One day trip from Dubrovnik to Lokrum
Croatia (Hrvatska) is a country on the Balkan peninsula.
Dubrovnik is a Croatian city on the Adriatic Sea, in the region of Dalmatia. It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean Sea, a seaport and the center of Dubrovnik-Neretva County. In 1979, the city of Dubrovnik joined the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.Contemporary Dubrovnik is divided into two singular areas: the dense urban center within the city walls and Lokrum Island, a monument to nature and landscape architecture. Although different in character, these two spaces blend harmonically.
The prosperity of the city was historically based on maritime trade; as the capital of the maritime Republic of Ragusa, it achieved a high level of development, particularly during the 15th and 16th centuries, as it became notable for its wealth and skilled diplomacy.
Dubrovnik in Croatia is known as filming location of Game Of Thrones.
Game of thrones was filmed on this locations: city walls, St. Dominika street, fort Bokar, Stradun, fort St. Lawrence, Gradac park, hotel Belvedere, Minčeta tower, Trsteno arboretum...
The capital of Croatia is Zagreb. Other popular Croatian tourist destinations are Split, island Hvar, island Brac, island Krk, Pula, island Pag, Opatija, Porec, Zadar, Plitvice lakes, Krka national park, Kornati national park.
I created this video with the YouTube Video Editor (
The Iron Throne, Lokrum Island, Dubrovnik, Croatia.
Whilst visiting Dubrovnik is something I would highly recommend in its own right, Game of Throne fans will simply love hunting Dubrovnik and the Old City for the locations used in the series.
Just off the coast from the Old City of Dubrovnik (used extensively in GoT, as Kings Landing in particular) is the nature reserve of Lokrum Island. Within the Benedictine Monestry on the island is an ornate garden used in season 2 and beside this is a small room containing the Iron Throne prop used in Season 1.
I visited the island in April 2018 and shared the whole exhibit with about 6 people. If located on the main land it would probably have been packed with hundreds of people. In other words, now is the time to go and see it before it is moved to the mainland and, based on its condition, locked away behind a screen or in a showcase.
Unfortunately, both arms of the chair are beginning to show significant wear from people like me sitting on it for photos and resting their hands on the two handgrips on the ends. I would expect the authorities to ban people from sitting on it any day soon as this will be a draw for years to come.
As for Lokrum itself, the view back from the top of Fort Royal to the old city is amazing (the walk up to it is hard work). I arrived on the first ferry and found the area close to the monestery full of the largest, hairiest rabbits I have ever seen...and loads of peacocks.
The far side of the island is surprisingly rocky and actually worth visiting. I believe many bits of the island were used in several episodes of GoT so you could easily spend a day here hunting them out. I spend about 3/4 hours here (1/2 day and I think that's enough. I had time to head back to the old city and tour the Old City walls.

Our visit Dubrovnik travel guide covers some of the top attractions including a food guide to local Croatian food, top sightseeing tourist attractions and the city by day and by night including visiting the old city walls, palaces, cathedrals, island hopping and more. We cover activities you won't find in a typical Dubrovnik tourism brochure, Dubrovnik itinerary or Dubrovnik, Croatia city tour also known as Grad Dubrovnik Hrvatska.
20 Things to do in Dubrovnik, Italy Travel Guide Video Transcript: (Grad Dubrovnik Hrvatska):
Is there a more visually stunning city than Dubrovnik? Nicknamed the Pearl of the Adriatic, this destination is sure to capture your gaze. Between it’s white limestone buildings, bright terracotta rooftops and cobalt blue waters that sparkle under the sunlight you'll be dazzled during your visit. This was the final stop of our travels in Croatia, and what a way to finish of our trip.
We walked up, down, and around the Old Town clocking thousands of steps each day, and in this video we’re going to take you on a tour of of the city and show you 15 things to do in Dubrovnik.
We entered the Old Town through Ploće Gate, which is in the east end of the city strolling along the Old Port. We explored the Old Town on foot visiting Dubrovnik Cathedral, which at one point was even funded by England’s King Richard the Lionheart, after he was saved from a shipwreck on the nearby island of Lokrum.
We wandered over to Gundulić Square where a few vendors had set up for the day to sniff out a few treats. We stopped at Big Onofrio Fountain, which was built in 1438 as part of a water system that supplied water from a spring 12km away.
Then, another attraction unexpectedly caught our attention: The Old Pharmacy at the Franciscan Monastery.
Founded in the year 1317, this in-house pharmacy was set up by Franciscan friars and would go on to service the town as well as people living beyond the walls. There’s still a pharmacy within the monastery today.
We tried to visit the Rector’s Palace, which was built in the late 15th century for the elected rector who governed Dubrovnik, but it was under renovation.
A sightseeing boat tour called the “Panorama Excursion” departed from the Old Port and went out around Lokrum Island.
We decided to eat at Mea Culpa, and ordered one Dalmatian Pizza and one Seafood Pizza.
It was time for the main attraction: walking around Dubrovnik’s Old City walls. Admission is 150 kuna for a 2 kilometres walk that takes about 1 hour to complete.
The first set of walls were built in the 9th century, and then in the 14th century these were strengthened with forts along the circumference. This attraction is worth the price tag. From here you can admire the all of the old town, gaze at the shimmering waters of the Adriatic, and look out to the neighbouring Lokrum.
After that quick ice cream break, we walked over to Fort Lovrijenac, also known as St. Lawrence Fortress.
Perched on a cliff 37 meters above the sea, this fortress dominates sea and land entrances from the western side of the city.
We made a stop at Buza Bar, which is great place for drinks anytime of day, but especially so around sunset. Gradac Park, was also used as one of the Game of Thrones filming locations, so you may recognize it from the Purple Wedding.
That’s a wrap for Dubrovnik and the rest of our time in Croatia! We hope this video gave you ideas of some of the things you can do in Dubrovnik on your own visit.
This is part of our Travel in Croatia video series showcasing Croatian food, Croatian culture and Croatian cuisine.

According to CNNGo, Dubrovnik is among the 10 best preserved medieval walled cities in the world. Although it was demilitarised in the 1970s to protect it from war, in 1991, after the breakup of Yugoslavia, it was besieged by the Serb and Montenegrin soldiers gathered in the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) for seven months and suffered significant damage from shelling.

Dubrovnik in 4K
Dubrovnik is always worth a trip. That´s what the crew of Cities in 4K thought, too. So we decided to visit this beautiful city this spring after the Star Wars filming was finished.
Dubrovnik is located at the Adriatic Sea in Croatia and it´s on UNESCO´s list of World Heritage Site. It has a beautiful old part of the city which is bigger than the usual ones. It is a very popular touristic destination for tourists from all over the world, because it combines history and sea vacation in one.
Watch the Video from Cities in 4K and explore this amazing city with a lot of footage of scenes which were part of the popular series Game of Thrones. Other scenes you can find in the 4K resolution video of Dubrovnik (Croatia) are: amazing panoramic view of the city from mountain Srdj (which can be reached by cable car, car or walk), old harbour in the old part of city, Stradun (the main promenade in the heart of old town), panoramic view over the roofs of old town (from the city walls), castles like Minceta and Lovrijenac, Church of Saint Blaise and others. These are just parts of many architectural and historical buildings you can enjoy and explore in this worldwide popular city.
When in Dubrovnik don´t forget to take a ride with the Yellow Semi Submarine. You will experience a great sea ride around the old city of Dubrovnik and island Lokrum and an amazing dive under the water surface. This is a must do to complete your experience.

Top best places to visit in Dubrovnik, Croatia
Dubrovnik is a walled city on the Adriatic Sea Coast of the south of Croatia.
Due to its exceptional beauty and rich history, this ancient town is considered to be the “Pearl of the Adriatic”. It is one of the most prominent tourist resorts of the Mediterranean and a World Heritage Site.
The City Walls are the biggest attraction. They run around the Old Town and they have a great view of Dubrovnik and the see.
There are four city gates, two of the major entrances are:
On the eastern side the Gate of Ploce, which is protected by the freestanding Revelin Fortress.
And on the western side, defended by Fort Bokar, the Gate of Pile.
From the Pile’s Gate and the Onofrio´s Fountain starts the central street of the old town, the Stradun. This representative place of the city leads to Luza Square.
One of the most impressive squares in town features:
Church of Saint Blaise, the City Hall, the Roland's Column, the Bell Tower and the Sponza Palace.
Next to Luza Square and the City Hall are situated: a museum dedicated to the city’s history, the Rector’s Palace and the impressive Dubrovnik Cathedral.
At the eastern part of Dubrovnik is located the Old Port. Despite the name it is still used by private citizens, as well as sightseeing tours and regular boat lines.
Inside the city walls there are a synagogue, a mosque, and a lot of churches, such as:
St Ignatius Church.
Or St Sebastian Church, and standing just behind it the Dominican Monastery and Museum.
One of the most important and well preserved historical sites of town is the Lazareti, an independent cultural center that brings together artists, philosophers and writers.
Dubrovnik has not only churches and museums but also beaches. From Banje Beach there is an amazing view to old town and the island of Lokrum.
Outside the walls was built an essential fortification to the defense of the city, St Lawrence Fortress.
The main purpose of its construction was to protect the freedom of people from ground and sea attacks, today it is a tourist attraction and theater.
To see the city from high up the best place to go is Minceta Tower, one of the most beautiful cultural attractions in Dubrovnik.

Part 3 of our Croatian holiday.
We set off to Cavtat around 25 minutes from Dubrovnik and explore this beautiful little town. The weather wasn't so sunny, so we made the most of the cooler temperatures and ventured back to Dubrovnik to walk the city walls which was absolutely stunning, if a little tiring with the amount of steps!

Europe 2017 Vlog: Discovering Dubrovnik, Croatia
My first major destination on my trip is the beautiful Dubrovnik located in the southern parts of the Dalmatian coast in Croatia. I arrived after a flight from Frankfurt, and I spent the day conquering jet lag by exploring the old town, walking the Stradun, exploring the town walls, and checking out the apartment I stayed at for three nights through Airbnb. Although the city is very popular with tourists and can feel very crowded, I highly recommend checking out the city.
If you would like to watch a specific part of the video, you may use the times below as a guide:
01:00 - Tour of the apartment through Airbnb
05:00 - Exploring the Stradun (main pedestrian street in the old town)
