This is Part 1 from my 3 part web series across Manipur. In this part, I will be exploring the famous Loktak lake and a few places in and around Imphal. Hope you all enjoy it :) Stay tuned for next part :)
Manipur is a state in Northeast India, with the city of Imphal as its capital. It is bounded by Nagaland to the north, Mizoram to the south, and Assam to the west; Burma (Myanmar) lies to its east. The state covers an area of 22,327 square kilometres (8,621 sq mi) and has a population of almost 3 million, including the Meitei, who are the majority group in the state, Loi, Yaithibi, Kuki and Naga peoples, who speak a variety of Sino-Tibetan languages. Manipur has been at the crossroads of Asian economic and cultural exchange for more than 2,500 years. It has long connected the Indian subcontinent to Southeast Asia and China, enabling migration of people, cultures, and religions.

Loktak Lake Manipur India
A visit to Loktak Lake and its villages. Moirang to Thanga. Manipur state, India.
It is the largest freshwater lake in North-East India, famous for its phumdis - floating islands made of masses of vegetation, soil and organic matter in various decay stages. People living by the lake make a living mainly from fishing.

Amazing Loktak Lake | India's Largest Floating Park | INA Complex | Manipur Vlog 02
Manipur, The Land of Jewels. Where Nagaland lies in North, Mizoram in South, Assam to the west and Mayanmar neighboring country in the east.
My journey to Manipur was full of magical events, which here I start with this vlog, where lakes form ring-like grass structure, formation made for fishing and is also the only livelihood for the villagers in Moirang, Loktak lake is the only lake where you will find such an amazing ring, but that's not the end to our surprises friends, the only floating national park of the world where Golden Shanghai DEERS habitat, yes absolutely right magical...that's not the end to manipur...there is lot more to come and will amaze your souls too. When you will see the best example of women empowerment and that shows, how much they respect women in Manipur. Well that also means Women dominates in Manipur ????????????????
Since humans have wisdom, so those lakes somewhere have reduced the habitat of magical deers. And thus preservation work is in speed. Hope balance of Human habitat and Animals go hand in hand.

Loktak Lake, Manipur - Living Like Locals in Floating Huts!!
Loktak Lake is one of the most famous tourist spots of Manipur - We thought of experiencing the lake while living in the middle of the lake in one of the fishermen cottages, doing a homestay.
Loktak lake is known for its floating islands which are made of floating biomasses. It is also one of the biggest fresh water lakes in northeast India. It is beautiful and about 2 hours by road from Imphal, the capital of Manipur, near the town of Moirang.
We lived with Sangai Moonlight camping and had the most unique experience of my life. If you like watching, please do like, share, comment and support by subscribing.

Loktak Lake Manipur
Loktak Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India and is famous for the phumdis (heterogeneous mass of vegetation, soil and organic matter at various stages of decomposition) floating over it. The lake is located near Moirang in Manipur state, India. The etymology of Loktak is Lok = stream and tak = the end.The largest of all the phumdis covers an area of 40 km2 (15 sq mi) and is situated on the southeastern shore of the lake. Located on this phumdi, Keibul Lamjao National Park is the only floating national park in the world. The park is the last natural refuge of the endangered Sangai (state animal), Rucervus eldii eldii or Manipur brown-antlered deer (Cervus eldi eldi), one of three subspecies of Eld's deer.
This ancient lake plays an important role in the economy of Manipur. It serves as a source of water for hydropower generation, irrigation and drinking water supply. The lake is also a source of livelihood for the rural fishermen who live in the surrounding areas and on phumdis, also known as “phumshongs”. Human activity has led to severe pressure on the lake ecosystem. 55 rural and urban hamlets around the lake have a population of about 100,000 people. Considering the ecological status and its biodiversity values, the lake was initially designated as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention on 23 March 1990.It was also listed under the Montreux Record on 16 June 1993, a record of Ramsar sites where changes in ecological character have occurred, are occurring or are likely to occur.

Loktak Lake, south of Imphal in Manipur, India
Loktak Lake is a life sustaining resources of the indigenous people who live in the small island s of Loktak Lake.
Loktak Lake, the largest freshwater (sweet) lake in India, also called the only Floating lake in the world due to the floating phumdis (heterogeneous mass of vegetation, soil, and organic matters at various stages of decomposition) on it, is located near Moirang in Manipur state, India. The etymology of Loktak is Lok = stream and tak = the end.
The Keibul Lamjao National Park, which is the last natural refuge of the endangered sangai or Manipur brow-antlered deer, one of three subspecies of Eld's Deer, covering an area of 40 km2 (15 sq mi), is situated in the southeastern shores of this lake and is the largest of all the phumdis in the lake.
This ancient lake plays an important role in the economy of Manipur. It serves as a source of water for hydropower generation, irrigation and drinking water supply. Loktak Lake is fed by the Manipur river and several tributaries and 'Ungamel Channel' (Barrage) is its only outlet now. The origin of the Manipur river system and its tributaries, which flows in a north-south direction and drains into the lake is from the hill ranges immediately to the west of the lake. The five major rivers with indirect catchment area of 7,157 km2 (2,763 sq mi) are the Imphal (also called the Manipur River), the Iril, the Thoubal, the Sekmai and the Khuga. The other major streams which drain into the lake and which bring in lot of silt are the Nambul, the Nambol, the Thongjarok, the Awang Khujairok, the Awang Kharok, the Ningthoukhong, the Potsangbam, the Oinam, the Keinou and the Irulok. The Lake, located on the southern side of the Manipur river basin, is at the lowest elevation in the valley and no other major river flows into the lake, except a few rivulets.Well connected by road and air, Imphal, the capita city of Manipur is 39 km (24 mi) away from the lake, by road. The lake is a unique destination for tourism. The lake offers excellent opportunities for visitors to enjoy the beauty of the lake and its several islands located inside the it that are studded with floating phumdis of different geometrical shapes. The important islands which offer facilities for visitors are the Sandra and Phubala.
