The amazing Lake of Lonar Crater
Our Guide Ramesh Rathor explains us about Lonar Crater Lake, a saline soda lake located at Lonar in Buldana district, Maharashtra, India.
The lake was initially believed to be of volcanic origin, but now it is recognized as an impact crater created by the hypervelocity impact of either a comet or a meteorite (about 2 million-ton).
This lake, which lies in a basalt impact structure, is both saline and alkaline (pH ~10.7).
Lake has a mean diameter of 1.2 kilometres (3,900 ft) and is about 137 metres (449 ft) below the crater rim. The meteor crater rim is about 1.8 kilometres (5,900 ft) in diameter.
The crater's age is usually estimated to be 52,000 ± 6,000 years (Pleistocene), although a recent study published in 2010 gives an age of 656,000 ± 81,000 years.

Lonar Crater
During my trip to Maharastra, in India, I had the highlight of visiting the Lonar Crater. Taking me an hour to climb down and back up, I spent a total of three hours in or on the crater.
My young guide, Taj, was patient and strong when needed for the climb down. His knowledge of the crater and its inhabitants was very good.
He told me about the twin eco system that thrives there both saline and alkaline in nature. I must admit the ground near the lake edge felt very spongy underfoot and smelled of rotten eggs, Yuk!
More info here:
Incredibly old at 50,000 years, the Lonar crater is the youngest and best preserved impact crater formed in basalt rock and is the only of its kind on earth. The crater was formed fifty-two thousand years ago, when a blazing ball of fire (a meteor that weighed over one million ton in dead weight) crashed into the earth at an estimated speed of 90,000 km per hour. It gouged a deep depression (1.8 km wide and 150 m deep) before erupting and spewing molten rock to create a magnificent crest on the rim. Over time, the jungle took over, and a perennial stream transformed the crater into a tranquil, emerald green lake.
Located in the Buldhana District of Maharashtra, the Lonar Lake is an exceptional ‘bowl of biodiversity’ and a wildlife sanctuary with a unique ecology that is vastly different from the surrounding flat landscape. A land-locked water body which is alkaline and saline at the same time, the Lonar Lake supports micro-organisms rarely found elsewhere on earth. Fringed by a lush jungle, the lake’s surroundings are peppered with fragments of minerals like maskelynite, and centuries-old abandoned temples that are now inhabited only by insects and bats.

Temples Around The Lonar Crater Lake
Lonar is town in the Buldhana District of Maharashtra. Lonar’s main attraction is the lake and the ancient temples that surround it. Some of them were of Yadava times and Hemadpant style of Architecture. Most tourists come to nearby Aurangabad to visit the Ajanta and Ellora UNESCO World Heritage Sites, but never make it as far as Lonar. Lonar crater lake is an excellent place for archeological as well as astronomical adventure. The sheer joy of trekking through the lush jungle and stumbling upon centuries-old, abandoned temples around the Lonar lake that are now inhabited only by insects, monkeys and bats. This trek involves covering the 6 km perimeter of the lake and There are multiple starting points to the lake. The path vanishes at a few sections owing to dense forest area. Apart from Dhara Temple Complex, Kumareshwar Temple, Ramgaya Temple & Kamalaja Devi Temple, other temples (Yadnyawalkeshwar Temple/Shukracharya Vedhashala, Kapila Sangam Temple, Vishnu/Bageecha Temple, Shankar Ganesh Temple, Wagh Mahadeo Temple, Mor Mahadeo Temple, Amberkhana/Sun Temple, Mungala Mahadeo Temple & Chopda Mahadeo Temple) are dilapidated or partially submerged, but some contain beautifully carved door frames and pillars while in some the ceiling is decorated with cusped ornament. The most significant Daitya Sudan temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, sits in the town. Professor Sudhakar Bugdane (Author of The Book - Lonar Darshan) has given me all information about Temples around the Lonar lake and Daitya Sudan temple.
LONAR CRATER
Namasthe, This is Ahoratra Natesha Polepalli from 'Gaganagocharee Vasundhara'
We all might be aware of the fact that our beloved Bapuji had chosen 'Wardha' village to start his Sevagrama, the reason behind this intention was that he thought that 'Wardha' was at the real centre of India as its North-South line and East-West line cross each other.
To test if this was actually a true fact, with the help of Google Earth joining from 'Laddu Mahadeva' Peak of 'Kasmir' to 'Vivekanandha' rock of 'Kanyakumari' as a North-South line, then from the shrine of Puri Jagannatha' to 'Nasika Triyabhakeswara' temple shrine as an East-West line, one line from North-Eastern 'Kailasa-Manasa' to south-western 'Gokarna' and one more line from South-Eastern 'Rameswaram' temple shrine to North-Western the only ancient Brahma’s temple at 'Pushkar'.
All these lines formed are at a centre with a point which is exactly placed 200 kms from 'Wardha Sevashram'.
The great co-incidence is that this point obtained is visualized as a navel of Bharatha Matha is an unusual Lake that looks exactly circular with a circumference of 6 kms and diameter of 2 kms.
This is one among the top ten craters of the globe which attracted world scientists of physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Geology etc.. from centuries with an attractive name as LONAR LAKE and also called as SALINE SODA LONAR CRATER in Buldhana district Maharastra.
Scientists found out that this was created due to meteor impact before 560000 years back.
But according Ahoratras theory of perception this was the first among the huge craters of the world created due to the meteor hits to maintain the balancing, alignment and speed control of the globe by the 'Gandharwas' called the aliens of different parts of the galaxy at the time of the formation of the earth about 4320000 years back.
This Earth is like a spherical shaped crater containing lots of inorganic salts causing surrounding forest filled with unusual colourful creatures, aives, reptiles, pices, amphibians, Flora and founa. Etc.
The PH value of this crater is 11.
Our ancestors from centuries who visited the crater had observed that they all were cured from their health ailments and became fit and fine, hence the rulers of those times constructed more tha 400 temples around the crater, more of them have been ruined today.
According to the epics 'Padma Purana' and 'Skanda Purana' Lord Vishnu in the form of 'DaityaSudhana' destroyed the demon called 'Lavanasura' who was living with his sisters and was doing lots of destructive activities.
There is a star shaped 'Daityasudhana' temple which was built in 6th century which was situated with fantastic carvings to represent this story.
Those who want to enjoy their vacation can visit this place and come back with glow and grace.

Lonar lake...An ancient mythological crater lake of India
The Lonar crater is the world's only salt water lake in basaltic rock, believed to have been caused by a meteorite hitting Earth around 52,000 years ago. It is surrounded by forests with a large variety of birds, particularly peacocks, owls, red-wattled lapwings and ducks.
Lonar has its own ecological system. As the sun sets, the entire lake appears differently. The lake water sweeps across the shore like sea water, and the birds, wolves, peacocks and other creatures start making their presence felt. It is a wonderful scene to watch the sun rising or setting below the lake walls. The lake has a remarkable presence of splinters of glass confirming the meteorite's impact, which caused the enormous temperature rise thereby turning the sand into glass.
Numerous temples surround the lake, around the rim of the crater and further down around the lake, most of which stand in ruins today, except for the temple of Daitya Sudan at the centre of the Lonar town, which was built in honour of Vishnu's victory over the giant Lonasur. It is a fine example of early Hindu architecture. Vishnumandir, Wagh Mahadev, Mora Mahadev, Munglyacha Mandir and Goddess Kamalaja Devia are the other temples found inside the crater.
The nearest train stations are Shegaon near Khamgaon and Malkapur near Bhusawal railway-junction, on the Mumbai-Bhusawal-Nagpur route of Central Railway of Indian Railways and is around 100 km from Lonar. Buses also run to Lonar from Nagpur, Akola, Buldhana, Malkapur and Jalna.
If travelling from Nagpur, one must take a bus till Mehkar near Washim and then head to Lonar. From Mumbai or Pune, the most convenient route is to first reach Aurangabad via bus (Mumbai and Pune) or train/flight (from Mumbai only) and then take a state transport bus to Lonar. From Pune, air-conditioned and regular buses run every hour from the Shivajinagar bus stand to Aurangabad.
Maharashtra Tourism runs a resort just 50 meters from the lake. This property is modern, well maintained and cheap. There also are several low cost and simple accommodations called lodges available in the town.
The food available in Lonar has influence from both Khandesh and Marathwada cuisines. It is unique and simple but spicy.

10 Most Incredible Impact Craters in the world.
10 Most Incredible Impact Craters.
An impact crater, also known as meteorite crater is a crater created by a collision of a meteorite with the Earth surface. The following is a list of 10 impressive impact craters that can be seen and recognized by the naked eye. Therefore, the list contains small craters, rather than huge crates which are tens or hundreds of kilometers in diameter
1. Meteor Crater (Barringer crater), Arizona, United States – The Barringer crater is one of the best preserved impact craters in the world. The impact occurred about 50,000 years ago by an iron meteorite – very recent with regards to meteorite impacts. It has a diameter of 1,200 meters (3,900 ft) and a depth of 170 m deep (570 ft). The crater is named after Daniel Barringer who was first to suggest that it was produced by meteorite impact. The Meteor crater is a U.S.
2. Pingualuit Crater, Quebec, Canada – The Pingualuit crater, also known as Chubb Crater or New Quebec Crater is located in the Ungava Peninsula. It is 3.44 km (2.14 mi) in diameter, and has a depth of 400 m (1,300 ft).
3. Amguid Crater, Algeria – The Amguid crater is an impact crater with a diameter of about 500 – 530 meters (1,640 – 1,740 ft) and a depth of only 65 meters (213 ft). The crater was first descovered in 1948 and it is estimated that the impact occurred less than 100,000 years ago
4. Lonar Crater, Maharashtra, India – The Lonar Crater age is somewhat controversial: the age is usually estimated to be around 52,000 years, but recent studies indicate that the impact might have occurred as much as 570,000 years ago (give or take 47,000).
5. Wolfe Creek Crater, Western Australia, Australia – Located within Wolfe Creek Meteorite Crater National Park, this well preserved meteorite crater was first found in 1947. It is about 875 meters (2,870 ft) in diameter and has a depth of about is 60 meters (196 ft). The age estimation is less than 300,000 years
6. Tenoumer crater, Mauritania – Located in the western Sahara Desert, this impact crater is 1.9 km in diameter, with edges that rise up to 110 meters above the crater’s base. It is one of the youngest of the craters in this list with an estimated age of somewhere between 10,000 – 30,000 years
7. Tswaing Crater, South Africa – This crater is also filled with a lake. The crater has a diameter of 1.13 km and a depth of 100 meters. The impact occurred some 220,000 years ago
8. Kaali Craters, Saaremaa island, Estonia – Kaali is a group of 9 impact craters formed 4,000 -7,600 years ago, as a meteorite broke into pieces at an altitude 5 – 10 km and fell to the surface in fragments. The falling fragments created 9 rather small craters all within a radius of 1 km (0.6 mile). The largest crater has a diameter of 110 meters (360 ft) and a depth of 22 meters (72 ft), while the rest are only 12-40 meters in diameter and just 1-4 meters in depth
9. Aouelloul Crater, Mauritania – Another exposed impact crater in Mauritania, 390 meters wide with an age estimation of over 3 million years
10. Roter Kamm Crater, Namibia – Located in the Namib Desert, the crater is 2.5 km (1.5 miles) in diameter and is 130 meters (430 ft) deep, although most of it (at least 100 meters / 330 ft) is filled with sand. The age estimation is 4-5 million years
