Bhushi Dam + Lion's Point : Famous Rainy Season Picnic Points at Lonavala near Mumbai - Pune
Weekend Special Picnic Spots near Mumbai and Pune : Bhushi Dam and Lion's Point at Lonavala
The Bhushi Dam is a masonry dam on the Indrayani River in Lonavala, Maharashtra, India.
The dam was built in the late 1860s for the Great Indian Peninsular Railway as a source of water for their steam engines. As of 2014 it is owned by the Central Railway zone of the Indian Railways, the successor to the Great Indian Peninsular Railway.
Water was carried from the reservoir to Lonavala, Khandala and the reversing station of the railways by cast-iron pipes. The Railway company later agreed to supply some water to the town of Lonavala as well, because the dam had been built using Municipal funding.
In 2011, the Indian Navy proposed to take over the Bhushi dam and Bhugaon lake for its training activities at the Indian Naval Station Shivaji which is located in the vicinity. The Lonavala Police stated that such a move would restrict the access of the public to the dam.
In 2012, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) proposed to construct a 9 kilometres (5.6 miles) long tunnel along the Mumbai Pune Expressway which would pass right below the Bhushi dam.

Lonavala is a town and a hill station Municipal Council in Pune district in the Indian State of Maharashtra. It is about 64 km west of modern-day Pune city and 96 km to the east of Mumbai. It is known for its production of the hard candy chikki and is also a major stop on the railway line connecting Mumbai and Pune. From the Pune suburbs, local trains are available from Pune Junction. Both the Mumbai-Pune Expressway as well as the Mumbai-Bengaluru highway pass through Lonavala. Lonavala is also home to INS Shivaji (formerly HMIS Shivaji) which is the Indian Navy's Premier Technical Training Institute.
Present day Lonavala was a part of the Yadava dynasty. Later, the Mughals realized the strategic importance of the region and kept the region for an extended time. The forts in the region and the Mavala warriors played an important role in the history of the Maratha Empire and that of the Peshwas. In 1871, the Lonavala and Khandala hill stations were discovered by Lord Elphinstone, who was the Governor of Bombay Presidency at the time.
Lonavala and the adjacent Khandala are twin hill stations 622 metres (2,041 ft) meters above sea level, in the Sahyadri ranges that demarcate the Deccan Plateau and the Konkan coast. The hill stations sprawl over an approximate area of 38 square kilometres (15 sq mi). Tourism peaks during the monsoon season. The name Lonavala is derived from the words 'leni' which means caves and 'avali' which means series. i.e. 'a series of Caves' which is a reference to the many caves like Karla Caves, Bhaja Caves and Bedsa that are close to Lonavala. A trip to Lonavala and Khandala can be combined with sight-seeing visits of Karla, Bhaja and Bedsa caves and also the two fortresses, Lohagad and Visapur. Another place of interest is the Tungi fort, one of the forts captured by Malik Ahmad near the village of Karjat and was known for its natural strength. The Andharban trek begins from village Pimpri, passes through dense forests, valleys and waterfalls and ends in Bhira.

The Bhushi Dam is a masonry dam on the Indrayani River in Lonavala, Maharashtra, India. In 2014, the Indian Railways announced plans to develop Bhushi Dam as a tourist resort with participation from the private sector.

In 2012, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) proposed to construct a 9 kilometres (5.6 miles) long tunnel along the Mumbai Pune Expressway which would pass right below the Bhushi dam.
The Bhushi Dam frequently sees cases of drowning. A 2012 report stated that as many as 25 people had died in a five-year period.
In order to bring down these accidents, the Lonavala Police and the railways set up a control room near the dam, as well as imposed a ban on consumption of liquor in areas surrounding the dam.Subsequently, vehicles were banned from entering the area after 3 pm and visitors were prohibited from entering the dam and the surrounding areas after 5 pm.
Tourists are usually allowed to visit the dam from 9 am up to 3 pm. Except local buses, all other buses are banned from entering the area.

Karla caves, Bhaja caves, Lonavala lake, Rajmachi and Lions point Lonavala
This video is about Karla caves, Bhaja caves, Lion's point, Rajmachi Viewpoint, Lonavala lake, and Bhaja waterfalls. In this 6th episode of Maharashtra melodies, we are covering must-visit places around Lonavala. We started from the Lonavala town towards Karla caves. One thing about tourist destinations around Maharashtra is the exorbitant fees they charge for entry and parking and the poor facility offered for the price they charge. Right after joining Karla caves road you are asked entry fees. Small ghat road to reach Karla caves parking is in bad condition and is often flooded by the pilgrims to visit Ekveera temple situated right next to Karla caves. From Parking it around 500 meters ascend or trek to reach Karla caves. walkway to reach Karla caves/ Ekveera temple is flocked by the small shops of sweets, eatables and pooja items. You need to collect an entry ticket at the counter to enter Karla caves which are 25 Rs/person. To visit just Ekveera temple this is not required. Karla cave complex is a group of 16 caves dating back to the 2nd century BC to 7th century AD. Cave No.8, also called the Great Chaitya cave is the only Chaitya(Prayer hall) among 16 caves This is the largest rock-cut Chaitya in India, measuring 45 m (148 ft) long and up to 14 m (46 ft) high. Lonavala gets its name from Lenavali referring to a series (avali) of resting places in stone(len). By the time we returned, the road to Karla caves/ Ekveera temple got jam-packed And as always, G maps showed us some random adventurous route to reach Bhaja caves. Bhaja Caves or Bhaje caves is a group of 22 rock-cut caves dating back to the 2nd century. One of the caves also houses a group of 14 stupas which are relics of resident monks, who died at Bhaja. Lion's point offers a majestic view of a conical peak (Shiv-ling peak), Shivsagar Lake and many small waterfalls

Mumbai to Lonavala
Lonavala, Khandala are popular holiday destination for mumbaikars, it's close proximity to Mumbai and Pune makes them an ideal choice.
The hill stations are well connected with road and rail.
Road :- Mumbai Pune expressway
(Toll RS 138)
Rail :- Lonavala Railway Station
One gets to see the scenic view of the sahyadri mountains on the way. They are also called the Western Ghats.
One can plan a trip to lonavala anytime as it's just 90km from Mumbai and it takes 2hrs to reach. Though rainy season is the best time to visit as waterfall and dams are in full action.
A car road trip from Mumbai to Lonavala would be the best option in summers and rainy season, Lonavala is also a popular option among bike riders for a bike ride on the concrete six lane Mumbai Pune Highway.
Among the attractions / sightseeing / tourist places / best places to visit in lonavala, here are my recommendations -
- bushi dam
- sunils wax museum
- lonavala lake
- tiger point
- sunset point
- wet n joy water park
- adlabs imagica
- della adventure
- coopers chocolate fudge
- maganlals chikki
- sunny da dhaba
I went to Lonavala for a one day trip and it was fun.
