the château was acquired by Henri Menier, a member of the Menier family, famous for their chocolates, who still own it to this day.
During World War I Gaston Menier set up the gallery to be used as a hospital ward. During the Second World War the château was bombed by the Germans in June 1940. It was also a means of escaping from the Nazi occupied zone on one side of the River Cher to the free zone on the opposite bank. Occupied by the Germans, the château was bombed by the Allies on 7 June 1944, when the chapel was hit and its windows destroyed.
In 1951, the Menier family entrusted the château's restoration to Bernard Voisin, who brought the dilapidated structure and the gardens (ravaged in the Cher River flood in 1940) back to a reflection of its former glory.
Cycling in the Loire Valley | Travel Vlog
One of the highlights of our entire trip has got to be cycling in the Loire Valley, it was just stunning scenery the whole way in perfect weather conditions. We started by renting bikes in Chinon and cycling to Cravant les Coteaux. The next day we took a train to Blois and rode along the Loire River to Chateaux de Chambord. Despite being sore the next few days it was amazing to see the countryside and to cycle in France!
